Schistura altipedunculata is a small stone loach described from India, one of the several hundred Schistura species that make up the bulk of the family Nemacheilidae — the true "stone" or "brook" loaches of Asia's fast, clear, oxygen-rich streams. It is a bold little benthic micro-predator, built to hold station on gravel and stone in current, and like most of its huge genus it is genuinely data-sparse: known distribution is confined to India, and beyond the original description and a handful of database records there is little published on its biology. That is an honest and common state of affairs for Schistura, a genus so large and so full of narrow-range stream endemics that the great majority of its species have never been kept or studied in any depth.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura altipedunculata was described by Petru Bănărescu and Teodor Nalbant in 1968, hence the parentheses around their names — a signal that the species has, at some point, been shifted out of the genus in which it was originally placed. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one that has been extensively reshuffled over the past few decades as the old broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; many of their species were redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera on the strength of finer anatomical and molecular work.

Schistura itself is one of the largest fish genera in the world, with several hundred described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia, and new species are still being described regularly from poorly surveyed streams. Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Schistura altipedunculata is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach built for holding position on the bottom of running water rather than for open-water swimming.
