Taxonomy & naming
Schistura bairdi was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000, placed from the outset in Schistura, the largest genus of stone loaches and the one that absorbed most of the old, broadly-defined Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus over the twentieth century. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the true "stone" or "brook" loaches — by species count the largest loach family, spread in a long band across Eurasia from the Mekong basin to Anatolia.
The genus Schistura has been repeatedly reshuffled as the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS), the current authority for valid names, absorbs revisions to Cobitoidea; species once filed under Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus are now routinely placed here on the strength of finer anatomical work. Schistura bairdi has no recorded synonyms in the cache consulted for this profile, and no common name appears to have taken hold — it is referenced in the literature and on FishBase by its scientific name alone.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small fish: FishBase records a maximum standard length of just 1.5 in, making it one of the more diminutive stone loaches even within a genus where most species top out under 4 in. Like other Schistura it has the classic nemacheilid body plan — an elongate, subcylindrical trunk, a flattened belly suited to gripping the substrate in current, and a small, often barbelled mouth adapted for picking at food items on gravel and rock.
As in its relatives, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove beneath the eye — a defensive feature shared across the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, though far smaller and less conspicuous here than in the larger botiids. The skin is effectively naked, carrying only minute, deeply embedded scales, a trait that makes stone loaches quick to absorb dissolved substances from the water — for better or worse. Habitat

This is large-river habitat, not the small headwater streams that many Schistura favour — the species lives among gravel beds and in rapids within the Mekong's main channel, a setting of powerful, well-oxygenated, sediment-laden flow.
IUCN's assessment estimates its extent of occurrence at only around 200 square kilometres, treated as a single location tied to that stretch of the Mekong.
