Taxonomy & naming
Schistura balteata was described by the Swedish ichthyologist Hjalmar Rendahl in 1948, originally placed in the genus Nemacheilus as Nemacheilus balteatus — a broad grouping that once held the majority of Old World stone loaches. Over subsequent decades systematic revisions redistributed most of those species; the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) now lists this fish as Schistura balteata (Rendahl, 1948), with the parentheses around the author's name indicating the original genus has changed.
Schistura is the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one of the largest fish genera on Earth, containing several hundred species distributed from the Middle East and South Asia across Southeast and East Asia. Most species are small-bodied, fast-water specialists of hill and mountain streams, often known from restricted ranges or single localities. Schistura balteata sits comfortably in this mould: its type locality is Melwedaung (Mahlwe Taung mountain, northern Tenasserim Division, Myanmar), a remote highland drainage, and records from western Thailand extend the known range only modestly. The old combination Nemacheilus balteatus occasionally appears in older literature and some trade materials; the current valid name is Schistura balteata.
Morphology
Schistura balteata reaches a maximum recorded standard length of around 2 in, making it a small even by Schistura standards. The body form is typical of the genus: elongate and slightly laterally compressed, with a somewhat blunt head, a ventrally flattened chest adapted for life on the bottom of fast water, and a forked tail. The mouth is subterminal — positioned slightly below the snout tip — and carries characteristic loach lips.
The colour pattern is the key to identification. Beneath the dorsal fin there are two to three thin vertical dark bars; in front of the dorsal fin, three to five pairs of round or oval dark spots run along the dorsal midline. The absence of a black basal caudal mark distinguishes S. balteata from several superficially similar Schistura species in the region. Like other nemacheilids, the skin is fine-scaled and effectively naked to the touch, and a small erectile suborbital spine is present below each eye — a family-wide defensive structure that can snag nets and nip unwary hands. Overall colouration is a pale to medium body ground with the dark marking pattern described above.
Habitat
Schistura balteata inhabits small hill streams and mountain rivulets in the Tenasserim hill range of southern Myanmar and, across the border, in the Ratchaburi and Kanchanaburi provinces of western Thailand. These are cool, fast-flowing, clear-water streams with high dissolved oxygen, typically running over rock, gravel and sand substrates with minimal silt accumulation. The water temperature in these upland drainages runs from roughly 73–79 °F — cooler than the lowland rivers of the same region — and the current is strong enough to keep the substrate clean and the oxygen levels high.
Like many montane Schistura species, S. balteata is a benthic fish that hugs the substrate, using crevices under rocks and the interstices of gravel for shelter and as bases from which to intercept passing invertebrates. It is not a blackwater or still-water fish; the biotope it occupies is the clear, current-swept, oxygen-rich mountain rivulet, essentially the opposite of a sluggish lowland tropical stream.
Feeding
Schistura balteata is a micro-predator in the wild, foraging over the stream substrate for small invertebrates: insect larvae, small crustaceans, zooplankton and other aquatic bottom-dwelling organisms swept along by the current or sheltering among the stones. This is the standard feeding guild for Schistura — active benthic hunters that pick live prey off hard substrates rather than processing detritus.
In the aquarium the species has been described as relatively unfussy compared with some Schistura, but its preference for live and frozen foods is clear. Bloodworm, Tubifex and Artemia (brine shrimp, live or frozen) are reliable staples. Small sinking pellets and granules may be accepted, but dry flake is likely to be ignored or taken reluctantly. Feeding variety and quality — favouring meaty, sinking items — keeps the fish in the best condition and brings out its natural foraging behaviour.
Mating
As with most Schistura, very little is documented about sexual dimorphism and mating behaviour in S. balteata under either wild or captive conditions. Females of egg-bearing Schistura species typically develop a visibly fuller, rounder abdomen when ripe with eggs, which may be the most reliable indicator of sex. Males in some Schistura species develop subtle tubercles on the snout or pectoral fins during the breeding season, but whether this applies to S. balteata is not recorded.
The sparse captive-breeding account for this species (and the closely studied form described as Schistura cf. balteata) suggests that in a large, mature river-tank setup, a pair may engage in territorial clearing and courtship at a chosen cave site. Competition for that site is intense — this is a pugnacious genus — and several individuals should not be kept together unless the tank is very large and broken up with abundant rock work so that each fish can hold a territory.
Breeding
Schistura balteata has been bred in captivity in at most one documented case, and that account comes from a large, purpose-built river aquarium of several hundred litres with strong flow, mature biological filtration and a rocky substrate offering natural caves. The breeding mode is egg-scattering with no parental care: in the recorded account, the pair excavated substrate beneath a flat rock and sealed the cave entrance with displaced gravel before spawning inside; the eggs were then left unguarded, and no post-spawning parental behaviour was observed. This is unusual substrate preparation for an egg-scatterer and may reflect a specific behavioural quirk rather than true parental guarding.
For all practical purposes, S. balteata is rarely if ever bred in home aquaria. The genus Schistura as a whole has very few verified home-tank spawnings on record; most of the species in trade are wild-collected from their native streams, and keepers should expect to maintain them rather than breed them. Honest advice is that if breeding is attempted, a spacious tank, strong current, cool temperatures and a varied live-food diet are the likely prerequisites — but success cannot be assumed or easily predicted from the available data.
In the aquarium
Schistura balteata is an active, characterful micro-predator suited to a dedicated hill-stream biotope aquarium rather than a general community setup. At 2 in it is small, but it is aggressively territorial toward its own kind and toward other bottom-dwelling loaches that share its niche. A single specimen can be maintained in a moderate-sized aquarium, but if more than one is kept together the tank must be broken into multiple defended territories using rockwork, making a tank of at least 23.5–31.5 in a more practical minimum for a pair or trio.
Water quality and flow are paramount. This is not a fish for a still, warm lowland setup: it wants cool (73–79 °F), clear, well-oxygenated water with a notably strong current — a powerhead or spray bar directed along the tank is not optional but essential. As with all nemacheilids, S. balteata has fine, nearly scaleless skin that makes it sensitive to copper-based treatments and to full-strength medication doses. It is often one of the first fish in a tank to show ich, and any disease treatment should begin at half dose and be monitored with care. Sand or fine gravel substrate with smooth or smooth-edged rocks gives it the natural benthic environment it needs; bright lighting and a bare, featureless tank will keep it hidden and stressed.
Conservation
Schistura balteata is assessed as Data Deficient (DD) on the IUCN Red List (2011), meaning there is insufficient information to assign a threat category. This status is typical for many Schistura species with restricted montane ranges: the assessors could not rule out significant conservation concern but lacked the population data to make a determination. The species' known range — hill streams in the Tenasserim range of Myanmar and border regions of western Thailand — is geographically limited, and many streams in this zone have received little systematic ichthyological survey effort.
The primary threats to freshwater fish in this part of Indochina are habitat degradation from deforestation, agriculture and small-scale mining in upland catchments, changes in water flow and sedimentation from land-use change, and — for small montane species with restricted ranges — the inherently high vulnerability of endemics to any localised disturbance. Schistura balteata does appear in the ornamental fish trade under the names sumo loach and tri-band sumo loach; wild collection could be an additional pressure if demand is sustained, as captive breeding is not a reliable alternative supply. More survey work across the Tenasserim drainages is needed before a meaningful threat assessment can be made.
