Taxonomy & naming
Schistura bhimachari was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1937, hence the parenthetical authority. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was split out from the older, broader Cobitidae and is now recognised as the largest family of loaches by species count. Many species once placed in Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed among Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera as the group's taxonomy has been reworked; Schistura bhimachari has remained in Schistura, the genus that holds the bulk of these South and Southeast Asian stone loaches.
The species epithet honours Dr Brahmananda Srinivasachar Bhimachar (1906-1979), who lectured in the Department of Zoology at Intermediate College, University of Mysore, in Bangalore, India, during the 1930s. As with many single-stream Schistura, the species has attracted little taxonomic attention since its description, and detailed morphological or molecular work distinguishing it from close relatives is limited.
Morphology
Schistura bhimachari shares the general body plan of the genus: an elongate, cylindrical-to-laterally-compressed body suited to holding position on the bottom in current, a ventrally flattened head, and barbels around a small, sub-terminal mouth used to probe the substrate for food. Like other true loaches it carries a small, erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove beneath the eye, used defensively and to anchor itself when handled or netted.
The skin is effectively naked to the touch, with scales that are tiny and deeply embedded — a trait shared across the family and one with real consequences for how the fish tolerates medication. Detailed measurements of adult size, fin-ray counts and colour pattern specific to this species are not well documented in the sources available; FishBase and related literature record it primarily as a data-sparse, range-restricted endemic rather than giving a full morphological account.
Habitat
Schistura bhimachari is endemic to India, where it lives as a freshwater, demersal (bottom-dwelling) fish.
