Taxonomy & naming
Schistura callidora was described in 2011 by Peter Bohlen and Vendula Ŝlechtová as part of a paper covering new loaches from Myanmar, placing it in Schistura — the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one of the most species-rich genera among all freshwater fishes. Nemacheilidae itself has been heavily reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades; many species once lumped under broad catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera as the family's true diversity became clearer. No synonymy has been found for this species — it has been recognised as Schistura callidora since its description, and the Catalog of Fishes, the governing authority for valid names, lists no other combination.
The epithet callidora derives from Greek roots meaning roughly 'gifted with beauty' (calloni, beauty, plus doro, gift), a fitting name for a fish whose barred flanks and finely proportioned body were evidently the authors' first impression on describing it. Genuine peer-reviewed literature on the species is limited essentially to its original description; it has not accumulated the secondary taxonomic or hobbyist literature that better-known Schistura have.
Morphology
This is a small, slender loach — FishBase records a maximum standard length of only about 1.5 in, making it one of the more diminutive stone loaches even within a genus already built from small fish. The body is elongated and noticeably thin through the anterior half, tapering toward a deeply forked caudal fin, with a distinctively raised dorsal crest along the caudal peduncle. The flanks carry 12 to 17 dark vertical bars, the count and spacing forming part of what distinguishes it from its close relatives.
As in other Schistura and Nemacheilidae generally, the body is effectively naked to close inspection — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded rather than absent, but functionally the fish behaves as a scaleless species for the purposes of disease susceptibility and medication sensitivity. Where the anatomy has been examined in the genus, an erectile suborbital spine is typically present beneath the eye, a defensive structure shared across the true loaches; the original description does not flag anything unusual about this feature in S. callidora, so it can be assumed to follow the normal Schistura pattern.
Habitat
Schistura callidora is known only from the Myit Nge River drainage, part of the greater Irrawaddy (Ayeyarwady) basin in Myanmar — a single-drainage endemic in the pattern typical of this genus, where many species are described from one river system and never confirmed elsewhere. FishBase describes the habitat as small streams roughly 20 metres wide, over a substrate of mixed gravel and stone, in water no deeper than about 19.5 in — classic stone-loach water: shallow, clear, running fast enough to keep the bottom clean and well oxygenated.
Water is recorded as tropical, with a minimum temperature around 75 °F (the upper limit not documented) and a pH of 6.5 or higher (again, no upper bound given in the source). This places it at the warmer end for a stone loach, more Southeast-Asian lowland-to-foothill stream than high-altitude cold water, though as with much of its biology the picture from a single locality record should be read as a starting point rather than the full range.
Feeding
No diet study exists specifically for Schistura callidora — FishBase notes the data as sparse or undocumented — but the genus as a whole is well characterised as benthic micro-predators. Related Schistura species forage over gravel and stone for small insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton, picking prey items off and between the substrate rather than grazing algae or biofilm.
There is no reason to expect S. callidora departs from this pattern, and a keeper working from related species' care information would do well to offer small live and frozen foods — items such as Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm — over sinking pellets or flake, which a fish built for hunting in fast water may largely ignore.
Mating
Nothing specific to Schistura callidora has been documented on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour; the original description is a taxonomic paper focused on distinguishing the species from its relatives, not a natural-history account, and no aquarium keeper appears to have reported breeding it. What can be said comes from the wider genus and family: Nemacheilidae loaches are egg-scatterers, with no evidence anywhere in the family of nest-building, cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour, and spawning in related species is typically tied to fast-flowing water over gravel rather than any elaborate courtship display.
Breeding
Schistura callidora has no recorded breeding history in the aquarium, and none should be assumed. Stone and brook loaches of this genus are, when they have been observed at all, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-moving water, with no parental care of eggs or fry — the same pattern as the rest of Nemacheilidae. For most Schistura species, including this one, the honest statement is simply that they are rarely or never bred in captivity; there is no farm-production pathway for this species as there is for more commercially significant loaches, and no hobbyist reports of home spawning to draw on. A keeper should not expect to breed this fish, only to observe it.
In the aquarium
Schistura callidora has essentially no aquarium track record — it does not appear to be established or even occasionally traded in the hobby, and this profile should be read as a projection from its wild habitat and its relatives' care requirements rather than tested keeper experience. Its natural water — shallow, fast, gravel-and-stone streams around 75 °F or warmer with a neutral-to-alkaline pH — points toward a tank with strong current, high oxygenation, and a mixed gravel/stone substrate rather than the soft, still, planted setups suited to many other small loaches.
As with other scaleless loaches, caution with medication is warranted: copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many standard remedies are best avoided or halved, a rule that applies across Nemacheilidae generally. Given its very small adult size and stream-schooling relatives in the genus, a modest but well-filtered, high-flow tank kept in a small group would be the reasonable starting point for anyone who did encounter this species — but given how little is documented, any keeper taking this fish on should treat the details as provisional and be prepared to adjust based on the animal's actual behaviour.
Conservation
Schistura callidora has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. As a species known only from a single river drainage in Myanmar — the Myit Nge, part of the Irrawaddy basin — it fits the broader pattern of range-restricted Nemacheilidae stream endemics that have simply never been formally assessed, rather than one confirmed to be secure or declining.
There is no evidence of any aquarium trade in this species, so trade pressure is not a documented concern. The more relevant risks, as for many small-range Southeast-Asian stream fishes, would be habitat-scale threats such as water quality changes, damming or land-use change within its home drainage — but with no population or distribution monitoring in place, no specific claim can be made about its current conservation status beyond the fact that it has not yet been evaluated.
