Taxonomy & naming
Schistura carbonaria was described by Jörg Freyhof and Dmitry Serov in 2001, with the holotype (ZFMK 26593) held at the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. It has carried this combination since description; there is no older Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus name to untangle, unlike many of its congeners that were shuffled out of those broader genera as Schistura was progressively split apart. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, retains it in Schistura.
The genus Schistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family and by far the largest of the loach lineages, with several hundred described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia. The species epithet carbonaria derives from the Latin carbonarius, "of coal" or "a coal-worker," describing the fish's dark, blackish body tone relative to its paler congeners.
Morphology
Schistura carbonaria is a small loach, reaching around 3 in standard length — modest even by stone-loach standards. Like other members of the genus it has an elongate, cylindrical body suited to holding position on the bottom of fast-flowing water, a subterminal mouth adapted for close-quarters foraging, and paired barbels around the mouth for feeling out prey in the substrate.
As in other nemacheilids, the skin is effectively naked to the touch — the scales, where present, are minute and deeply embedded rather than forming an obvious armor. This near-scaleless condition, shared across the loach clade, makes the species notably sensitive to medication and disease pressure, a point that carries directly into its care. Dark, sooty body coloration — the trait behind its name — distinguishes it from paler Schistura congeners found in the same region.
Habitat
The species is native to central Vietnam, known from coastal drainages including the Ve, Thu Bon and Quang Tri rivers, with a possible extension into Laos via the Xe Kong River system. It occupies medium-sized rivers over rocky and gravelly substrate with swift current — classic stone-loach habitat, where the fish wedges itself among cobbles and gravel in the fastest, most oxygenated part of the flow.
Water here runs cool to moderate in temperature and soft to slightly acidic. This is a lotic, current-loving species, not a stillwater or blackwater fish, and its physiology and behavior are built around living in continuously moving, highly oxygenated water rather than a slow, warm river backwater.
Feeding
Schistura carbonaria is a bottom-dwelling micro-predator, foraging among gravel and cobbles for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans form the bulk of its natural diet, gleaned from the substrate of fast, clear streams.
In the aquarium it takes sinking pellets, flakes and frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and Daphnia readily, but as a bottom forager it may largely ignore food that stays in the water column, so sinking foods that reach the substrate matter more than surface fare.
Mating
No detail on courtship or spawning behavior has been documented for this species; like many Schistura, it is known chiefly from taxonomic and distributional records rather than close behavioral study. Based on the broader genus, dimorphism between the sexes is not conspicuous, and there is no evidence of a distinct breeding display or pair-bonding behavior recorded for this species — data here is sparse.
Breeding
No captive breeding of Schistura carbonaria has been documented. Stone and brook loaches in this genus are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care, and this species is presumed to follow the same pattern based on its relatives, though it has not been directly observed. It should be considered essentially unbred in the aquarium hobby; anyone keeping it should not expect or plan for reproduction.
In the aquarium
This is a specialist's fish, not a beginner's. It needs cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water with strong flow that mimics the swift rocky rivers it comes from — a powerhead or filter outflow creating real current is closer to the mark than a placid community setup. Loaches.com records a working range of roughly 61–77 °F, pH 6–7.5, soft and slightly acidic water; still, warm tanks are the wrong environment for this species.
Being territorial, it needs numerous hiding places — bogwood, plants, rocky caves and cobbles — with visual barriers between them to reduce conflict between individuals. Like all nemacheilids its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, so any treatment should start conservatively; scaleless loaches are also often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich. Given the genuine scarcity of hobby information, this is a species best suited to keepers already comfortable with fast-flow, oxygen-rich loach setups rather than a first stone loach.
Conservation
Schistura carbonaria is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List. It is restricted to a cluster of central Vietnamese coastal river drainages, and while the current assessment does not indicate a threatened status, stream-restricted loaches of this kind are generally exposed to the same regional pressures as other Vietnamese freshwater fauna — damming, sedimentation and water-quality decline in river catchments. There is no indication in available sources that this species is a significant part of the aquarium trade; it appears to be collected, if at all, only incidentally.
