Schistura caudofurca is a small stone loach from the fast, clear headwaters of the Red River system on the China–Vietnam border and a handful of tributaries in Laos. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the one that supplies the hobby's true "stone" or "brook" loaches — bold little benthic hunters built for cool, oxygen-rich, moving water rather than the still, warm tanks many keepers default to. Reaching only around 3 in, it forages over gravel and sand for small invertebrates, and like most of its genus it is essentially undocumented in the aquarium: no confirmed captive spawning has been recorded, and even its size at maturity is unreported. The species is currently assessed as Least Concern, but that reflects a wide range rather than detailed population data.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura caudofurca was described by Mai Dinh Yen in 1978, hence the parentheses around the authority — it was originally placed in a different combination before settling into Schistura, the genus that today holds the great majority of Southeast and East Asian stone loaches. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, itself split away from the broader Cobitoidea as part of the wholesale reshuffling that also separated Botia's many segregate genera and moved countless species out of the old wastebasket genus Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus.

The name has a synonymy worth knowing: material referred to in the aquarium literature as "Schistura laterivittata" has been treated as a synonym of S. caudofurca, so care profiles written under that older name apply here. As with much of this genus, the valid combination follows the Catalog of Fishes, and Schistura caudofurca is the name in current use.

Morphology

This is a small, slender stone loach, reaching a reported maximum of about 3 in standard length — modest even by nemacheilid standards. Like other Schistura it has an elongate, subcylindrical body suited to holding position against current, a flattened head and underslung mouth for working the substrate, and the erectile suborbital spine typical of the group, tucked in a groove beneath the eye and flicked out defensively when the fish is handled or threatened.

Its skin, again typical of the family, is near-scaleless — a detail that matters far more for keeping the fish healthy than for identifying it, since it makes the species sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication. Beyond the basic body plan and the fork-marked tail pattern implied by its epithet, detailed morphological description is sparse in the available literature; this is a data-poor species outside of the original description and subsequent distribution records.

Habitat

Schistura caudofurca is known from the Red River drainage spanning southern China and northern Vietnam, and from the Nam Mat, Nam Xam and Nam Ma river systems in Laos — clear, fast-flowing streams running over gravel, rock and coarse sand. Water in this kind of habitat is cool to mild rather than tropical-warm, well-oxygenated, and under constant turnover from current, conditions shared across most true Schistura stone loaches.

It is exclusively a fresh, flowing-water fish, with no brackish or estuarine tolerance reported. The species sits within the broader Eurasian range of the family — from the Himalaya and Tibetan plateau, through Southeast and East Asia, into Central Asia and west toward Anatolia and Europe — and, in keeping with that pattern, has no native population anywhere in the Americas, Australia or sub-Saharan Africa.

Feeding

As with most Schistura, this is a benthic micro-predator: it forages along the streambed for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey typical of fast, clear water — rather than grazing algae or biofilm. Available notes describe it as broadly omnivorous in its foraging habits, taking what it finds while sifting sand and gravel.

In an aquarium setting the expectation, based on how closely related Schistura behave, is that it will readily take small live and frozen foods presented near the bottom — Daphnia, brine shrimp, bloodworm and similar — and may largely ignore dry flake floating above the substrate. A sinking, meaty diet fed at floor level suits this fish far better than a surface-feeding regime.

Mating

No sexual dimorphism has been documented for Schistura caudofurca in the sources available, and detail on courtship or spawning behaviour is essentially absent from the literature — a common situation for a stream-endemic stone loach that has drawn little research attention beyond its original description and range mapping. What can be said follows the pattern for the genus and family: nemacheilid stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and stones in flowing water with no pairing behaviour resembling the nest-guarding or mouthbrooding seen in other fish groups.

Given the total absence of aquarium spawning records for this species, any account of its mating behaviour beyond that general pattern would be speculation rather than documented fact, and is deliberately left out here.

Breeding

Schistura caudofurca is not known to have been bred in the aquarium. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care once eggs are laid — but this is inferred from the family's general reproductive pattern rather than from direct observation of this species.

This honesty matters: unlike a few hillstream loaches (Sewellia lineolata) or temperate spined loaches that have occasionally been spawned in captivity, there is no record of S. caudofurca reproducing outside its native streams. Any fish reaching the hobby is very likely wild-collected, and a keeper should not expect or plan for breeding this species at home.

In the aquarium

This is a small, active bottom-dweller for a cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated setup rather than a warm, still community tank — the mismatch between typical "tropical community" defaults and what a true stream-dwelling Schistura actually needs is the single biggest risk to keeping it well. A tank should replicate its native gravel-and-rock streambed with strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen, achieved through powerheads or a spray bar rather than gentle filtration.

Being near-scaleless, it shares the family's sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so half-doses and gentle products are the safer route if disease treatment becomes necessary. Feed a sinking, invertebrate-based diet at the substrate rather than relying on floating foods. Because so little is documented about this species' social needs, keeping it in a modest group and observing its behaviour is a sensible precaution, following the pattern of better-studied Schistura and other stone loaches that tend to do best with company of their own kind.

Conservation

Schistura caudofurca is assessed by the IUCN as Least Concern, an assessment made in 2010. This reflects its occurrence across a reasonably wide span of the Red River system in China and Vietnam together with several river systems in Laos, rather than any detailed population count — for a small stream-endemic loach like this, LC status is a statement about range breadth, not necessarily abundance security.

No specific trade or habitat pressures are documented for this species in the available sources. As with many Nemacheilidae, the honest picture is one of a data-sparse fish: basic biology such as maturity size and reproductive behaviour remains unreported, and any specimens reaching aquarists are presumed wild-collected rather than farmed or captive-bred.
