Taxonomy & naming
Schistura chindwinica was described by Tilak and Husain in 1990 as Nemacheilus chindwinicus, published in Mitteilungen aus dem Museum für Naturkunde in Berlin. At the time, Nemacheilus (and the closely related Noemacheilus) served as a broad catch-all genus for most Asian stone loaches. Subsequent revisions of the Nemacheilinae split that catch-all apart, and the species was reclassified into Schistura, the large genus that now holds the great majority of South and Southeast Asian stone loaches once lumped under the old names.
The species belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and a group whose taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as ichthyologists work out relationships among what were once treated as a handful of catch-all genera. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the current combination, Schistura chindwinica. The specific epithet references the Chindwin, a major tributary system of the Ayeyarwady in the wider region the species' relatives occupy, though this particular species is recorded from the neighbouring Brahmaputra drainage in Manipur.
Morphology
Schistura chindwinica is a small, elongate stone loach, reported to reach around 2.5 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely of small fish. Like other members of Schistura it shows a benthopelagic body plan suited to holding position on the bottom of flowing water: a slim, rounded-to-compressed body, a small ventrally-set mouth with barbels for detecting food on the substrate, and reduced or embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked.
The species is patterned with eight to eleven obscure dark grey bars along the flank, a fairly typical stone-loach camouflage pattern for a fish living over mixed gravel and stone. Mature males carry a conspicuous suborbital flap, a soft-tissue structure near the eye that is a common feature used to distinguish the sexes across Schistura. As with other Cobitoidea, an erectile spine sits in a groove beneath the eye — though in Schistura this structure is generally smaller and less weaponised than the prominent spines of the botiid loaches. The near-scaleless skin shared across the family makes the species, like its relatives, sensitive to medication and disease.
Habitat
This species is known only from a very restricted range: it is endemic to Manipur, in the Brahmaputra drainage of northeastern India, and has been recorded from just two streams. That is an extraordinarily narrow distribution even among stone loaches, many of which are single-drainage or single-stream endemics. It shares its home basin with several other Schistura species — the Barak-Surma-Meghna system in this region alone holds around eight recognised species of the genus.
As a typical Nemacheilidae, it is a benthic fish of running streams — cool to moderate, clear, well-oxygenated water flowing over stone and gravel, the kind of habitat that gives the family its common name of stone or brook loaches. Data on the specific stream conditions at its two known localities are sparse, but the genus as a whole strongly favours flowing streams and areas near riffles and small waterfalls where oxygen is highest, and this species should be assumed to need the same rather than warm, still water.
Feeding
Schistura chindwinica has not been specifically studied for diet, but the genus is well characterised: Schistura species are micro-predatory benthic omnivores, foraging over the streambed for small insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton. The small, underslung mouth and sensory barbels are built for picking prey items off and out of gravel and stone rather than grazing algae or taking food from the water column.
In captivity, genus-mates are typically kept on small live and frozen foods — bloodworm, small crustaceans such as brine shrimp and copepods, and sinking micro-pellets — with flake often ignored in favour of foods that reach and stay on the bottom. There is no aquarium-specific feeding record for this species, so the safest approach for a keeper attempting it would be to follow standard Schistura practice rather than guess at a bespoke diet.
Mating
No spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura chindwinica, and the species is essentially unknown in captivity, so there is nothing specific to report on courtship or pairing. What can be said comes from the genus and family more broadly: stone loaches show little instructive external dimorphism beyond features like the male suborbital flap noted for this species, and reproduction in Nemacheilidae generally follows a simple, non-elaborate pattern tied to flowing water rather than any courtship display or nest-building.
Given how restricted and poorly known this species is — confined to two streams and never established in the hobby — data on its reproductive biology should be treated as genuinely sparse rather than assumed from relatives.
Breeding
Stone and brook loaches in the genus Schistura are, as a rule, egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no nest-building and no parental care afterward. Schistura chindwinica has never been reported spawning in the aquarium, and there is no captive-breeding record to draw on — unsurprising for a fish that is not established in the trade at all.
The honest picture is simple: this species is rarely or never bred in captivity, its reproductive biology in the wild is not well documented beyond the general pattern typical of the genus, and any keeper who somehow acquired stock should expect a fish that spawns opportunistically in cool, well-oxygenated, flowing water with no parental investment — not a fish that can be paired and coaxed like a cave-spawning or mouthbrooding species.
In the aquarium
Schistura chindwinica is not a fish anyone should expect to find for sale — it appears rare to nonexistent in the aquarium hobby, with essentially no dedicated care documentation. What follows is drawn from genus-level Schistura care, offered as a guide only, not a species-specific certainty.
Stone loaches of this genus want cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water — a powerhead or strong filter outflow and a stony, gravel substrate rather than a warm, still community tank. Because the skin is near-scaleless, careful, reduced-strength medication is the rule if disease treatment is ever needed, exactly as with other loaches. Given the tiny known range of this particular species — two streams in Manipur — any specimens that did reach the trade should be treated as wild-collected and effectively irreplaceable, not a fish to experiment on.
Conservation
Schistura chindwinica is assessed by the IUCN as Vulnerable, an assessment dating to January 2010 under criteria B1ab(iii) and D2 — criteria that reflect both a very small range and ongoing decline in habitat quality. That listing fits a species known from only two streams in a single Brahmaputra tributary system in Manipur.
The recorded threats are siltation from slash-and-burn (jhum) agriculture in the surrounding hills and the prospect of hydroelectric dam construction affecting its limited range — pressures that could plausibly eliminate one or both of its known localities. As with many narrow-range Himalayan and northeastern-Indian stream endemics, there is no aquarium trade pressure to speak of here; the risk is entirely habitat-driven, tied to land use and water development in a small, specific corner of its region.
