Taxonomy & naming
Schistura coruscans was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, as part of his extensive revisionary work on the stone loaches of the Mekong basin. It belongs to the genus Schistura, itself part of the family Nemacheilidae, the true or brook loaches — a family that was carved out of the old, catch-all Cobitidae and Balitoridae in the taxonomic reshuffling of Cobitoidea that gathered pace through the 1990s and 2000s. Many species once lumped under Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus are now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera; coruscans has always stood as a Schistura since its description.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the authority for the valid combination Schistura coruscans, and no synonymy or reclassification is on record for this species. It is one of many narrow-range Schistura described from the Mekong system in Kottelat's surveys, most of which remain known from very restricted stretches of a single river basin.
Morphology
Schistura coruscans is a small loach, reaching only around 2.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely of small, slender-bodied stream fish. Like other members of the family it has a near-scaleless, elongated body built for holding position against current, and — as in other Schistura — an erectile suborbital spine tucked beneath the eye, a defensive structure shared across the true loaches. Its most striking feature is colour: the dorsal and caudal fins are bright red in life, while the anal, pelvic and pectoral fins are bright yellow-orange, giving the fish its 'flametail' trade name. Juveniles show a pattern of irregular dark bars that is not carried through to the more uniformly coloured adult.
The near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae leaves this species, like its relatives, more exposed than scaled fishes to medications and to skin and gill parasites — a point worth keeping in mind for anyone considering it in the aquarium.
Habitat
This species is endemic to the Nam San basin, a tributary of the Nam Ngum River within the greater Mekong basin in Laos, and it has not been recorded outside that drainage. It lives in riffles — the shallow, fast-flowing, stony stretches of small to medium streams — where it holds position among and beneath stones in cool, clear, well-oxygenated water.
As with most riffle-dwelling Schistura, this is a fast-water specialist rather than a still-water fish: the habitat is defined by current, a stony or gravel substrate, and consistently high dissolved oxygen, not the warm, slow blackwater conditions associated with many other tropical Asian fishes.
Feeding
Schistura coruscans is a benthic micro-predator, foraging over and among the stones of its riffle habitat for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and similar prey typical of fast, clear headwater and tributary streams. Its trophic level has been estimated at around 3.0, consistent with a diet built on small animal prey rather than algae or detritus.
No detailed dietary study has been published for this species specifically, and captive feeding data is essentially absent from the record; care recommendations here follow the well-documented pattern for riffle-dwelling Schistura generally, which take small live and frozen foods readily and often ignore dry flake.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura coruscans in the wild or in captivity. Nothing is published on sexing this species, and no reliable external dimorphism has been recorded. This is typical of the genus: most Schistura are known chiefly from taxonomic collections and river surveys, not from life-history study, and reproductive behaviour for the great majority of species — this one included — remains unrecorded.
Breeding
There is no published breeding record for Schistura coruscans, in the aquarium or in the wild. Based on the well-documented pattern across stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), the species is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care — the standard reproductive mode for the family. It should not be assumed to guard a cave like a goby, or to mouthbrood; loaches in this family simply do not do either.
As for most riffle-dwelling Schistura, captive breeding has essentially never been reported, and this species is no exception. Any fish reaching the trade almost certainly comes from wild collection rather than captive propagation, and data on this front remains genuinely sparse.
In the aquarium
Schistura coruscans occasionally appears in the specialist trade under the name flametail loach. Given its small size (under 3 in) and riffle-zone origins, it wants a tank set up to mimic fast, clear, cool-to-mild-temperature stream water: strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, a stony or coarse gravel substrate, and stable, clean water rather than the warm, still conditions suited to many other tropical aquarium fish.
As with other true loaches, its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based medications and to full-strength treatments generally — dose with care and prefer gentler, loach-safe products. Very little is documented about its captive husbandry specifically, and keepers should treat this as a specialist, data-sparse species rather than an easy community fish; err on the side of the well-documented needs of riffle Schistura more broadly (current, oxygen, cover) until more is known.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura coruscans as Data Deficient in January 2011, reflecting the near-total absence of population data, range mapping and threat assessment for this narrow-range Lao endemic. It is known only from the Nam San basin, a tributary of the Nam Ngum within the Mekong system in Laos — a genuinely restricted distribution for a species that has otherwise received little further study since its description.
Stream-endemic Schistura like this one are broadly vulnerable to the pressures affecting Mekong tributaries generally — damming, sedimentation and land-use change in catchment headwaters — but no species-specific threat data has been published for coruscans, and a Data Deficient listing is the honest and accurate summary of what is currently known.
