Taxonomy & naming
Schistura cryptofasciata was formally described by Chen, Kong & Yang in 2005 in the Raffles Bulletin of Zoology (vol. 13, Supplement, pp. 27–32), based on type specimens collected from the Nandinghe River subbasin of the Salween basin in Yongde County, Lincang Prefecture, Yunnan, China. The holotype measured 2.5 in SL.
It belongs to the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with hundreds of species distributed across South, Southeast and East Asia. Many older accounts lumped Schistura species under the broad genus Nemacheilus (or Noemacheilus); the modern, narrower Schistura is the combination recognised by the Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, and is retained here.
Morphology
The species epithet cryptofasciata combines the Greek crypto (hidden) with the Latin fasciata (barred, striped), referring to body bars that are obscured or faint in most individuals but become more visible in larger specimens — the "hidden bands" for which the fish is named.
As a member of Nemacheilidae, S. cryptofasciata shares the family's typical stone-loach build: an elongate, cylindrical body, a flattened head and belly suited to holding position on stream substrate, and small paired fins used to brace against current. Like many nemacheilids it carries the family's near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin, which matters for how it should be handled and medicated. FishBase records a maximum size of 3.5 in standard length, making it a modestly sized member of the genus. Habitat
Schistura cryptofasciata is known only from the Nandinghe (Nanting) River subbasin, part of the Salween (Thanlwin) basin, in Yunnan Province, southwestern China. The Salween basin in Yunnan is a high-relief mountain drainage, and species restricted to a single subbasin like the Nandinghe are typical of the fine-grained endemism seen across Schistura.
