Schistura deansmarti is one of the odder members of a large, mostly unremarkable family — a true stone loach that has traded the clear, fast riffles typical of Schistura for total darkness. It is known only from a single cave system in Thung Salaeng Luang National Park, Phitsanulok Province, Thailand, where it lives out its life in stagnant cave pools. Generations underground have left it troglomorphic: entirely depigmented, and in at least some individuals the external eyes are gone altogether, replaced by vestigial eyes sunk in subcutaneous pits. Nothing about it is bred or kept in aquaria — it is protected by Thai law, illegal to collect, and known to science from very little more than its cave.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura deansmarti was described by Chavalit Vidthayanon and Maurice Kottelat in 2003 as part of the broader revision of Southeast Asian nemacheilid loaches that reassigned many species out of the old catch-all genus Nemacheilus (sometimes spelled Noemacheilus in older literature) into the more narrowly defined Schistura. Older sources may therefore list it as Nemacheilus deansmarti; the current, valid combination is Schistura deansmarti.

The specific epithet honours a British speleologist involved in exploring and documenting the Thai cave systems where the species was collected. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by species count the largest family of loaches, and one whose Southeast Asian cave and karst faunas have turned up a number of blind or depigmented specialists like this one.

Morphology

Like other members of its family, Schistura deansmarti is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach with a near-scaleless body and an erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove below the eye — the small, sharp defensive spine typical of stone loaches. FishBase records a maximum size of about 4 in SL, making it one of the larger Schistura despite its very restricted range.

What sets it apart is its cave adaptation. The species is troglomorphic: every known specimen is entirely depigmented, having lost the mottled brown-and-tan camouflage pattern typical of surface-dwelling Schistura. Eyes are reduced or absent — some individuals lack external eyes altogether, while others retain only vestigial eyes recessed in subcutaneous pits, no longer functional for vision in the perpetual dark of the cave. This combination of blindness and loss of pigment is the classic signature of a long-isolated, obligate cave (troglobitic) population.

Habitat

This species is known only from a single cave system within Thung Salaeng Luang National Park in Phitsanulok Province, north-central Thailand, making it a true single-site endemic. Rather than the fast, riffling streams most stone loaches prefer, it inhabits stagnant pools inside the cave — still, dark, nutrient-poor water far removed from surface light and the seasonal cues that drive most nemacheilids.

No water-chemistry data from the wild habitat has been documented; the cave pools have not been characterised for temperature, pH or hardness in the sources available. What is clear is that this is not a flowing-stream fish in the usual Schistura mould — it is a permanent resident of a lightless, low-energy cave environment, a habitat type that a very small number of Southeast Asian cave loaches occupy.

Feeding

Diet has not been directly confirmed by study, but the species is presumed to feed on organic material and micro-organisms accumulating on the cave stream and pool beds, along with whatever benthic invertebrates and zooplankton drift or wash into the cave system. This fits the general pattern for troglobitic fishes, which typically subsist on detritus and small invertebrates rather than on the algae and biofilm that sighted, surface-dwelling stone loaches graze.

Because the species has never been maintained in captivity, there is no aquarium feeding record to draw on, and none should be expected — this is not a fish available to the trade.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura deansmarti. Its extreme habitat specialisation and the fact that it has never been kept or studied in captivity mean that essentially nothing is known about its reproductive biology beyond what can be inferred from its relatives.

Breeding

As with most stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), the expected mode for the genus is an egg-scatterer over gravel or stones in flowing water with no parental care — but for this species there is no direct observation to confirm it. No breeding has ever been recorded for Schistura deansmarti in the wild or in captivity, and given its cave habitat and legally protected, un-collectable status, none is likely to be. Data here is genuinely sparse; the honest position is that this species has not been bred or observed spawning.

In the aquarium

Schistura deansmarti is not an aquarium fish. Seriously Fish lists it for interest only, with no aquarium-kept specimens on record and no water-chemistry parameters to offer a keeper, because none of its wild habitat has been documented in that kind of detail. It is protected under Thai national law, and removing it from its cave is illegal.

The entry here exists to document the species as part of the stone and brook loach fauna, not as a care guide. Its story is a useful reminder of the family's range: for every widespread, easily bred and kept Schistura or Barbatula, there are single-site cave and karst endemics like this one that will likely never see an aquarium and depend entirely on the protection of their one known habitat.

Conservation

Schistura deansmarti is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Vulnerable. The listing reflects a very small population confined to a single cave system, an inherently restricted distribution, low tolerance for environmental degradation, and limited food availability within that cave environment — all typical vulnerabilities of an obligate troglobitic species with nowhere else to go.

It is protected under Thai law, and collection from its habitat in Thung Salaeng Luang National Park is illegal. Because the entire known population depends on the integrity of one cave system, any disturbance to that site — water pollution, altered hydrology, or physical disturbance of the cave — poses an outsized risk to the species' survival.
