Taxonomy & naming
Schistura diminuta was formally described in 2011 by Ou, Montaña, Winemiller and Conway, based on specimens collected from the Sekong River in Stung Treng Province, northern Cambodia — part of the lower Mekong basin. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of true loaches and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades; many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the standing authority for the valid combination, which remains Schistura diminuta.
The species epithet, diminuta, is Latin for "diminished" or "tiny" — a direct reference to its status as the smallest recognised species in a genus that already runs mostly small. Schistura is one of the most species-rich fish genera in the world, with several hundred described members spread across South, Southeast and East Asia, and new species — S. diminuta among them — continue to be described from poorly surveyed headwater streams.
Morphology
As a nemacheilid, Schistura diminuta has the classic stone-loach build: an elongate, subcylindrical body, a small ventral-ish mouth suited to picking food off the substrate, and paired barbels around the mouth for feeling out food in the current. Like other members of its genus it likely carries the small erectile suborbital spine typical of the group, and its skin is essentially scaleless or very finely scaled — a trait shared across nemacheilids that makes them sensitive to strong medications.
Its defining feature, however, is sheer size: the original description records a largest recorded standard length of just 1 in, making it the smallest species so far described within Schistura. Beyond that measurement and its type-locality collection, published morphological detail is limited — this is a recently described, narrowly known species, and much of its finer anatomy has not been popularised outside the primary taxonomic literature.
Habitat
Schistura diminuta is known from the Sekong River in the lower Mekong basin, Stung Treng Province, northern Cambodia. The Sekong is a major Mekong tributary draining out of the Annamite mountains, and like most habitats used by Schistura species, the reaches it inhabits are expected to be clear, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated rather than the sluggish, silty backwaters favoured by many other freshwater fish.
No dedicated water-chemistry study of this species has been published, so specific temperature, pH or flow figures are not available. What can be said with confidence, extrapolated from the genus as a whole, is that Schistura species characteristically occupy cool-to-moderate, clean, current-swept stream habitat over sand, gravel and rock, often near riffles or below small waterfalls — conditions very different from the warm, still blackwater sometimes assumed for "loach-shaped" fish.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Schistura diminuta has been published. Across the genus, Schistura species are bottom-dwelling micro-predators, picking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey — from among stream substrate using their barbeled, downturned mouths. There is no indication this species departs from that pattern.
In captivity, the reasonable expectation drawn from its relatives is that it would take small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and daphnia readily, while showing little interest in flake or other foods designed for water-column feeders. Given the species' minute adult size, any food offered would need to be correspondingly small.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism in Schistura diminuta. No aquarium or field observations of pairing or spawning behaviour are on record for this species.
Breeding
As with the vast majority of stone and brook loaches, there is no evidence Schistura diminuta has ever been bred in the aquarium, and no breeding account exists in the literature. The honest expectation, based on the genus, is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care — but this is inference from related Schistura species rather than a documented behaviour for S. diminuta itself. Data on this species is sparse enough that keepers should not expect to breed it, and any claim of a specific spawning method would be speculation beyond what has been recorded.
In the aquarium
Schistura diminuta is essentially unknown in the hobby — it has no established care profile on major aquarium reference sites, and given its tiny size, narrow known range and 2011 description, it is unlikely to be a fish most keepers will ever encounter as a deliberate purchase. Anyone who does keep it should follow the general Schistura template: a mature tank with a coarse sand-and-gravel substrate, rounded stones, strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen, standing in for the fast, clear stream habitat the genus depends on. Given its minute adult size — under 1 in — tankmates should be chosen with care, since it would be at risk from anything capable of eating a fish that small.
As with other nemacheilids, its near-scaleless skin means it should be treated cautiously with medications; full-strength doses formulated for scaled fish carry real risk, and gentler or half-strength treatment is the safer default. Because so little is documented, any husbandry recommendation here is extrapolated from the wider genus rather than confirmed for this species specifically.
Conservation
Schistura diminuta has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. It is known only from its 2011 type description in the Sekong River, a lower Mekong tributary in northern Cambodia, and no subsequent population or threat assessment appears to have been published. Given how narrowly it has been recorded and how little survey effort the genus's smaller headwater specialists tend to receive, its true range and status remain genuinely unclear — a case where "data sparse" is the accurate and honest description rather than a placeholder for a species that is actually well understood.
