Schistura dubia was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990, in a comprehensive revision of the Indochinese nemacheiline loaches that resolved dozens of species then crowded into the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus. That single 1990 work reshaped the family and produced many of the Schistura species now recognised from Thailand and the wider Indochinese region.
The species sits in the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches, within the genus Schistura — the largest genus of loaches, with several hundred species and counting as new stream surveys turn up further range-restricted forms. As with most of its genus-mates, Schistura dubia has not been the subject of a dedicated taxonomic revision since its original description, and no common English name is established for it in the hobby or literature.
Morphology
Schistura dubia shares the general body plan of the genus: an elongate, sub-cylindrical body that flattens slightly toward a flat-bellied underside built for hugging the streambed, a pointed snout, and small paired fins used to brace against current rather than for open-water swimming. Like other true loaches it carries an erectile spine in a groove beneath each eye — the suborbital spine — which it can flick out defensively when handled or threatened.
The skin is covered in very small, deeply embedded scales, leaving it functionally near-naked and, as in all Nemacheilidae, correspondingly sensitive to medication and rough handling.
