Taxonomy & naming
Schistura falamensis was described in 2020 by Chen, Myint, Chu & Chen from material collected in the Manipur River, in Falam District, Chin State, Myanmar — part of the upper Irrawaddy drainage. The species epithet falamensis refers directly to that type locality. The description places it within Schistura, the largest genus of stone loaches, distinguished from relatives by details of its bar pattern: 5–8 vertical bars on the body, indistinct barring anterior to the dorsal-fin origin, regular posterior bars roughly twice the width of the interspaces between them, a dissociated black bar at the base of the caudal fin, a complete lateral line, and — in males — a suborbital flap, along with a weak processus dentiformis (a small tooth-like projection on the lower jaw used in courtship and species diagnosis in this genus).
Nemacheilidae has been heavily reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades, with many species once lumped into Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus now split across Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera. Schistura falamensis was described directly under its current combination, so there is no old name to reconcile here, but the genus as a whole remains an active area of revision, and the Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name.
Morphology
The holotype is a 1.5 in SL male, putting Schistura falamensis at the small end of the genus, which as a whole spans roughly 1–6 in SL. It shows the classic Schistura body plan: an elongate, subcylindrical body suited to holding position against current, a pointed snout, and a pattern of dark vertical bars over a paler ground colour rather than a single bold marking. As in other members of the genus, males carry a fleshy suborbital flap, and the species can be told apart from close relatives by the specific spacing and number of its body bars and the shape of the caudal-fin base marking.
Like other Nemacheilidae, it carries a small erectile spine beneath the eye — a defensive feature shared across the wider Cobitoidea — and near-scaleless skin, a trait that has direct consequences for how sensitive this kind of fish is to medication in captivity. Beyond the formal description, detailed morphological and biological data are sparse; this is a very recently described, narrow-range species.
Habitat
The type locality is the main channel of the Manipur River near Falam, a medium-sized, fast-flowing river roughly 164 ft wide and about 7 ft deep where the type series was collected, with clear water over a rocky and sandy bed. Water chemistry recorded at the collection site was warm-temperate to subtropical rather than tropical-still: about 72 °F, pH 8.5 (distinctly alkaline), dissolved oxygen around 6.8 mg/L, and conductivity of 277 μS/m — readings consistent with a clear, well-aerated, mineral-bearing upland river rather than a soft, acidic blackwater system.
This places Schistura falamensis firmly in the stone-and-brook-loach mould: a fish of cool-to-mild, fast, highly oxygenated, rocky-bedded river habitat in the hills of western Myanmar, not a warm, still, tannin-stained environment. As with many newly described Nemacheilidae, it is currently known only from its type locality, and its broader distribution within the Manipur/Irrawaddy system has not been documented.
Feeding
No diet-specific study has been published for this species, but its family placement and morphology point clearly to the same ecological role shared across Nemacheilidae: a benthic micro-predator that forages over rock and gravel for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and similar prey — in fast, clear water.
In the aquarium, stone loaches of this kind are best offered small live or frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) and sinking pellets aimed at the bottom, since they are unlikely to compete effectively for food at the surface or in slow water, and flake is often ignored.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura falamensis. The one biologically informative detail from the type description is the presence of a suborbital flap and a weak processus dentiformis in males — features used across the genus both for species identification and, in life, likely in male-male interaction or courtship, as is typical for Schistura. Beyond that, sexual dimorphism and mating behaviour in this species are unrecorded; data is sparse, consistent with a species known only from its original type series.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura falamensis being bred in captivity, and this fits the pattern for the genus and family as a whole: stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers that broadcast eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care, and they are only rarely bred by hobbyists — most captivity accounts for Nemacheilidae are limited to maintenance, not reproduction. Given how recently this species was described and how little is known of it outside the type series, no meaningful captive-breeding information exists to report; the honest statement is that it is unbred and its reproductive biology in the aquarium is undocumented.
In the aquarium
Schistura falamensis is not established in the aquarium trade, and given its 2020 description from a single river system, it should be treated as a fish that is essentially unavailable and undocumented in captivity rather than a recommended species. Anyone encountering it would need to replicate the conditions of its type locality: cool-to-mild, fast-moving, well-oxygenated water over a rocky, sandy substrate, with strong water movement and high dissolved oxygen rather than a warm, still tank.
As with all Nemacheilidae, its near-scaleless skin means it should be assumed sensitive to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, warranting caution and reduced dosing if it were ever kept and required treatment. Because so little is published on this species specifically, any aquarium-care guidance beyond these family-level generalities would be guesswork, which this profile avoids.
Conservation
Schistura falamensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. This is typical for small-range Myanmar stream endemics described in the last few years — assessment backlogs mean many recently named Schistura species remain unevaluated even where their narrow ranges could plausibly warrant concern.
Known only from the Manipur River near Falam in Chin State, its conservation status is effectively unknown, and no information is available on population trends, threats, or trade pressure. Given the general pattern for narrow-range Nemacheilidae, habitat degradation and water-quality pressures in the Irrawaddy basin would be the plausible long-term concerns, but this is inference from the wider family, not a documented finding for this species.
