Taxonomy & naming
Schistura fasciata was formally described by Lokeshwor and Vishwanath in 2011 in the Journal of Threatened Taxa, based on specimens from the Barak River, part of the Brahmaputra drainage in Manipur, India — the species' only known locality. It sits in the genus Schistura, one of the largest and most species-rich genera in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which itself is the largest of the loach families. Older regional literature sometimes grouped these fish under the broader, now largely abandoned genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus, or under the family name Balitoridae, but the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid names — places this species in Nemacheilidae under Schistura.
The specific epithet fasciata is Latin for "banded," a direct reference to the dark brown transverse bars crossing the body — the single most obvious field character separating it from close congeners. As a recently described, single-drainage endemic, S. fasciata has not yet accumulated the kind of secondary literature, aquarium history or synonymy that older, more widespread Schistura species carry.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reported to reach about 3 in total length. The body carries 11 to 13 dark brown transverse bars across the flank — the banding pattern behind the species name — along with three prominent dark spots at the base of the dorsal fin, a moderately raised adipose crest running along the dorsal and ventral edges of the caudal peduncle, and an incomplete lateral line. The dorsal fin carries roughly 8.5 branched rays in the original description.
As a nemacheilid, S. fasciata shares the family's general stone-loach build: an elongate, subcylindrical body suited to holding position on the bed of fast water, small eyes set high on the head, and a ventral, sucker-like mouth ringed with barbels for picking food off stones and gravel. Like other true loaches it has an erectile suborbital spine and is effectively scaleless — the skin is thin and the fish is correspondingly sensitive to medications and handling, a point that matters for anyone who might one day keep it.
Habitat
The only documented locality for Schistura fasciata is the Barak River within the Brahmaputra drainage of Manipur, in north-eastern India — a hill-country river system feeding into the greater Brahmaputra basin. No broader range has been published, and the species should be treated as a single-drainage endemic unless further surveys extend it.
Detailed water-chemistry data — temperature, pH, flow rate — were not published alongside the original description and have not surfaced elsewhere. Going by the habits of its Schistura relatives and the general ecology of Nemacheilidae, it almost certainly occupies cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated hill-stream water over stone, gravel and sand rather than warm, still or blackwater conditions. That inference is offered cautiously — it is not confirmed for this species — and no aquarium keeper should treat it as a substitute for real data.
Feeding
No direct dietary study of Schistura fasciata has been published. Based on the near-universal habit of Schistura and other Nemacheilidae, it is best understood as a benthic micro-predator, working the stream bed for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — rather than grazing algae or browsing plant matter.
Were it ever kept, this feeding style would translate to sinking foods offered at the substrate: small live or frozen invertebrate foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) and sinking pellet or wafer foods formulated for bottom feeders, mirroring what works for its better-known congeners. Flake food sitting in the water column is unlikely to be taken by a fish built to forage head-down among stones.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism has been described for Schistura fasciata, and no spawning behaviour has been documented in the wild or in captivity. This is not unusual for a species known from a single formal description less than fifteen years old, with essentially no subsequent field or aquarium study.
In the absence of species-specific data, the safest statement is the general one for stone and brook loaches: Nemacheilidae as a family are egg-scatterers rather than pair-forming or cave-spawning fish, with no courtship display or nest-building on record for the group. Any more specific claim about this species' mating behaviour would be invention rather than fact, so none is offered here.
Breeding
Schistura fasciata has no recorded breeding history, wild or captive, and the original description does not touch on reproduction. What can be said comes from the pattern shared across Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches typically scatter adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward.
That pattern should be taken as a reasonable expectation for the genus rather than a documented fact for this species. Stone loaches in general are rarely bred in home aquaria, and a recently described, narrow-range endemic like S. fasciata — with no aquarium trade presence at all — has essentially no chance of a verified home spawning on record. Breeding mode here is inferred from the family, not observed in the species itself, and that distinction should stay clear to anyone using this profile.
In the aquarium
Schistura fasciata does not appear to be established in the aquarium hobby. No care profile, import record or keeper account was located for this species, and it should be treated as effectively unavailable and unstudied in captivity rather than as a stocked, documented aquarium fish.
If it were ever to appear in the trade, the sensible starting point would be the general husbandry rules for Schistura and other stone loaches: cool-to-moderate, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water over a stone-and-gravel substrate with good current, since this is a fast-water specialist rather than a still-water fish. As with all true loaches its near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, so any treatment would call for caution and reduced dosing. None of this is a substitute for real husbandry data, which simply does not yet exist for this species — a keeper encountering it should treat it as an unknown quantity and research the specific import population before purchase.
Conservation
Schistura fasciata has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and carries no conservation category; its status here is recorded honestly as Not Evaluated rather than guessed at. Species described this recently from a single river system frequently remain unassessed for years, simply because formal Red List review has not yet reached them.
As a single-drainage endemic restricted to the Barak River within the Brahmaputra system in Manipur, it would be vulnerable in principle to the pressures common to small hill-stream ranges — pollution, damming, siltation and habitat alteration — but no population trend or threat assessment has been published to confirm or quantify that risk. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; it does not appear to be in commercial circulation.
