Taxonomy & naming
Schistura fascimaculata was described by Mirza and Nalbant in 1981. It belongs to the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone or brook loaches — within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Nemacheilidae is by far the largest loach family, and Schistura is one of its largest genera, with several hundred described species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia.
Older literature on this genus often used the now-obsolete combinations Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus, a broad catch-all genus that twentieth-century revisions progressively split apart; species now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera were once lumped together under those names. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the current authority for the valid name and combination, and this account follows it in keeping the species in Schistura.
Morphology
