Taxonomy & naming
Schistura finis was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, part of his long-running revision of the stone-loach faunas of mainland Southeast Asia. It sits in Schistura, by far the largest genus of loaches and one of the largest genera of freshwater fishes anywhere, with several hundred described species distributed from Afghanistan across the Himalaya and Indochina to southern China. Many older accounts of this fauna used the now-largely-abandoned genus Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus for fish that current taxonomy places in Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and several other segregate genera; the Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, and it lists this species as Schistura finis.
The genus belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. The specific epithet finis is Latin for "border" or "boundary," a direct reference to the type locality on the Laos–Vietnam frontier rather than to any feature of the fish itself.
Morphology
Like the great majority of its genus, Schistura finis is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach, reported to reach about 3.5 in in standard length. As a member of Nemacheilidae it carries the family's characteristic near-scaleless or very finely scaled skin, which leaves it particularly exposed to medications and rough handling. Where the trait has been checked in related Schistura, an erectile suborbital spine of the kind found across the loach superfamily is typically present, though it is far less conspicuous than the stout spine of a botiid loach such as the clown loach.
Beyond size and the general Schistura body plan — a slim, torpedo-shaped fish with a flattened belly suited to gripping rock and gravel in current — detailed morphological description, colour pattern and fin-ray counts for this species are not covered in the available sources. Given how narrowly it has been surveyed, that is unsurprising rather than a gap in reporting.
Habitat
Schistura finis is known only from the headwaters of the Nam Mo River basin, a small stream system straddling the Laos–Vietnam border. This is classic hillstream habitat for the genus: cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated water running over rock and gravel in upland forest catchment. Sources report a working range of roughly 61–77 °F and a soft, slightly acidic to neutral pH of about 6–7.5 — meaningfully cooler and softer than the warm, still or slow-flowing water many aquarium loaches are drawn from, and a reminder that not all loaches are tropical, lowland fish.
The species has not been recorded outside this single small border catchment. That narrow range, combined with how little the area has been surveyed, is the central fact of its conservation picture as much as its natural history.
Feeding
Schistura finis is a benthic micro-predator, the typical feeding mode across the genus. FishBase places it at a trophic level of roughly 3.0, consistent with an omnivorous-to-carnivorous diet built around small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae and small crustaceans picked from among rocks and gravel in fast water — rather than grazing on algae or biofilm in the manner of a hillstream loach like Sewellia or Gastromyzon.
In aquarium terms, related Schistura and stone loaches in general take sinking pellets and wafers readily, but do best with a meaningful share of frozen or live foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, daphnia — that better match a wild diet of small invertebrates picked off the streambed. There is no dedicated feeding study for this species; the picture above is inferred from its trophic level and the general habits of the genus.
Mating
Nothing specific has been documented about courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour in Schistura finis. FishBase records its maturity data as unknown, and no aquarium or field spawning accounts exist in the available sources. This is the normal state of affairs for a narrow-range stone loach that has never entered the aquarium trade and has been the subject of very limited fieldwork beyond its original description.
Breeding
There are no breeding records for Schistura finis in captivity or in the wild. Based on what is known for Nemacheilidae generally, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: ripe fish release adhesive or semi-adhesive eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. This is the pattern documented for related stone and brook loaches, and it stands in clear contrast to the cave-guarding male behaviour of gobies or the mouthbrooding seen in some cichlids — loaches as a group are egg-scatterers, not guarders.
Given the total absence of aquarium history for this species, the honest summary is simple: it has never been bred in captivity, and there is no reason to expect that to change soon given how little is known even about its basic life history in the wild.
In the aquarium
Schistura finis is not established in the aquarium hobby; there are no records of it being kept, imported or traded. This profile is included for taxonomic completeness within Schistura rather than as a care guide for a fish keepers are likely to encounter.
Were it ever to appear, its needs would follow directly from its habitat: cool, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water in the 61–77 °F range with a soft, slightly acidic-to-neutral pH of about 6–7.5, strong filtration to replicate stream current, and a rocky, gravel substrate rather than a soft sandy one. As with all nemacheilids its near-scaleless skin would call for caution with copper-based and full-strength medications. Any keeper encountering this species should treat it as a scientific curiosity requiring stream-tank conditions, not a beginner community fish.
Conservation
Schistura finis is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN Red List, an assessment dating to 2010. That status reflects a genuine narrowness of range — the species is known only from the headwaters of the Nam Mo basin on the Laos–Vietnam border — combined with a lack of subsequent survey effort rather than any documented decline.
As with many single-catchment stone loaches across Indochina, the practical risks are the general pressures on small upland streams: deforestation, damming and water extraction, and agricultural runoff within the catchment. No population trend, harvest, or trade data exists for this species, and it is not part of the aquarium trade. Without further fieldwork in the Nam Mo headwaters, its true conservation status is simply unknown.
