Taxonomy & naming
Schistura gangetica was described by A. G. K. Menon in 1987, one of hundreds of species Menon and later revisers carved out of the old, over-broad genus Nemacheilus (and its near-synonym Noemacheilus) as the stone-loach fauna of South and Southeast Asia was gradually resolved species by species. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and a group still under active taxonomic revision.
The genus Schistura is now recognised as the most species-rich genus of nemacheilid loaches, with close to 190 valid species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer) is the reference for the currently accepted combination, Schistura gangetica; where older literature uses Nemacheilus gangeticus or Noemacheilus gangeticus, that reflects the pre-revision genus, not a different fish.
Morphology
Schistura gangetica is a small, elongate loach, reported to reach about 3 in in standard length — modest even by stone-loach standards. Like other members of the genus it has a slender, only lightly compressed body suited to holding position in fast water, a pointed head, and the small, low-set mouth typical of a bottom-foraging nemacheilid.
As in other true loaches it carries an erectile spine hidden in a groove below the eye — the suborbital spine, used defensively and easily missed until the fish is handled. The skin is covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave it functionally near-scaleless, a feature shared across the family and one with direct consequences for how the fish tolerates disease and medication. Detailed population-level colour pattern data for this species is sparse in the available sources; as with many regional Schistura, precise identification often rests on fin-ray counts and other meristic detail rather than colour alone.
Habitat
The species is known from the western Himalayan drainages of Uttar Pradesh, India — part of the wider Ganges (Gangetic) river system that gives the species its epithet. It inhabits shallow, clear, swift-flowing streams with a pebbly bottom, the classic habitat of a Schistura: cool-to-moderate hill-stream water kept oxygen-rich by constant turbulence over stone and gravel.
This is a benthopelagic tropical freshwater fish, living close to the streambed but moving up into the water column to feed and hold position against current. It is a fish of flowing, well-aerated foothill water rather than still or blackwater habitat, and — as is true for a great many range-restricted Schistura — it is best treated as a single-locality or narrow-range species until further survey work says otherwise.
Feeding
Schistura gangetica sits at a trophic level of about 3.0 — a secondary consumer and, in practical terms, a micro-predator. Across the genus, Schistura species pick small insects, worms, crustaceans and zooplankton from the streambed and drift, with only incidental plant matter in the diet; they are functionally omnivorous but lean strongly carnivorous.
In an aquarium setting this translates to a fish that wants small live or frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small chopped invertebrates — and sinking foods it can find on the bottom; a fish adapted to picking live prey out of fast water may be slow to recognise dry flake.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura gangetica specifically in the sources available. Across the genus, Schistura are secretive spawners: pairs or small groups are reported to lay eggs in hidden locations, tucked into dense vegetation or gravel interstices, out of sight of both predators and observers, which is a large part of why so little is recorded about reproduction in this genus.
Given the species' narrow known range and modest size, and the general data-sparseness typical of regional Schistura, no reliable account of sexual dimorphism or courtship behaviour can be offered here; it would be better to say plainly that this is unknown than to guess.
Breeding
Schistura gangetica is, so far as the record shows, not bred in home aquaria. As a stone/brook loach it is presumed — consistent with its genus and family — to be an egg-scatterer that lays eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care once eggs are laid; SeriouslyFish notes that Schistura as a genus are difficult to breed in captivity, laying eggs secretively in hidden spots or heavy vegetation rather than in the open.
Minimum population doubling time for the species is reported at 1.4 to 4.4 years, which points to a moderately productive life history in the wild, but this is demographic data, not evidence of captive spawning. There is no record of successful aquarium breeding for this species, and it should be assumed unavailable as captive-bred stock.
In the aquarium
Schistura gangetica is not established in the aquarium trade and has no recorded commercial value, so most of what follows is drawn from the general requirements of its genus rather than specific keeper reports for this species. Like other Schistura it would need cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, spotlessly clean, highly oxygenated water — SeriouslyFish specifically flags that Schistura species demand immaculate water quality, with large weekly water changes of 30–50% as routine rather than exceptional. A tank set up to mimic a shallow riffle — smooth gravel and pebbles, strong flow, high surface agitation — would suit it far better than a still, planted community tank.
As with all nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin makes it sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dose. Given the lack of trade data or keeper reports, anyone who does encounter this species should treat it as a specialist fish for a dedicated cool-flowing streambed setup, not a generalist community loach.
Conservation
Schistura gangetica is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern, with the assessment dated 19 April 2010 and the population trend recorded as stable. It is not listed under CITES or CMS and has no recorded commercial fishery or aquarium-trade value, which likely reduces direct exploitation pressure even as its restricted Himalayan foothill range leaves it exposed to more general threats affecting hill streams, such as water diversion, siltation and habitat disturbance.
As is typical for narrowly distributed Schistura known from a limited part of the Ganges drainage, detailed population monitoring is sparse, and the Least Concern status should be read as reflecting the best available data at the time of assessment rather than an exhaustive survey. No population decline or trade-driven pressure has been documented for this species in the sources reviewed here.
