Taxonomy & naming
Schistura harnaiensis was described by Mirza & Nalbant in 1969, with the type locality in the Harnai area of Pakistan giving the species its epithet. Like many stone loaches of South and Central Asia, it was originally described or long carried in older literature under the genus Nemacheilus (and sometimes cited as Noemacheilus harnaiensis); the broad, unwieldy "Nemacheilus" of mid-20th-century ichthyology has since been split many times over; as with a great many of its relatives, this species is now placed in Schistura, the genus that today holds the majority of South and Southeast Asian stone loaches formerly lumped under that older name.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and one still being actively revised as ichthyologists work through its many single-stream endemics. Morphology
As a member of Schistura, S. harnaiensis is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach built for life on the stream bed, with the pointed head, ventrally flattened underside and barbeled mouth typical of the genus. Like other nemacheilids it carries the family's near-scaleless, delicate skin, which makes it — and its relatives — notably sensitive to medication and to poor water quality.
Specific measurements for this species have not been located in the available literature; typical adult Schistura run in the range of roughly 1–3 in, and it is reasonable to expect S. harnaiensis falls within that range, but until a documented figure surfaces this should be treated as an estimate rather than a confirmed size for the species. Schistura harnaiensis is presumed to feed as other members of its genus do: as a bottom-dwelling micro-predator picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, small crustaceans and zooplankton — off the stream bed and among stones in fast-flowing water. This diet is well documented for the genus as a whole even where it has not been specifically studied in this species.
In captivity, related Schistura readily accept small live and frozen foods such as Daphnia, brine shrimp and bloodworm, and tend to be indifferent to dried flake; the same pattern would be the reasonable expectation for S. harnaiensis, though no aquarium feeding record for this particular species exists in the sources consulted here.

As with virtually all nemacheilids, its near-scaleless skin makes it likely to be sensitive to copper and to full-strength medication, so any treatment should be approached cautiously and at reduced dose if this or a closely related species is ever kept. Given its Endangered status and the total absence of an aquarium trail, it is not a species to source for the hobby; conservation of its native stream, not aquarium keeping, is the relevant priority.

As a single-stream endemic confined to the Harnai area of Pakistan, it fits the pattern common to many Nemacheilidae: a narrow native range makes the species inherently vulnerable to habitat disturbance, water abstraction or pollution affecting that one system, and its Endangered status should be read in that light.
