Schistura hiranyakeshi is a small, freshly described stone loach known only from the Hiranyakeshi River near Amboli in the Northern Western Ghats of Maharashtra, India. Described in 2020 and named for its home river, it is a tiny fish — reaching barely 1.5 in — with a golden-yellow ground colour, nine or ten dark body bars and a distinctive crimson flush in the fins of mature males. Like most of its genus it is a bold, cool-water micro-predator of clear, fast, well-oxygenated hill streams, and like most Schistura it is essentially unknown in the aquarium hobby and barely studied outside its type description — a genuinely data-sparse species from a single river system.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura hiranyakeshi was formally described in 2020 by Praveenraj, Thackeray & Balasubramanian in the journal aqua — International Journal of Ichthyology (volume 26, issue 2), based on specimens collected from the Hiranyakeshi River at Amboli, Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of mostly Eurasian species — and sits in the genus Schistura, one of the family's largest and most species-rich genera, distributed across South and Southeast Asia.

The species is diagnosed from its congeners by a combination of characters: an incomplete lateral line with only 6–7 pores, 9–10 body bars that are as wide as or wider than the pale interspaces between them, dorsal and caudal fins without spots, black markings on the lower lip, and the absence of a suborbital flap or an axillary pelvic lobe. As a 2020 description this is a recently recognised species, and no synonymy or generic reassignment has been noted since; it is treated here under its original combination, Schistura hiranyakeshi.

Morphology

This is a small nemacheilid loach, reaching a maximum of about 1.5 in in standard length — tiny even by the standards of the stone-and-brook-loach group. The body carries a golden-yellow ground colour crossed by 9–10 dark bars that are equal to or broader than the light bands between them, giving a fairly heavily-marked, high-contrast pattern rather than the sparser barring seen in some congeners. The dorsal and caudal fins are plain, without the spots or speckling some Schistura show, while the lower lip bears distinct black marks. Mature males develop a crimson flush across the fins, a striking secondary feature not present in females.

As in other members of the genus, Schistura hiranyakeshi lacks a suborbital flap and an axillary pelvic lobe — features used to separate it from related species — and it has the erectile suborbital spine typical of the broader loach superfamily Cobitoidea, along with the small, deeply embedded scales and largely naked-feeling skin that make nemacheilids, like other loaches, sensitive to medication.

Habitat

The species is endemic to the Hiranyakeshi River system, a tributary that rises as a fresh mountain stream in the Northern Western Ghats near Amboli, Sindhudurg district, Maharashtra, before feeding into the wider Krishna River drainage. A multi-year fish-fauna survey of this stretch recorded 57 fish species, 21 of them endemic to Western Ghats river systems, underlining how much locally unique diversity these small hill streams hold. Water quality across most of the surveyed reach fell within WHO standards for a clear, cool, well-oxygenated hill-stream habitat, though localized pollution from domestic sewage and sugar-mill effluent was noted at one site downstream.

Schistura hiranyakeshi is known only from this river system, which places it among the many Western Ghats stream endemics whose entire known range is a single watershed. Nothing in the available literature suggests it occurs more widely, and as with many recently described Schistura, its habitat requirements beyond the type locality — clear, fast, oxygen-rich flowing water over gravel and sand — are inferred from the family and genus rather than from a broad range of field observations.

Feeding

Nemacheilid loaches as a family are micro-predators, working the streambed for small invertebrates and organic matter rather than grazing algae or scavenging broadly, and there is no reason from the available sources to expect Schistura hiranyakeshi to differ. In the wild it most likely picks aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates from among gravel and sand in fast-flowing water.

No aquarium feeding records exist for this species specifically. Based on the family's general habits, a captive diet would need to lean on sinking, meaty foods — small live or frozen fare such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia alongside sinking pellets — rather than flake, which a bottom-oriented micro-predator in fast water is unlikely to take reliably.

Mating

No specific courtship or spawning observations have been published for Schistura hiranyakeshi; the species is known essentially from its type description and subsequent taxonomic and range notes, not from breeding studies. The only documented sexual difference is the crimson flush that develops in the fins of mature males, which is presumably a breeding-season or maturity signal, as it is in a number of related Schistura, but no direct account of pairing or spawning behaviour exists in the sources consulted here.

For the wider Nemacheilidae, spawning is generally linked to seasonal rainfall and the resulting changes in water level, flow and temperature, which are thought to trigger reproduction in the wild. It would be reasonable to expect a similar seasonal cue in this species, but that is an inference from the family rather than a documented fact for Schistura hiranyakeshi itself, and it should be read as such.

Breeding

As with most stone and brook loaches, Schistura hiranyakeshi is not known to have been bred in the aquarium. The general pattern for Nemacheilidae is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, triggered by seasonal rains, with eggs hatching in roughly 24 hours and no parental care of any kind afterward — no cave-guarding male, no mouthbrooding, just eggs released into the current and left to develop on their own.

There is no published record specific to this species confirming spawning behaviour in the wild or captivity, so the honest position is that its breeding biology is inferred from the genus and family rather than observed directly. Given how recently it was described, how restricted its known range is, and how poorly documented small endemic Schistura generally are outside their original description, data on this species' reproduction remains sparse, and captive breeding has not been reported.

In the aquarium

Schistura hiranyakeshi is not established in the aquarium trade and there are no husbandry accounts to draw on; nothing in the cache indicates it has ever been kept or offered commercially. Any care approach would have to be extrapolated cautiously from its wild habitat and from the general needs of small Nemacheilidae: cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel or sand substrate, strong filtration to replicate stream current, and a diet of small sinking live or frozen foods rather than flake.

As a near-scaleless loach it would be expected to share the family's sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, meaning careful, reduced dosing would be the sensible default if it were ever kept. Given its tiny 1.5 in adult size and single-river endemism, it is best regarded as a scientifically interesting micro-endemic rather than a fish with any current aquarium history, and speculative husbandry claims beyond what is written here would not be grounded in the record.

Conservation

Schistura hiranyakeshi has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List. It was only described in 2020, and no assessment has followed in the years since, so it is treated here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed category. Its entire known distribution is the Hiranyakeshi River system in the Northern Western Ghats, a global biodiversity hotspot where a large share of the fish fauna — 21 of 57 species recorded in one multi-year survey of this same river system — is locally endemic.

The habitat survey covering this stretch found water quality mostly within acceptable standards, but flagged localized pollution from domestic sewage and sugar-mill effluent at one site downstream of the type locality. Single-river endemics like this one are inherently vulnerable to any concentrated pressure — pollution, damming, water abstraction or habitat alteration — precisely because they have nowhere else to go; a formal conservation assessment would be valuable given how narrow its known range is, but none exists yet.
