Taxonomy & naming
Schistura hypsiura was formally described in 2014 by Walter Bohlen, Vendula Slechtová and Chavalit Udomritthiruj, in a paper distinguishing it from its congeners on the basis of its unusually deep caudal peduncle. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with hundreds of small, often localised species spread across Eurasia. The genus Schistura itself is one of the most species-rich in the whole family, and many of its members were historically lumped under the older, now largely abandoned genus Nemacheilus (or Noemacheilus); the Catalog of Fishes governs the currently valid combination, which remains Schistura hypsiura.
As with many recently described Schistura, the species is known essentially only from its original description and a handful of secondary listings — there is no deep secondary literature or long hobby history to draw on, and no earlier synonym in wide circulation.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small loach: the original type series topped out at 3 in standard length, making Schistura hypsiura the smallest species in its genus. The body carries roughly six to eight dark vertical bars along the flank, the banded pattern that gives the fish its Super Convict Loach trade name. Its most distinctive anatomical feature is a caudal peduncle that is as deep as, or deeper than, the rest of the body, without the dorsal or ventral skin crests seen in some relatives, paired with a deeply forked caudal fin.
Like other nemacheilids it carries an erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive spine hidden in a fold of skin below the eye that can be flicked out and readily catches in fine mesh nets. The skin is effectively naked, covered only in tiny embedded scales, which — as with all loaches of this kind — makes the fish considerably more sensitive to medication and to poor water quality than a scaled fish would be. Adult males and females can be told apart: mature males develop a triangular flap of skin below the eye, while females over about 2 in develop a well-defined suborbital groove instead.
Habitat
Schistura hypsiura is known only from its type locality, the Kyeinthali Chaung at Ka La Byin in southern Rakhine State, south-west Myanmar — a short, independent coastal river system rather than part of one of the region's major drainages. No other populations have been documented, so for now the species should be treated as a narrow-range endemic of this one river system.
The water there is the classic stone-loach environment: cool to moderately warm, clear, fast-flowing and well-oxygenated, running over rock, gravel and sand rather than through still or heavily vegetated water. Seriously Fish records a temperature range of 64–75 °F and a pH of 6.0–7.5, figures well below the warm, soft blackwater conditions often assumed for Southeast Asian fish, and this reflects a fast hill-and-foothill stream rather than a lowland swamp.
Feeding
In the wild Schistura hypsiura is a micro-predator, picking small invertebrates — aquatic insects, worms and small crustaceans — off the streambed among stones and gravel. This matches the general pattern for Schistura and other stone loaches, which forage almost constantly along the bottom of fast, clear water rather than grazing algae or biofilm.
In the aquarium, small live and frozen foods are preferred and recommended: bloodworm, Artemia and Daphnia are all taken readily, and sinking foods generally are far more useful than surface flake, which this bottom-dwelling species may largely ignore.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species, in the aquarium or in the wild. What is known is confined to the sexual dimorphism recorded in the original description: mature males carry a triangular suborbital skin flap, while females above roughly 2 in develop a suborbital groove, features presumably tied to spawning behaviour or embrace but not otherwise described.
Given how little is documented even for far more commonly kept Schistura, and the fact that this species is known from a single small river and has essentially no aquarium history, it is honest to say that its reproductive behaviour is currently undescribed rather than to guess at specifics.
Breeding
Breeding has not been recorded for Schistura hypsiura, either in captivity or in scientific literature. Based on what is known for Schistura and stone and brook loaches generally, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — but this is an inference from the wider genus, not an observation of this species itself.
As with the great majority of Nemacheilidae, this is not a fish with any established home-breeding protocol. Anyone keeping it should expect to enjoy it as a long-term display fish rather than plan on spawning it; if breeding is ever achieved, it would be a genuinely notable first for the species.
In the aquarium
Being the smallest species in its genus, Schistura hypsiura suits a modestly sized aquarium better than many stone loaches, but it still needs the conditions this whole group demands: cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, flowing water rather than a warm, still community tank. A sand or fine gravel substrate with smooth rocks and cobbles to explore, strong filtration for both flow and oxygenation, and a tightly fitted lid are all advisable — like most small benthic loaches it is an accomplished escape artist and appreciates cover to retreat into.
Because it is essentially scaleless, it is medication-sensitive in the same way as its relatives: treatments should be dosed cautiously, ideally at reduced strength, and copper-based medications avoided. As a narrow-range endemic with no established captive-breeding record, any specimens in the trade are very likely wild-collected, which is a further reason to keep water quality and husbandry conservative and to avoid unnecessary losses.
Conservation
Schistura hypsiura has not been formally assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. This is common for recently described, narrow-range stream loaches, but it also means there is no formal read on population trend or threat level.
What is documented is that the species is known only from a single short coastal river system in Rakhine State, Myanmar — a genuinely narrow range by any measure. Species restricted to one small drainage are inherently vulnerable to habitat degradation, pollution or water extraction even without a formal assessment flagging the risk, and any collection for the aquarium trade should be weighed against that narrow known distribution rather than assumed to be sustainable by default.
