Schistura irregularis is a small stone loach known only from the Nam Khan, a tributary of the Mekong in Laos. It belongs to Schistura, the largest genus of true loaches, whose members fill the fast, clear, oxygen-rich hill streams of South, Southeast and East Asia with small, bottom-hugging micro-predators. Like most of its relatives it has never entered the aquarium trade and has barely been studied since its description — the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, and this profile is honest about how little beyond its basic anatomy and type locality is actually known.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura irregularis was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, part of his long-running work cataloguing the freshwater fishes of Laos. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with well over 500 described species split across dozens of genera such as Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and Oxynoemacheilus. Schistura itself is the biggest genus in that family, with more than 200 species recognised across South, Southeast and East Asia, many of them narrow-range stream endemics described only in the last few decades.

No search of the literature turns up an older combination for this species — it appears to have been placed in Schistura from its original description onward, unlike many nemacheilids that were shuffled out of the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus as the family was revised. The species epithet irregularis refers to the fish's colour pattern, an irregular arrangement of dark bars rather than the neat, evenly spaced banding seen in many of its relatives.

Morphology

Schistura irregularis is a small, slender loach, reaching a modest 3.5 in in standard length. Like other members of its genus it has an elongate, cylindrical body built for holding position on the bed of a fast stream, a flattened underside, and a small, ventrally placed mouth suited to picking food items off gravel and stone. Its skin is essentially naked to the eye — Nemacheilidae are near-scaleless loaches, a trait that matters for how sensitive the group is to medication.

The pattern that gives the species its name consists of seven to nine dark bars across the body that are noticeably wider than the pale interspaces between them, giving an irregular, heavy-banded look rather than the fine, regular striping of some congeners. As in other Schistura, an erectile spine sits in a groove below the eye — a defensive feature shared across the true loaches. Beyond these points, detailed morphological data for the species is sparse; it has not been the subject of focused anatomical study since its original description.

Habitat

The species is known from the Nam Khan, a tributary of the Mekong in Xiangkhouang Province, Laos, with the type locality at Muang Hian on that river. As a Schistura from a Lao hill drainage, it is a fish of cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing stream water over gravel and stone — the classic hillstream habitat that this genus specialises in across mainland Southeast Asia.

No detailed water-chemistry data (temperature, pH) has been published for the type locality or for the species specifically, and the available sources do not extend its known range beyond the Nam Khan system. That narrow, single-stream distribution is typical of many Schistura species and is itself a large part of why the species is so poorly known — it has likely never been the subject of a dedicated survey since its description.

Feeding

Schistura irregularis is recorded with a trophic level around 3.0, placing it as a benthic micro-predator rather than a grazer or omnivore. This fits the pattern seen across the genus: Schistura species forage over stony, fast-flowing stream beds for small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates living among the gravel — rather than browsing algae or biofilm.

No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, since it is not known to be kept in the hobby. Based on the diet of closely related Schistura species, it would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and chopped invertebrates readily, while likely ignoring dry flake — a pattern typical of small benthic micro-predators from fast water.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura irregularis. The species has not been recorded in the aquarium trade, and its FishBase account itself marks the reproductive-mode field as unknown, reflecting how little fieldwork or captive observation has touched this fish since its description in 2000.

What can be said comes from the genus as a whole: stone and brook loaches, including well-studied Schistura relatives, are egg-scatterers that spawn without any nest-building or parental care, releasing eggs over gravel and stone in fast-flowing water. There is no reason from the available evidence to expect S. irregularis to differ from that general pattern, but this is an inference from its relatives rather than a direct observation of the species.

Breeding

There is no breeding record for Schistura irregularis in the aquarium or in the wild beyond the inference drawn from its genus. Like the great majority of stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer over gravel in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry — the standard nemacheilid pattern seen in the handful of related Schistura species that have been observed spawning.

The species has never been reported in the ornamental trade, so there is no commercial breeding program to draw on either — unlike the hormone-farmed botiids, this is simply a fish that has not been bred, studied, or kept by hobbyists. Any care or breeding guidance for this species would be speculative; the honest position is that its reproductive biology is effectively unknown.

In the aquarium

Schistura irregularis is not a species in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry data exists for it specifically. Because so little is documented, any care advice here has to be drawn from its genus and family rather than from direct experience with this fish. Schistura and other Nemacheilidae generally need cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water over a gravel or stone substrate to thrive — a still, warm community tank is the wrong environment for a hillstream micro-predator like this.

As with all nemacheilid loaches, the near-scaleless skin means any hypothetical captive specimen would be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, and would likely be an early indicator of poor water quality or disease in a mixed collection. Given the total absence of trade or husbandry records, this species should be treated as effectively unavailable and unstudied in captivity rather than as a realistic stocking option.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura irregularis as Data Deficient, an assessment made in 2011. That status reflects a genuine gap rather than reassurance: the species is known only from its Nam Khan type locality in the Mekong basin of Laos, it has a low vulnerability-to-fishing score reflecting its small size and habits rather than any population data, and no dedicated conservation study appears to have been carried out since its description.

As with many single-stream Schistura endemics, the honest conservation picture is that almost nothing is known about population size, trend, or specific threats. Given its narrow known range, general pressures on Southeast Asian hill streams — deforestation, sedimentation, damming and water extraction in the Mekong basin — would plausibly affect it, but no source documents a specific threat or population assessment for this species, and none should be invented here.
