Taxonomy & naming
Schistura kangjupkhulensis was described by the Indian ichthyologist Sunder Lal Hora in 1921, most likely under the older genus name Nemacheilus, in keeping with the nomenclature of the period. Like a great many of the small Asian stream loaches once lumped into Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus, it has since been placed in Schistura following the broad revision of the family — a re-shuffling that has touched dozens of species across South and Southeast Asia. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Schistura kangjupkhulensis (Hora, 1921), with the parentheses around the author's name signalling that the species was originally described in a different genus.
The species sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest and most species-rich family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Schistura is itself an enormous genus of small, boldly barred or blotched stream loaches distributed across South, Southeast and East Asia, and S. kangjupkhulensis is one of many range-restricted species scattered through the hill streams of the Indo-Burman region.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reported to reach around 3 in in total length. Like other Schistura it has an elongate, only lightly compressed body suited to holding position against current, with 7–11 irregular dark bars crossing the flanks and a caudal fin with 8+7 branched rays and an emarginate (shallowly forked) trailing edge. The lateral line is incomplete, a common feature in small nemacheilids, and males of this species lack a suborbital flap — a fold of skin near the eye that is present in some related species and can help distinguish the sexes.
As in other true loaches, the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales, leaving the fish effectively naked and, by extension, sensitive to poor water quality and to medications formulated for scaled fish. Nemacheilids typically also carry a small erectile spine beneath the eye, though no specific note on this structure in S. kangjupkhulensis was found in available sources; care should assume the same scaleless-skin sensitivity that applies across the family.
Habitat
Schistura kangjupkhulensis is known from the Tizu, Imphal and Nambul Rivers within the Chindwin River basin in Manipur, northeastern India — a narrow-range endemic restricted to a small cluster of hill-country waterways. It lives in shallow, swift-flowing streams with gravelly bottoms, holding to clear, well-oxygenated, fast-moving water typical of foothill and highland drainages.
The FishBase record classifies its habitat as tropical and benthopelagic, but the elevation and swift-water setting mean the water itself runs cooler and better-oxygenated than a typical lowland tropical stream. No aquarium-derived temperature or pH range has been recorded for this species; keepers should treat it, cautiously, as a cool-to-moderate, fast, clear-water fish rather than assume warm still conditions.
Feeding
No diet data specific to Schistura kangjupkhulensis were found in the available sources. Based on its build and its close relatives within Schistura, it is presumed to be a micro-predator that forages over gravel and stone substrate for small invertebrates — insect larvae and small crustaceans washed down in fast water — in the manner typical of stone and brook loaches.
Given the total absence of aquarium feeding records, any captive diet recommendation would be speculative; the safest approach for a fish of this build is small live or frozen foods (bloodworm, daphnia, brine shrimp) offered at the substrate, since sinking, meaty foods most closely match what a benthic micro-predator would take in the wild.
Mating
Almost nothing is recorded about courtship or spawning behaviour in this species. The one relevant note from the literature is that a single examined female carried ovaries with ripe ovulae around 0.5 in in diameter — evidence that the species does mature and ripen eggs in the wild, but not a description of an observed spawning event, pairing behaviour, or seasonal trigger.
No sexual dimorphism has been documented beyond the absence of a suborbital flap in males, a feature noted in the species description but not established as a reliable field character. Data on this species is genuinely sparse, and no aquarium sighting of courtship exists to draw on.
Breeding
Schistura kangjupkhulensis has, as far as available sources show, never been bred in the aquarium, and its breeding biology in the wild is essentially unrecorded beyond the single note of a ripe-egg-bearing female. Like other stone and brook loaches, it is presumed to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward — the typical Nemacheilidae pattern, and one that stands in clear contrast to the cave-guarding or mouthbrooding strategies seen in unrelated fish groups.
Given that the species barely enters the aquarium trade and has no recorded aquarium life history, keepers should not expect to breed it; this is a case where the honest answer is that data is sparse and captive reproduction is unproven.
In the aquarium
Schistura kangjupkhulensis has essentially no presence in the aquarium hobby — it is not a species with an established care history, and specific husbandry data could not be found even for closely related Schistura. What can be said comes from the biology of the genus and family: this is a small (around 3 in), scaleless, current-loving stream fish that would need cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water over a gravel substrate, not the warm, still conditions many community tanks default to.
As with all nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin means sensitivity to copper and to full-strength medications, so any treatment should start at reduced dosing. Given its Endangered status and the near-total absence of trade or captive-care records, this is not a species to source from the wild trade even if occasionally offered; there is no farmed supply, and any specimens in circulation would very likely be wild-collected from an already pressured population.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura kangjupkhulensis as Endangered in 2010, under criteria tied to both a small, restricted range and observed or inferred population decline. The species is known only from a few hill streams within the Tizu, Imphal and Nambul river system in Manipur, India, making it acutely vulnerable to localized threats.
The principal pressures identified are destructive fishing practices and habitat alteration from damming and water abstraction — changes that degrade the fast-flowing, gravel-bottomed stream habitat this species depends on. With no evidence of any aquarium trade demand or captive population, its conservation outlook rests entirely on the health of its native Manipur streams.
