Schistura kaysonei, the Laotian cave loach, is a small nemacheilid known only from a single limestone cave system in Khammouane Province, Laos. It is blind and lives roughly 100 metres inside the cave, well beyond the reach of daylight, feeding on organic detritus, bat guano and micro-organisms that wash into the cave stream rather than hunting the aquatic invertebrates typical of surface-dwelling stone loaches. Named for Kaysone Phomvihane, the first prime minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic, it is one of the most narrowly distributed loaches in the world and is essentially absent from the aquarium trade — its extremely restricted range is exactly why it is listed as Vulnerable.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura kaysonei was described by Chavalit Vidthayanon and Chatree Jaruthanin in 2002. It belongs to Schistura, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae, the true stone and brook loaches, and one of the most frequently revised groups in Cobitoidea as older Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus material has been redistributed among Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the valid combination, and it recognises the species in Schistura.

The species epithet honours Kaysone Phomvihane (1920–1992), the first prime minister of the Lao People's Democratic Republic — a naming convention seen in several Lao endemics described around the turn of the millennium. Its trade and common name, the Laotian cave loach, reflects both its type locality and its unusual troglobitic (cave-dwelling) life.

Morphology

Like other members of its genus, Schistura kaysonei has the typical Nemacheilidae body plan: an elongate, cylindrical, near-scaleless body with a ventrally flattened head suited to life pressed against stream substrate, and the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the group. What sets it apart from its surface-dwelling relatives is its adaptation to permanent darkness — it is blind, though unlike some obligate cave fish it retains some body pigmentation rather than being fully depigmented.

Detailed morphometric data (maximum length, fin-ray and scale counts) are not available from the sources consulted here; as with many range-restricted Southeast Asian cave loaches, published data on this species is genuinely sparse, and keepers and researchers alike should treat unsupported size or count claims with caution rather than take them as established fact.

Habitat

This species is endemic to a single cave system in Khammouane Province, Laos, where it has been recorded roughly 100 metres from the cave entrance — far enough in that no daylight reaches the water. It is a strictly freshwater, demersal species of tropical Southeast Asia, living in the stream that runs through the cave rather than in an open river or hillstream habitat.

Cave streams like this one are food-poor relative to surface waters: there is no photosynthesis to drive a food web, so the system depends on organic material carried in from outside — leaf litter, and critically, the droppings of the cave's bat colonies. Deforestation and agricultural runoff in the surrounding karst landscape can alter both the water quality and the quantity of water reaching the cave, which is the principal threat to this narrow habitat.

Feeding

Schistura kaysonei is not the typical benthic micro-predator seen in many of its surface-dwelling Schistura relatives. Instead it feeds on organic detritus, bat guano and micro-organisms — the available food base inside a cave stream that receives no sunlight — and FishBase records it at a trophic level of around 3.0, consistent with a detritivore/omnivore rather than a dedicated invertebrate hunter.

This diet is a direct consequence of its cave environment: with no algae, biofilm or abundant invertebrate prey base of the kind found in open streams, the species has adapted to exploit whatever organic input — largely guano from the cave's bat population and washed-in detritus — sustains the ecosystem it lives in.

Mating

No information on courtship, sexing or spawning behaviour for Schistura kaysonei was found in the sources consulted. This is unsurprising for a fish that lives 100 metres inside a single cave system — reproductive biology has simply not been documented in the field, and the species has no history of aquarium spawning to draw on either. Based on its genus, a typical stone-loach pattern of egg-scattering with no parental care is the reasonable expectation, but this has not been confirmed for this species specifically.

Breeding

There is no documented aquarium breeding for Schistura kaysonei. Nemacheilid stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and there is no reason to expect this species departs from that pattern, but nothing about its own reproduction has actually been recorded or verified.

In practice this is close to a moot point: the species is not established in the aquarium hobby, its extremely narrow range makes wild collection both difficult and ecologically risky, and its cave-adapted biology (blindness, a detritus-based diet, a stable dark, cool cave-stream environment) makes it a poor candidate for captive husbandry in the first place. Anyone encountering this fish should treat breeding as essentially unstudied rather than assume a scattering pattern applies unmodified.

In the aquarium

Loaches Online lists tank parameters for Schistura kaysonei — a well-filtered aquarium with sand substrate and abundant hiding places, water at 70–79 °F, pH 6–7.5, and hardness up to 12 dH, fed on sinking pellets and frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and Daphnia. As with all nemacheilids it is essentially scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, so any treatment should be conservative and closely monitored.

In practice, however, this species should not be treated as a normal aquarium candidate. FishBase explicitly notes it is not recommended for the aquarium trade on conservation grounds, and Loaches Online flags that its extremely limited range makes it genuinely rare in trade. A cave-adapted, blind, detritus-feeding endemic from a single Lao cave system is far better appreciated through its conservation story than kept in a home tank; anyone who does encounter it should assume it is wild-collected from an exceptionally vulnerable population.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura kaysonei as Vulnerable on 25 February 2011. The listed threats are a decline in water quality and quantity driven by deforestation and agriculture in the surrounding catchment, together with the potential for overfishing tied to the aquarium trade — a serious risk for a species confined to a single cave system.

Because the entire known population occupies one cave in Khammouane Province, Laos, there is essentially no buffer against habitat disturbance: changes to water flow, contamination from agricultural runoff, or disruption of the bat colonies that supply its food base could affect the whole species at once. FishBase's recommendation against the aquarium trade for this fish should be read in that light — every wild-collected individual represents a measurable draw on an irreplaceable, single-site population.
