Taxonomy & naming
Schistura khamtanhi was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, part of his long programme of revising the stone loaches of the Mekong basin. It sits in the genus Schistura, within the family Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches, the largest of the loach families and one that has absorbed many species once placed in the broader, now-largely-obsolete genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid fish names, recognises Schistura khamtanhi as a valid species with no synonyms in current use.
The species epithet honours a local collector or contact who assisted with the original fieldwork, a common practice in Kottelat's Mekong-region descriptions of this period. The type locality is a tributary called Houay Pao in Xekong Province, southern Laos, part of the Xe Kong sub-basin that feeds into the Mekong.
Morphology
Schistura khamtanhi is a small, elongate stone loach, reaching only around 2.5 in in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has a slender, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and the near-scaleless skin typical of Nemacheilidae — a feature that matters for medication sensitivity in the aquarium as much as for camouflage in the wild. As in other Schistura, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove beneath the eye, used defensively and as a hazard to careless handling.
In life the species shows eight to ten dark brown bars crossing a paler ground colour along the flank, with red-orange pelvic, anal and caudal fins — a striking combination for a fish this size. Beyond these points, published morphological detail is limited; like many single-basin nemacheilids it has not been the subject of a dedicated anatomical or genetic study since its original description.
Habitat
The species is known from the Xe Kong and Mekong basins of Laos and Cambodia, inhabiting both fast-flowing rocky rapids and adjacent sandy-bottomed stretches of river — a benthopelagic fish that moves between the two habitat types rather than being confined to one. This places it firmly among the clear, well-oxygenated, moderately warm rivers of Indochina rather than still or blackwater habitats.
The most notable habitat fact recorded for Schistura khamtanhi is behavioural: FishBase records it as the only known migratory species in the genus Schistura, passing the Khone Falls — the great cataract on the Mekong at the Laos–Cambodia border — during a January-to-February window. That kind of seasonal movement through a major falls system is unusual for a small stone loach and suggests a life history tied closely to the hydrology of the Mekong mainstem and its tributaries, though the details of what drives the migration have not been documented in the available literature.
Feeding
No species-specific dietary study has been published for Schistura khamtanhi, but its body plan and habitat point clearly to the same ecological role as its Nemacheilidae relatives: a benthic micro-predator picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — from among rocks and sand in fast-flowing water.
In an aquarium setting this diet translates to small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and chopped invertebrate-based mixes, along with sinking pellets or wafers formulated for bottom feeders. As with most stone loaches, flake food that lingers at the surface is likely to be ignored; food needs to reach the bottom where the fish forages.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura khamtanhi specifically. Sexual dimorphism has not been documented for the species, and in the absence of confirmed data it should be treated as unknown rather than assumed absent.
What can be said comes from the pattern seen across Nemacheilidae as a whole: stone and brook loaches typically spawn as egg-scatterers over gravel or among stones in flowing water, without pair bonding or extended courtship display, and reproduction is often linked to seasonal changes in flow and temperature. Whether the species' unusual migration past the Khone Falls is itself a breeding migration is a reasonable inference but not something the record confirms.
Breeding
Schistura khamtanhi is not known to have been bred in the aquarium, and data on its reproduction — even in the wild — is sparse. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: eggs released over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward.
This fits the honest picture across almost the whole of Nemacheilidae: most species, especially narrow-range stream endemics like this one, are simply not part of the hobby breeding record. There is no evidence of captive spawning, hormone-induced or otherwise, for this species, and keepers should not expect to breed it.
In the aquarium
Schistura khamtanhi is not an established aquarium fish, and specific keeping data is not available in the sources consulted here. What can be reasonably drawn from its biology is that, as a small stone loach from fast, clear, well-oxygenated Mekong-basin rivers, it would need a tank that replicates flowing, highly oxygenated water over a mixed rock-and-sand substrate — closer to a hillstream setup than a still community tank — rather than warm, sluggish water.
As with other Nemacheilidae, the near-scaleless skin means any specimens in the trade would be sensitive to copper and to full-strength doses of many medications; half-doses and gentle treatment are the safer approach. Given the tiny adult size (around 2.5 in), a modest but well-filtered, well-oxygenated tank with strong flow and hiding places among rock and gravel would suit it, but this remains inference from its wild habitat rather than documented aquarium practice, since the species does not appear to be established in the hobby.
Conservation
Schistura khamtanhi is listed as Data Deficient on the IUCN Red List, assessed in January 2011. This reflects the genuine scarcity of information about its distribution, population size and trends rather than any indication that the species is secure or in decline — a common and honest outcome for narrow-range Mekong-basin stream fish that have not been the subject of follow-up survey work since their description.
The species is not listed under CITES or the Convention on Migratory Species. Its known range in the Xe Kong and Mekong basins of Laos and Cambodia places it in a region under real and growing pressure from hydropower development, including dams on the Mekong mainstem and its tributaries that can disrupt exactly the kind of seasonal movement recorded for this species at Khone Falls. Without a full assessment, though, the appropriate position is to record what is known and avoid guessing at a threat category.
