Taxonomy & naming
Schistura khugae was described by Vishwanath and Shanta in 2004, part of a wave of new Schistura descriptions from Manipur and the wider Chindwin drainage in the early 2000s. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, encompassing hundreds of small, mostly scaleless species spread across Eurasia. No older genus combination (such as Nemacheilus khugae or Noemacheilus khugae) is confirmed for this species; it appears to have been described directly in Schistura.
The genus name Schistura derives from Greek roots meaning roughly "to divide" and "tail," a reference to the forked caudal fin typical of the genus. The species epithet khugae refers directly to the Khuga River in Manipur, the type locality from which the original specimens were collected. As with many Nemacheilidae, the taxonomy of this group has been reshuffled repeatedly as older catch-all genera like Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split; the Catalog of Fishes remains the authority for the currently valid combination, which keeps this species in Schistura.
Morphology
Schistura khugae is a small loach, reaching a maximum reported length of about 3.5 in total length. Like other members of the genus it has an elongate, cylindrical body suited to holding position in current, a flattened head and underslung mouth for feeding along the streambed, and the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the broader loach lineage — a small defensive spine tucked in a groove below the eye.
