Taxonomy & naming
Schistura kohatensis was described in 1981 by M. R. Mirza and Petru Bănărescu, part of a wave of Nemacheilidae descriptions from Mirza covering the stream loaches of Pakistan and the wider Indian subcontinent. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which was itself only widely separated from the older catch-all "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" concept in the decades since — a great many of the species now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and related genera were originally described under those broader names. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the current combination, and it retains the species in Schistura, the largest genus of true loaches, with well over 200 nominal species spread across South, Southeast and East Asia.
The species epithet kohatensis is geographic, referring to Kohat, a district and city in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa, Pakistan, near where the type specimens were collected. As with many regional Schistura, there has been little taxonomic re-examination since the original description, and it should be treated as a narrowly distributed, poorly studied species rather than a well-resolved one.
Morphology
Schistura kohatensis is tiny even by stone-loach standards, reaching a maximum recorded length of only about 1 in standard length. Like other members of its genus it has the classic Nemacheilidae build: an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to gripping the substrate in current, and a small, subterminal, sucker-like mouth ringed with barbels for probing between stones. Beneath each eye sits an erectile suborbital spine — a small, sharp defensive structure shared across many loach lineages — and the skin carries only minute, deeply embedded scales, leaving the fish functionally naked and, as in all loaches, correspondingly sensitive to harsh water conditions and medication.
Detailed colour pattern and fin-ray counts for this species are not well documented in accessible sources; published material is limited largely to the original taxonomic description and subsequent listing in regional checklists. Given the genus, a barred or blotched grey-brown camouflage pattern typical of Schistura stream loaches is likely, but this should be treated as an inference from its relatives rather than a confirmed trait of kohatensis itself.
Habitat
Schistura kohatensis is endemic to Pakistan, known from streams associated with the Kohat region of Khyber Pakhtunkhwa. As a benthopelagic freshwater fish in a genus built for fast water, it is expected to live in cool-to-warm, clear, well-oxygenated hill streams with a stony or gravel bed — the standard Nemacheilidae setting across the foothills and plains of the Indian subcontinent — though a full description of its specific stream conditions (flow, substrate, elevation) is not available in the sources consulted here.
Its range appears to be narrow, consistent with a great many Schistura species that are known from only one or a handful of watercourses. That narrowness is also the basis of its conservation concern: a species tied to a small number of streams in a single country has little buffer if any one of those streams degrades.
Feeding
Schistura, like most Nemacheilidae, are benthic micro-predators and omnivores, picking small insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and other invertebrates — along with some zooplankton and organic detritus — from among stones and gravel in flowing water. There is no species-specific dietary study for Schistura kohatensis, but this generalist invertebrate-grazing pattern is well established across the genus and is the safest basis for care.
In practical terms this means a diet of small live or frozen foods (bloodworm, brine shrimp, chopped invertebrates) and sinking foods that reach the bottom quickly; like other loaches, it is not well suited to competing for food at the surface or in the water column, and flake left to drift is likely to go untouched.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura kohatensis specifically. Across Nemacheilidae generally, external sexual dimorphism is often subtle to absent outside of the breeding season, when females of many stone-loach species swell visibly with eggs; there is no confirmed information on sex differences in this species to report.
Given the family pattern, reproduction in the wild is presumed to follow the stream-loach template: spawning triggered by seasonal rises in flow and temperature, with no pair bond or nest. This should be read as an inference from the genus rather than a documented fact for kohatensis.
Breeding
Schistura kohatensis is not known to have been bred in captivity, and — like the great majority of Nemacheilidae stone and brook loaches — it is not established in the aquarium trade at all. The general breeding pattern for the genus is egg-scattering over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of the eggs or fry once released.
Data for this species is sparse to the point that even that pattern should be treated as inferred rather than confirmed. There is no record of a home aquarium spawning, and given its narrow endemic range and lack of trade presence, none should be expected.
In the aquarium
Schistura kohatensis has essentially no footprint in the aquarium hobby; it is not a traded species, and there are no established husbandry accounts to draw on. Any care information here is therefore extrapolated from the genus rather than the species itself, and should be treated with appropriate caution.
Were it ever kept, the general Nemacheilidae template would apply: a tank with strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, a stony or gravel substrate, and clean, cool-to-moderate temperatures rather than warm still water. As a small, scaleless loach it would be expected to be sensitive to copper-based and full-strength medications, in line with loaches generally, and — as with most small stream loaches — would do best in a group rather than alone. None of this is a substitute for real observation of the species, which does not currently exist in accessible literature.
Conservation
Schistura kohatensis is assessed as Vulnerable on the IUCN Red List (assessed 27 February 2020, under criteria A2c+3c), reflecting an inferred or projected population decline linked to habitat degradation within its narrow Pakistani range. As with many single-country stream endemics, the pressures are the general ones affecting freshwater habitats in the region — water abstraction, pollution and modification of stream courses — rather than any pressure from the aquarium trade, which does not appear to involve this species.
Because it is known only from a limited area around Kohat, its status is closely tied to the condition of a small number of streams; there is no wild-collection trade to speak of, and no farmed or captive supply, so its conservation trajectory depends entirely on the health of its native habitat in Pakistan.
