Taxonomy & naming
Schistura kongphengi was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1998, and it has stood in the genus Schistura ever since — no older combination under Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus turns up in taxonomic databases for this species. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of loaches and one that has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; Schistura is the family's largest genus, with hundreds of described species across Asia.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the governing authority for the valid name, and both FishBase and GBIF list Schistura kongphengi Kottelat, 1998 as the accepted combination. As with many recently described, geographically narrow Schistura, published information on this species is limited to survey and taxonomic literature rather than the kind of popular coverage larger loaches receive.
Morphology
Schistura kongphengi is a small, elongate loach, reported to reach around 3.5 in standard length. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it has a slender, rounded-to-compressed body suited to holding position against current, a subterminal mouth for picking food from the streambed, and the family's characteristic near-scaleless or fine-scaled skin, which leaves it — as with loaches generally — more sensitive than scaled fish to copper and to full-strength medications.
Schistura species typically carry a small erectile spine beneath the eye, a feature shared across much of the wider loach lineage, though it is far less prominent than the stout suborbital spine of the botiid loaches. Detailed morphological description beyond FishBase's size record is not available from the cached sources; this is a genuinely data-sparse species outside the primary taxonomic literature.
Habitat
The species is known from the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai drainages, tributary systems of the Mekong basin in Laos. FishBase describes it as benthopelagic in tropical fresh water, living in fast-flowing streams over stones and boulders — classic habitat for a stone loach, where current keeps the water well oxygenated and the bed is dominated by hard, current-scoured substrate rather than sand or silt.
This is a running-water fish through and through, not a still-water or blackwater species. Its narrow known range, tied to two river drainages in central Laos, is typical of many Schistura, a genus in which large numbers of species are documented from only one or a few river systems.
Feeding
Detailed dietary data for Schistura kongphengi was not found in the available sources. Stone loaches in general, including Schistura, are bottom-foraging micro-predators, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, worms and small crustaceans — from among stones and gravel in fast water, and this species can reasonably be expected to feed the same way, though the point is not directly confirmed for this species.

A tank built for it would need to replicate fast, clear, well-oxygenated water over a stony substrate — strong flow from a powerhead or spray bar, high dissolved oxygen, and rounded gravel or cobble rather than sand or a soft, still-water setup.
Being near-scaleless like other loaches, it should be treated cautiously with medications — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses are best avoided or halved. Given how little is documented about this specific species, anyone keeping it should treat published husbandry as provisional and prioritise water quality and current over guesswork on more specific parameters.
Conservation
The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura kongphengi as Least Concern, per an assessment recorded via FishBase dated 2011, with a low fishing-vulnerability score. It is known only from the Nam Theun and Xe Bangfai drainages of the Mekong basin in Laos — a narrow range that, despite the current Least Concern rating, leaves the species exposed to any degradation of those specific tributary systems, including the hydropower development that has affected parts of the Nam Theun watershed.
