Taxonomy & naming
Schistura kontumensis was described by Jörg Freyhof and Nikolai Serov in 2001, with the holotype (ZFMK 26687) deposited at the Zoologisches Forschungsmuseum Alexander Koenig in Bonn. It belongs to the order Cypriniformes and the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which the Catalog of Fishes recognizes as the largest of the loach families and one of the largest freshwater fish families overall — the result of a wave of splitting the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus into Schistura, Barbatula, Triplophysa, Oxynoemacheilus and others over the past few decades.
The species epithet points directly to its origin: kontumensis, "of Kontum," names Kontum Province in the Central Highlands of Vietnam, where the type specimens were collected. As with many Schistura described from single river systems in the last 25 years, no subsequent taxonomic revision affecting this species is documented in the sources consulted here; it stands as originally described.
Morphology
Schistura kontumensis is a small fish, reported to reach about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely of small stream loaches. Like other members of Schistura it has the classic stone-loach build: an elongate, cylindrical body tapering toward a narrow caudal peduncle, a flattened underside suited to hugging the streambed, and paired barbels around the mouth for probing the substrate.
As in its relatives, the skin is effectively naked to close inspection — the scales are tiny and deeply embedded — and it carries the small, erectile suborbital spine tucked in a groove below the eye that gives the true loaches their defensive edge and their old family name. Detailed morphometric and colour-pattern data beyond the original description were not available in the sources used for this article, so finer points of pattern and proportion are left undescribed here rather than guessed at.
Habitat
This species is known from the Sesan River system in Kontum Province, Central Vietnam — a tributary that flows into the Sekong and from there into the Mekong, placing the species within the broader Mekong basin. It has been recorded from large rivers and their headwater streams in this drainage, consistent with the general Schistura pattern of clear, flowing, well-oxygenated water over stone, gravel and sand.
Notably, the species is described as reportedly common and hardy where it occurs, and able to tolerate degraded, polluted urban water — an unusual resilience for a stream-endemic Nemacheilid, many of which are narrow specialists restricted to pristine flow. That tolerance does not extend to a documented preference for still or degraded habitat as typical; rather it appears to be a robust generalist within its native flowing-water range.
Feeding
No diet-specific data for Schistura kontumensis were found in the sources consulted. Consistent with the genus as a whole, it is reasonable to describe it as a bottom-dwelling micro-predator, foraging over stream substrate for small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans, in the manner typical of Schistura and other Nemacheilidae in fast, clear water.

In the aquarium
Schistura kontumensis is not established in the aquarium trade, and no husbandry record for it was found in the sources used here. Anyone attempting to keep it should extrapolate cautiously from the genus: Schistura species generally want cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a stony or gravel substrate, since they are stream-bed specialists rather than still-water fish. Given its reported tolerance of degraded urban water in the wild, it may prove more adaptable than many of its narrow-range relatives, but this should not be read as license to keep it in warm, stagnant conditions.
As with all true loaches, the skin is thin and the scales are minute, so this fish should be presumed sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally; any dosing should start conservative.
