Taxonomy & naming
Schistura kottelati was described in 2018 by Ho, Hoang and Ngo, based on a holotype and paratypes collected from the Hung Dang Valley within Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, Quảng Bình Province, central Vietnam. The species name honours Maurice Kottelat, the ichthyologist whose decades of work on Southeast Asian freshwater fishes — including a great deal of the taxonomic groundwork on Schistura itself — underpins much of what is known about this genus.
It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the largest family of loaches and one that has been extensively reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; many species now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa and related genera were once lumped under those older names. The Catalog of Fishes is the governing authority for the current combination, Schistura kottelati, and that is the valid name used here.
Morphology
As a member of Schistura, this is a slender, elongate, near-scaleless loach built for gripping the substrate in current rather than swimming in open water. The type series ranges from about 1–1.5 in standard length, with the holotype measuring 1.5 in SL — a genuinely small fish even by stone-loach standards. The original description separates it from its close relatives on details of lateral-line development, body pigmentation pattern, fin-ray counts and barbel structure, the kind of fine anatomical differences typical of Schistura taxonomy.
Like other members of the genus it likely carries the small, erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the group, tucked in a groove below the eye and flicked out when the fish is handled or threatened. The skin is essentially naked, with tiny embedded scales rather than the overlapping scales of most fishes — a trait shared across nemacheilids that has direct consequences for how the species should be medicated in captivity.
Habitat
Schistura kottelati is known only from its type locality: a limestone stream in the Hung Dang Valley, within Xuân Trạch commune, Bố Trạch district, inside Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park. This is karst country in central Vietnam — a landscape of limestone caves and clear, fast-flowing streams draining forested hills, protected within one of Vietnam's premier national parks.
No published survey data describe the stream's temperature, pH or seasonal flow in detail, but the habitat fits the pattern typical of Schistura generally: cool-to-moderate, clear, well-oxygenated, fast-flowing water over rock and gravel, rather than warm, still or blackwater conditions. Given that the species is currently known from a single stream, its habitat requirements should be treated as narrow and specific until more localities or field data come to light.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for Schistura kottelati specifically, but the genus is well characterised as benthic micro-predators. Related Schistura species forage over cobbles and gravel in fast water for small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and other stream invertebrates — rather than filtering plankton or grazing algae in any quantity.
In the absence of species-specific data, this is the safest working picture for feeding: a bottom-hunting micro-predator that would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, Daphnia and brine shrimp readily, and sinking foods generally over flake, which it may largely ignore.
Mating
There is no published information on courtship, sexual dimorphism or spawning behaviour for Schistura kottelati. The original description is a taxonomic paper focused on distinguishing the species from its relatives by morphology, not a natural-history account, and no aquarium or field breeding observations appear to have been recorded since.
Across Schistura and the wider Nemacheilidae, egg-scattering in fast water is the norm, with no nest-building, cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour recorded in the family. Until species-specific data exist, that general pattern is the best inference for this species, but it should be understood as inference from the genus rather than a documented account of this fish.
Breeding
Schistura kottelati has not been bred in captivity as far as published records show, and this is unsurprising: as a narrow-range stream endemic described only in 2018, it is not established in the aquarium trade at all. Stone and brook loaches in general are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast water with no parental care, and they are rarely bred in home aquaria even where the species is well known in the hobby.
Given the complete absence of aquarium or field breeding records for this species, the honest summary is that its breeding biology is unstudied. Any keeper attempting to work with this fish should expect no established protocol to draw on.
In the aquarium
Schistura kottelati is not a species with an established aquarium history — it is a very recently described, single-locality endemic, and this profile should be read as inference from the wider genus rather than field-tested advice for this fish specifically. If it were to be kept, the genus-level expectations for stone and brook loaches would apply: cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated water; a substrate of smooth gravel and cobbles offering current breaks and hiding places; and a diet of small sinking live or frozen foods.
Two genus-wide cautions matter regardless of species identity. First, like most nemacheilids this fish is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally — half-doses and gentle products are the safer default with any Schistura. Second, stone loaches are often among the first fish in a tank to show signs of ich, so close observation and cautious, prompt treatment matter. Given how little is documented about this particular species, anyone considering it should treat it as an advanced, data-sparse fish rather than a beginner loach.
Conservation
Schistura kottelati has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List; its status here is recorded honestly as Not Evaluated rather than guessed. It is known only from a single limestone stream within Phong Nha-Kẻ Bàng National Park, a UNESCO World Heritage Site and one of Vietnam's most strictly protected areas, which offers the species a measure of habitat protection that many stream endemics elsewhere in the region lack.
Even so, a single-locality endemic known from one description is inherently vulnerable to any localised disturbance — changes in water quality, sedimentation or hydrology within that one stream could affect the entire known population. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; it does not appear to be established in the hobby. The larger conservation point is simply that its status is unknown and worth flagging as a priority for future field assessment rather than assuming safety from its protected-park location alone.
