Taxonomy & naming
Schistura lingyunensis was described in 1997 by Liao, Wang & Luo from Guancang village in Lingyun County, Guangxi, China, with type specimens deposited at the Institute of Hydrobiology (Chinese Academy of Sciences) and Zunyi Medical College. It was placed in Schistura, the largest genus of the stone-and-brook-loach family Nemacheilidae, a group that has absorbed many species once scattered across the old, broad genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus.
Subsequent molecular work on China's cave-loach fauna has argued for moving this species out of Schistura into Troglonectes, a genus erected for obligate cave-dwelling nemacheilids with troglomorphic adaptations, and it has also been referenced briefly under Triplophysa during that taxonomic back-and-forth. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently accepted combination and should be checked for the latest position; this profile follows the original genus, Schistura, as given in its description. Whatever the generic home, the species sits within Nemacheilidae, the diverse family of small, benthic loaches that includes some of the most habitat-specialized fish in the order.
Morphology
Schistura lingyunensis shows the classic suite of troglomorphic features seen in obligate cave fish worldwide: it is scaleless, its body is depigmented (lacking the banded or mottled colour pattern typical of surface-dwelling Schistura), and its eyes are degenerate, reduced from the normal condition seen in sighted relatives. These are convergent adaptations to permanent darkness, where colour patterns and functional vision offer no benefit and pigment and eye tissue are metabolically costly to maintain.
Like other members of the family it is a small, elongate, bottom-oriented fish built for moving over rock and sediment rather than through open water. Detailed measurements and meristic counts beyond the original description are not captured in the sources consulted here, and much of its fine morphology remains a specialist, literature-only subject rather than something documented for a general audience.
Habitat
This species is known only from its type locality, Shadong Cave, in Lingyun County, Guangxi, in the upper Pearl River (Zhujiang) basin of southern China — a single, wholly subterranean water body. It is a true troglobite, an obligate cave-dweller that completes its entire life cycle in permanent darkness, in contrast to the great majority of Schistura, which live in clear, fast, oxygen-rich surface streams.
Shadong Cave is notable for hosting one of only two known triple-cave-fish assemblages recorded anywhere: this loach shares the cave with two Sinocyclocheilus cavefish species, alongside troglomorphic invertebrates including a blind cave shrimp, Macrobrachium lingyunense. Cave streams of this kind are typically cool, clear, mineral-rich and food-poor relative to surface waters, with life supported indirectly by organic matter washed in or carried by bats and other cave visitors rather than by photosynthesis.
Feeding
No detailed dietary study of Schistura lingyunensis is available in the sources consulted for this profile. Cave streams offer none of the algae or sunlit biofilm that surface loaches graze, so cave-adapted nemacheilids and their cavefish neighbours are generally assumed to rely on small invertebrates, detritus and organic matter washed into the cave system, in a food web ultimately subsidised from outside the cave rather than produced within it.
As with much of this species' biology, feeding ecology is a gap in the published record rather than something confidently known — a case where honesty about the limits of current data matters more than a plausible-sounding guess.
Mating
No description of courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism has been documented for this species in the available literature. Most surface-dwelling stone and brook loaches are egg-scatterers with no courtship display beyond release of eggs over gravel in flowing water, but whether the same holds for a cave-restricted species living in a very different physical environment is not established here.
Breeding
Schistura lingyunensis has never been kept or bred in the aquarium hobby, and no observations of its reproductive biology in the wild are recorded in the sources reviewed for this article. Its relatives in Nemacheilidae are, in general, egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast water with no parental care, and are themselves rarely bred even in captivity; the same broad pattern is the best inference available for this species, but it should be read as an inference from its family, not a documented fact about this fish.

This species is not, and realistically never will be, an aquarium fish. It is restricted to a single known cave system, has no history in the ornamental trade, and its physiology — adapted to constant darkness, stable cool cave-water conditions and a food-poor environment — makes it entirely unsuited to captive husbandry outside a dedicated research setting. There is no aquarium-care information to offer for this species, and none should be invented; its value is scientific and conservation-related rather than as a keepable fish.
Conservation
Schistura lingyunensis has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is recorded here as Not Evaluated. It is known from a single cave locality in Lingyun County, Guangxi, China, which by definition makes it an extremely narrow-range endemic: any disturbance to Shadong Cave's water quality, hydrology or the karst catchment that feeds it — pollution, groundwater extraction, cave tourism or habitat disturbance — would place its entire known population at risk, as is true for the co-occurring Sinocyclocheilus cavefish and cave shrimp with which it shares the system.
There is no aquarium trade in this species and no evidence of collection pressure; its conservation concerns are purely habitat-based. Given how little is documented about it, a formal IUCN assessment — and continued monitoring of Shadong Cave's small, unique fish and invertebrate assemblage — would be valuable.
