Taxonomy & naming
Schistura liyaiensis was described in 2014 by Lokeshwor and Vishwanath in the journal Ichthyological Research, based on specimens collected from the upper reaches of the Barak River near Liyai village in Senapati District, Manipur, India — the type locality that gives the species its epithet. It belongs to the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, which is by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea and includes hundreds of small, often narrowly endemic stream species across South, Southeast and East Asia.
The describers distinguished it from its congeners by a combination of colour pattern and fin-ray counts: 7 to 9 brown saddles across the back forming 7 to 8 broad bars down the flanks, an incomplete lateral line, 4 simple plus roughly 8.5 branched dorsal-fin rays, a dark spot at the origin of the dorsal fin, and a black bar at the base of the tail. As with much of the genus, the Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and Schistura liyaiensis has not been placed in synonymy or moved to another genus since its description.
Morphology
This is a genuinely small fish, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length — near the lower end even for a genus of small loaches. The body shows the classic Schistura pattern of 7 to 9 dark brown saddles across the back resolving into 7 to 8 broad bars along the sides, a dark spot at the base of the dorsal fin, and a black bar across the base of the caudal fin. The lateral line is incomplete, a detail used in its original diagnosis and typical of many stream-dwelling nemacheilids.
Like other true loaches it carries an erectile suborbital spine, a small defensive spine housed in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out when the fish is threatened or handled — a feature worth remembering at netting time. The skin is effectively naked, covered only in minute, deeply embedded scales, which makes Schistura liyaiensis and its relatives sensitive to copper and to full-strength medications, a point that matters far more in captive care than in the wild.
Habitat
Schistura liyaiensis is known only from the upper Barak River system at Liyai village in Manipur's Senapati District, in the far northeast of India, close to the Indo-Myanmar border hills. The type locality is described as swift-flowing water running over large boulders and rocks — classic fast, clear, well-oxygenated stream habitat, the kind of high-energy reach that defines life for most Schistura species. It shares this water with other regional stream fishes including species of Barilius, Devario, Pethia, Garra and the hillstream catfish Glyptothorax manipurensis.
No temperature or pH readings were reported for the type locality, and none appear to be documented elsewhere for this species — a genuine data gap rather than an oversight on our part. What can be said with confidence, given the habitat description and the ecology of the genus generally, is that this is a cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, highly oxygenated freshwater stream fish, not a warm, still or blackwater species.
Feeding
FishBase records a trophic level around 3.0, consistent with a small carnivore feeding low on the food web — the typical Schistura pattern of picking small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey items from among rocks and gravel in fast water. No detailed dietary study has been published for this species specifically.
In the absence of aquarium data, the safest guide is the genus and family norm: a benthic micro-predator that would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, along with sinking prepared foods, while showing little interest in flake left to drift at the surface.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Schistura liyaiensis. The original description is a taxonomic diagnosis, not a natural-history account, and no follow-up study appears to exist. Reliable claims about pairing behaviour or sex differences cannot honestly be made for this species.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura liyaiensis being spawned in captivity, and no detailed account of its reproduction in the wild. Based on what is known for the genus and family, stone and brook loaches of this kind are egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel and among stones in flowing water, with no parental care given afterward — the fish simply broadcasts its eggs into the current and takes no further part.
This species has essentially no presence in the aquarium trade, and like the great majority of Schistura it should be assumed unbred in captivity until a documented spawning is reported. Any keeper attempting to work with it should expect a rare, unstudied fish rather than a species with an established captive-breeding protocol.
In the aquarium
Schistura liyaiensis is not established in the hobby — it does not appear in the major care-profile databases, and there is no evidence of regular import or captive husbandry. Anyone who does encounter it should treat it as a small (around 1.5 in), fast-water stream specialist: strong current, high dissolved oxygen, a substrate of rounded gravel and rock, and cool-to-moderate rather than tropical-warm temperatures would all be reasonable starting points drawn from its habitat and from the wider genus, pending any species-specific data.
As with other nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin means caution with copper-based and full-strength medications is warranted. Given how little is documented, this is a fish for a specialist keeper prepared to work from general Schistura care principles rather than a proven species template.
Conservation
Schistura liyaiensis has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation status. As a species known only from a single river system in Manipur, and described only in 2014, it fits the broader pattern among Nemacheilidae of narrowly endemic stream fishes that have simply never been assessed rather than confirmed to be secure.
No information is available on population trends, harvest, or trade pressure for this species. Given its restricted known range in the upper Barak River, it would be prudent to treat it as potentially vulnerable to the general threats facing small Himalayan-foothill streams — siltation, damming and water-quality degradation — even though no formal assessment yet exists to confirm or quantify that risk.
