Schistura macrocephalus is a small stone loach known only from a handful of stony, fast-flowing tributaries of the Mekong basin on the Laos–China border. It was described by Maurice Kottelat in 2000 as part of a sweeping revision of Lao fishes, and it has stayed obscure ever since — no common name has taken hold, and it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade. Like other members of the huge genus Schistura, it is a bold little bottom-hugger of cool, clear, oxygen-rich riffles, built to hold position against current and pick invertebrates off stone and gravel. Data on its biology remain sparse, and the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient — an honest reflection of how little has been studied about a fish confined to a small stretch of upland stream.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura macrocephalus was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, in a single sweeping paper — "Diagnoses of a new genus and 64 new species of fishes from Laos," published in the Journal of South Asian Natural History — that reshaped the known loach fauna of the country. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest of the loach families and one still being actively split and revised as new material comes to light.

The genus Schistura is itself the product of decades of taxonomic churn: many species once lumped into the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus have since been redistributed among Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and others as the group has been better resolved. Schistura macrocephalus has kept its original combination since description, and the Catalog of Fishes — the standing authority for valid fish names — confirms it as valid under Kottelat's original genus and epithet. GBIF's taxonomic backbone likewise lists the accepted name as Schistura macrocephalus Kottelat, 2000.

Morphology

Schistura macrocephalus is a small nemacheilid loach, reaching a documented maximum of around 3.5 in standard length — modest even by the standards of this family of slender, elongate bottom-dwellers. As in other Schistura, the body is long and low, the head somewhat flattened, and the mouth set low and slightly subterminal, an arrangement built for grazing and picking prey from stone surfaces rather than for feeding in open water.

Like its relatives it carries the diagnostic nemacheilid feature of a small, forked or notched suborbital flap below the eye in males of many species, though the erectile defensive spine of the botiid loaches (Chromobotia, Yasuhikotakia and kin) is not part of this family's toolkit — Schistura species instead rely on their flattened, streamlined shape and strong pectoral and pelvic fins to hug the substrate in fast water. The skin is thin and the scaling reduced, as in loaches generally, leaving the fish sensitive to poor water quality and heavy-handed medication. Detailed pattern and fin-ray counts for this species come from Kottelat's original description; beyond the confirmed maximum size, published morphological detail is limited.

Habitat

The species is known from a small area straddling the Laos–China border: the Nam Youan basin in Laos and the Mengla River in southern Yunnan, China, both of which drain into the Mekong system. This places it among the many narrow-range stream endemics that make up the bulk of the Schistura radiation across mainland Southeast Asia.

Within that range it lives in riffles over stony and gravel beds, in streams with moderate to fast current — the classic stone-loach habitat of clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated upland water rather than the warm, still, tannin-stained blackwater favoured by many other aquarium fish. Because the known range is so restricted and field surveys of small Mekong tributaries are patchy, there is no detailed picture of seasonal habitat use, and it would be guessing to describe migratory or breeding-season habitat shifts beyond noting that, as in related species, spawning is likely tied to flow and gravel substrate in the same riffle habitat it occupies generally.

Feeding

Schistura macrocephalus is presumed to be a benthic micro-predator in the pattern typical of the genus: picking small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — from the surfaces of stones and gravel in fast-flowing water. This is the standard feeding mode documented across well-studied Schistura species and is consistent with the fish's low, flattened head and subterminal mouth, though no dedicated dietary study of this particular species has been located.

In an aquarium setting, a fish built this way would be expected to take small sinking live and frozen foods — bloodworm, brine shrimp, small chopped invertebrates — readily, while largely ignoring floating flake, in keeping with its bottom-oriented, current-adapted lifestyle.

Mating

No published account of courtship, pairing behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Schistura macrocephalus has been located, and this is genuinely unstudied ground rather than an area where a confident summary can be given. Across the wider genus, reproduction is generally understood to follow the seasonal-flow pattern typical of stone loaches — ripening and spawning cued to the rains and rising water of the wet season — but nothing specific to this species has been documented.

Given the very limited literature on this narrow-range stream endemic, the honest statement is that its mating behaviour, timing and any external differences between the sexes remain unrecorded.

Breeding

As with most Nemacheilidae, Schistura macrocephalus is presumed to be an egg-scatterer, releasing eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care afterward — the standard reproductive mode for stone and brook loaches generally. No aquarium spawning of this species has been documented, and it is not established in the hobby to begin with.

This is a species where the honest answer is that breeding data are simply absent: it is not kept or bred by aquarists, and no field study of its reproductive biology has been published. Anyone encountering claims of tank-bred stock for this species should treat them with real skepticism.

In the aquarium

Schistura macrocephalus is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear to be collected or traded to any meaningful extent, and there is no body of hobbyist care experience to draw on. What can be said follows from its biology and that of its close relatives: at a modest maximum size of roughly 3.5 in, it would need clear, cool-to-moderate, strongly oxygenated water with good current and a stony or gravel substrate to feel at home, along the lines set up for other riffle-dwelling Schistura and hillstream loaches.

As a thin-skinned, lightly scaled loach it would be expected to share the family's sensitivity to copper-based treatments and full-strength medications, and to be an early indicator of deteriorating water quality. In the absence of any real trade presence, the responsible position is simply that this is a scientifically documented stream fish rather than an aquarium species, and it should not be assumed available or straightforward to keep.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assesses Schistura macrocephalus as Data Deficient, an assessment recorded via FishBase as dated 8 July 2011. Data Deficient means there is not enough information to judge extinction risk one way or the other — it is neither a clean bill of health nor a warning, just an honest acknowledgement that too little is known about the population, range extent and threats facing this narrow-range stream fish.

With a known distribution limited to the Nam Youan basin in Laos and the Mengla River in Yunnan, China — both small tributaries of the greater Mekong system — the species sits in the broad category of Southeast Asian upland stream endemics that are vulnerable in principle to damming, deforestation, agricultural runoff and other watershed disturbance, even without a specific documented decline. There is no evidence of an aquarium-trade collection pressure on this species; its conservation picture, such as it is, is a habitat question for its home streams rather than a trade question.
