Taxonomy & naming
Schistura macrolepis was described by M. R. Mirza and Petru Bănărescu in 1981, published in their review of loaches from Pakistan in Bijdragen tot de Dierkunde (volume 51, issue 1, pages 105–130). It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone loaches, within the genus Schistura — by far the largest genus in that family, with close to 190 described species spread across southern, southeastern and eastern Asia.
Nemacheilid taxonomy has been reshuffled substantially over the past few decades, with many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus later redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera as the group was revised. The Catalog of Fishes remains the governing authority for the currently valid combination, and it is treated here as Schistura macrolepis, consistent with the original 1981 description.
Morphology
As a member of Schistura, this is a small, elongate, cylindrical loach typical of the stone and brook loach build — a streamlined body suited to holding position against current, a flattened underside, and a subterminal mouth with barbels for feeling out food on the streambed. Like other nemacheilids it lacks the true scales and armour of many other fish groups; its skin is functionally naked or covered in tiny, deeply embedded scales, which matters for how sensitive it is to disease and to medication.
Many Schistura species carry a small, erectile suborbital spine below the eye, a feature shared across the stone-loach and botiid lineages, though its exact expression varies species to species.
