Schistura madhavai is a small stone loach known only from a single stream near Suriyakanda in the central highlands of Sri Lanka, at roughly 1,000 metres elevation. Described in 2017, it is one of the newest additions to the genus and one of the least known — a narrow-range endemic of a small, tea-plantation stream, holding on in a habitat with almost nowhere else to go. It carries the small, bold, benthic build typical of the family Nemacheilidae, marked with eight or nine dark postdorsal bars, and it has never entered the aquarium hobby in any documented way. It is listed as Critically Endangered.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura madhavai was described in 2017 by Kalana Sudasinghe in Zootaxa, on the basis of specimens from Suriyakanda, Sri Lanka. It belongs to the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, and a group whose species-level taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split. Schistura, as currently circumscribed, is one of the family's biggest genera, spread across South, Southeast and East Asia.

Genetic work in the original description separated S. madhavai from its closest known relative, S. notostigma, by a 3.0-3.8% sequence divergence in the 16S rRNA gene — a meaningful split for a genus where many species are told apart by fine details of banding and fin-ray counts as much as by DNA. The species name honours Professor Madhava Meegaskumbura, a Sri Lankan taxonomist recognised for his work on the island's vertebrate fauna. The Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, recognises Schistura madhavai as a valid, currently accepted species.

Morphology

Schistura madhavai is a small fish, reaching only about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely of small, slender-bodied stream specialists. Like other members of Nemacheilidae, it has an elongated, cylindrical body suited to holding position against current, and skin that is effectively naked to a near-scaleless degree, a trait shared broadly across true loaches and one that matters for how sensitive these fish are to medication.

The species is distinguished from close relatives by its colour pattern: eight to nine wide brown bars crossing the body behind the dorsal fin, separated by narrow white interspaces, plus a distinct black bar across the base of the caudal fin. Its lateral line is incomplete, ending beneath the base of the dorsal fin rather than running the full length of the body, and it lacks the small fleshy lobe at the base of the pelvic fin (an axillary pelvic lobe) that some congeners carry. As in many Schistura, an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove below the eye — a defensive structure typical of the wider loach group, though in a fish this size it is a modest one.

Habitat

The species is known only from its type locality at Suriyakanda in Sri Lanka's central highlands, where it inhabits a small stream only about two metres wide running through tea plantation country at roughly 1,000 metres elevation. The streambed there is pebble and gravel, the classic substrate of a clear, fast-flowing highland stream rather than the sand or silt of lowland, slow-water habitats.

No dedicated water-chemistry data for this stream has been recorded in the sources available, but Sri Lanka's central highland streams in general run cool to moderately warm, clear and well-oxygenated, with strong flow over rock and gravel. A closely related congener, S. notostigma, is documented from similar tropical mountain streams elsewhere on the island, reinforcing the picture of a fast, clean, highland-stream specialist rather than a still-water or lowland fish. Because S. madhavai is known from a single small stream, its entire range likely covers only a few kilometres of watercourse.

Feeding

No feeding study has been published specifically for Schistura madhavai, and the species should be considered data-sparse on this point. Its closest documented relative, S. notostigma, has been shown to feed opportunistically on small invertebrates along the bottom of Sri Lankan mountain streams — a pattern typical of the genus and of Nemacheilidae generally, whose members are bold benthic micro-predators picking insect larvae and other small invertebrates from gravel and biofilm.

It is reasonable to infer that S. madhavai forages the same way in its native stream, working pebble and gravel for aquatic insect larvae and other small invertebrate prey, though this has not been directly confirmed. As the species has no documented aquarium history, there is no first-hand feeding record from captivity to draw on.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour for Schistura madhavai. No sexual dimorphism is described for the species in the available sources, and given how recently it was described — and that it is known from a single small stream with no aquarium or extensive field-study history — this should be treated as an open question rather than filled in by inference from more widely studied genera.

Breeding

There is no record of Schistura madhavai being bred, or even observed spawning, in the wild or in captivity. Data on its reproduction is essentially absent. Based on the general pattern for stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae), which typically scatter eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care, S. madhavai most likely follows the same mode — but this is an inference from its family, not a documented observation for this species.

The species has no known history in the aquarium trade, so there is no captive-breeding record to report. As with most Nemacheilidae, home spawning — if it were ever attempted — would be a rare and unverified event rather than an established practice.

In the aquarium

Schistura madhavai has no documented presence in the aquarium hobby. It has not been reported in the trade, and given its status as a narrow-range endemic of a single small stream in Sri Lanka, collection for the ornamental trade would carry serious conservation concerns for a Critically Endangered species already confined to one location.

Were it ever kept, the general care profile for a small Schistura stone loach would apply: cool-to-moderate, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a gravel substrate, since this is a fish evolved for highland stream conditions rather than still or warm lowland water. Like other nemacheilids it is likely near-scaleless and correspondingly sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments, a point worth flagging even in the absence of direct aquarium experience with this particular species. In practice, this is a species best left undisturbed in its native stream rather than targeted for the trade.

Conservation

Schistura madhavai is listed by the IUCN as Critically Endangered, assessed in 2019 under criterion B1ab(iii) — reflecting an extremely restricted range (an extent of occurrence below the CR threshold) combined with continuing decline in the quality of its habitat. The species is known only from its type locality, the small stream at Suriyakanda, giving it essentially no buffer against habitat disturbance.

The stream runs through tea plantation country, and agricultural land use of this kind typically brings pressures such as runoff, siltation, water abstraction and reduced streamside vegetation — all threats consistent with the "continuing decline in habitat quality" language of its assessment, though the sources here do not detail site-specific threats beyond the land-use context. With no aquarium trade demand recorded and no second known population, the species' survival depends entirely on the condition of this one small highland stream.
