Schistura megalodon is a small stone loach known only from a single montane stream in Yunnan, China, described as recently as 2014 and essentially unseen in the aquarium hobby. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family, the clear-running "stone" or "brook" loaches that spend their lives hugging the gravel of cool, fast, oxygen-rich water. The species is named for the unusually large tooth-like processes (processus dentiformes) in its upper jaw, a feature so pronounced the describer likened it to the megatoothed shark Megalodon. Data on this fish are genuinely sparse — it is known from a handful of specimens from one river — and that scarcity, not marketing, is the honest headline of its story.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura megalodon was formally described by Arne Endruweit in 2014 in the journal Zoological Research (vol. 35, issue 5, pp. 353-361), based on specimens collected during fieldwork in southwestern China. It sits in the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species spread across Asia. Nemacheilidae has been heavily reshuffled by taxonomists over the past few decades, with many species once lumped into a broad "Nemacheilus" or "Noemacheilus" now split among Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera; S. megalodon was described directly into Schistura and has not been affected by that churn.

The species epithet megalodon draws on Greek megas (great) and odon (tooth), a direct reference to its most distinctive anatomical feature: unusually large, tooth-like bony processes (processus dentiformes) in the upper jaw, larger and more pronounced than in related Schistura. As a species described only in 2014 from a small series of specimens, it remains a recently-recognized, poorly-known member of an already under-documented genus.

Morphology

The holotype measures 1.5 in standard length, in keeping with the generally small size typical of stone loaches. Diagnostic features recorded in the original description include a short pre-anus length (65.4-66.3% of standard length), relatively long paired fins (pectoral fin 20.8-24.2% SL; pelvic fin 17.9-20.6% SL), a comparatively wide body (9.7-11.3% SL at the anal-fin origin), an incomplete lateral line, no orbital lobe, and a broad, distinct dark bar at the base of the tail. The large processus dentiformes in the upper jaw are the species' namesake feature and, per the describer, point to a diet centred on eggs and small food items picked from the substrate.

As with other Schistura and nemacheilids generally, the skin carries only small, deeply embedded scales, leaving the fish effectively naked and, by extension, sensitive to harsh medication — a trait that matters if the species is ever kept. Beyond the measurements above, detailed colour pattern and further morphological description are limited to the original taxonomic paper; this is a data-sparse species and further generalisation beyond the published description would be guesswork.

Habitat

The type locality is the Erganyahe River, a stream in the Jieyanghe River subbasin of the upper Irrawaddy basin, in Yingjiang County, Dehong Prefecture, Yunnan, China. At the time of collection the water measured about 54 °F with a pH of 5.9 — a cool, clear, fast-flowing montane subtropical stream running over rocky substrate. This is classic stone-loach habitat: a high-gradient, well-oxygenated headwater course rather than a still or warm lowland one.

The species is known only from this stream system, and the original description was the product of intensive targeted fieldwork that recovered just four specimens. There is no published evidence of a wider range, and nothing in the available sources suggests the species occurs outside this small corner of the upper Irrawaddy drainage in western Yunnan.

Feeding

Schistura megalodon is inferred to be a micro-predator, sifting the streambed for small invertebrates and other food items. The describer specifically pointed to the enlarged processus dentiformes in the upper jaw as suggestive of a diet including eggs and other small food picked from the substratum, alongside the small aquatic invertebrates that stone loaches typically take.

No aquarium feeding data exist for this species, so any care guidance has to be extrapolated from its Schistura relatives and its cool, fast-flowing habitat: a bottom-foraging micro-predator of this kind would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, along with sinking foods that reach the substrate, and would be unlikely to compete well for food that stays in the water column.

Mating

Nothing has been published on courtship or reproductive behaviour in Schistura megalodon. The original description is a taxonomic paper built around a handful of preserved specimens and does not report field observations of spawning. Stone and brook loaches in general are egg-scatterers without pair-bonding or nest-building, spawning opportunistically in flowing water, but no species-specific detail exists here — this is an honest gap in the record rather than an area to speculate on.

Breeding

As with most Nemacheilidae, Schistura megalodon can be expected to be an egg-scatterer that releases eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry. There is no record of this species being bred in captivity, and given how recently it was described and how rarely it has been collected at all, that is unsurprising rather than notable. Aquaportail's care notes go further and describe captive breeding as impracticable, noting only that males are reported to develop enlarged zones on the head, a possible secondary sexual characteristic rather than a documented spawning behaviour.

The honest summary is that breeding data for this species simply do not exist beyond that one secondhand note, and prospective keepers should not expect to reproduce it at home.

In the aquarium

Schistura megalodon is essentially unavailable in the hobby — sources describe it as very rare, unsurprising for a species only described in 2014 from a single Chinese headwater stream. Where care information exists (from Aquaportail), it points to a coolwater, expert-level fish: a temperature range of roughly 50–64 °F, slightly acidic pH of about 5.5-7.0, and a rating of "complicated" care, reflecting both its cool-flowing-water requirements and its scarcity. A minimum tank of around 15 US gal is suggested, kept as a gregarious group of five or more individuals, since like many small benthic loaches it is thought to do better with company than alone.

Any keeper who did source this species should treat it as a coldwater-to-cool stream fish, not a typical tropical community loach: strong water movement, high dissolved oxygen, a rocky or gravel substrate, and stable, low temperatures matched to its montane origin. As with other scaleless loaches, caution with medications and copper-based treatments is warranted. Given the near-total absence of husbandry data, anyone keeping it would effectively be documenting the species for the first time.

Conservation

Schistura megalodon has not been assessed on the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. This is unsurprising for a species described only in 2014 and known from a single small stream in Yunnan, China, represented by just four collected specimens in the type series and apparently absent from later published records.

A range restricted to one headwater stream in the upper Irrawaddy basin is inherently a conservation concern, even without a formal assessment: such narrow-endemic stone loaches are vulnerable to local habitat disturbance, water-quality changes, or damming, and a single adverse event in that one stream could affect the entire known population. No information is available on population trend, threats, or protective status, and none should be assumed — the fair statement is that this is a data-deficient, narrow-range endemic whose conservation status is simply unknown.
