Schistura mobbsi is one of the strangest fish in this atlas: a stone loach that has abandoned the fast, clear streams typical of its genus for total darkness. It is a troglobitic cave loach known only from Phuong Hoang Cave in northern Vietnam, where it lives its entire life without light. Millions of years cut off from the surface have stripped it of the features a sighted stream fish needs and left it eyeless, unpigmented and equipped instead with enlarged nostrils and other sensory adaptations for finding food by touch and smell alone. It is not in the aquarium trade, has never been formally assessed for conservation status, and almost nothing is known of its size, diet in detail, or reproduction — a reminder that even a well-studied genus like Schistura still holds genuine mysteries.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura mobbsi was described in 2012 by Maurice Kottelat and Steven Leisher, placed from the outset in Schistura, the largest genus of stone loaches and part of the family Nemacheilidae — itself the largest family of true loaches. The holotype is held at the Museum of Natural History in Geneva (MHNG, catalogue number 2732.044).

The species epithet honours Jerry Mobbs, who discovered the cave population that the description is based on. As with many Nemacheilidae described from Southeast Asia in the last few decades, this is a fresh, stable combination — there is no older synonym or prior genus assignment to untangle, unlike many of its Botia- and Noemacheilus-era relatives elsewhere in the family.

Morphology

Schistura mobbsi is strongly troglomorphic — its body plan bears the classic signature of long-term cave adaptation. It has no functional eyes and no pigmentation, so instead of the banded or mottled patterning typical of surface Schistura it appears pale, translucent pink to whitish in life. The lateral line, the sensory canal that most fish use to detect water movement, is reduced or absent, a change presumably offset by other touch- and chemo-sensory structures.

Most distinctively, the nostrils are enlarged and displaced forward on the snout, likely an adaptation for detecting food and navigating by smell and touch in permanent darkness. Fin ray counts are reduced compared to surface relatives, and scales are restricted to the posterior flanks rather than covering the body, leaving much of the fish naked-skinned — a further hallmark of cave life. Maximum size has not been documented in the literature available for this species.

Habitat

The species is known only from Phuong Hoang Cave, a karst cave system connected to the Cau River drainage in northern Vietnam — sources place the cave in the Bac Song/Lang Son area, with some records citing neighbouring Thai Nguyen Province, reflecting the difficulty of precisely mapping cave-stream localities. It lives in the cave's subterranean waters, entirely cut off from surface light.

Cave streams like this are typically cool, clear and low in nutrients, fed by groundwater percolating through limestone, with little to no primary production since there is no light for plants or algae. As a strict cave endemic, Schistura mobbsi has no known surface population, and nothing in the available literature describes its water chemistry or temperature in the detail available for surface-dwelling Schistura species.

Feeding

FishBase classifies Schistura mobbsi at a trophic level consistent with a micro-predator, in keeping with the genus as a whole — surface Schistura are benthic hunters of small invertebrates, insect larvae and crustaceans in fast-flowing water. In a cave with no photosynthesis, the food base is necessarily different: cave ecosystems typically run on detritus washed in from outside, bat guano, and whatever small invertebrates and organic matter enter from the surface or are carried by groundwater.

No specific dietary study of this species has been published in the sources available here, so its exact prey items are not documented. Given its genus and its enlarged, forward-set nostrils, it is reasonable to infer it locates food by smell and touch along the cave floor rather than by sight, but this remains an inference rather than a confirmed fact.

Mating

No description of courtship, spawning behaviour, or sexual dimorphism has been published for Schistura mobbsi. Cave-adapted fish in general tend toward slow growth, delayed maturity and low reproductive output compared to their surface relatives, a trade-off linked to the scarcity of food in subterranean systems, but this is a general pattern in cave biology rather than a documented fact for this particular species.

Breeding

Nothing specific is recorded about reproduction in Schistura mobbsi. Stone and brook loaches (Nemacheilidae) as a family are typically egg-scatterers that release eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no parental care, and there is no reason from its taxonomy to expect this species to differ in the basic mode of reproduction. It is not kept or bred in the aquarium hobby — it has no presence in the trade — so there is no aquarium-spawning record to draw on either, and its breeding biology in the cave remains essentially unstudied.

In the aquarium

Schistura mobbsi is not an aquarium fish. It is not collected or traded, and its extreme specialisation to a single dark cave system — no eyes, no pigment, a food web built on cave detritus rather than a stream's usual invertebrate life — means it would be an exceptionally poor candidate for captivity even if it were available. Any general Schistura care advice (cool, clean, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water) is a guess extrapolated from its surface relatives, not something documented for this species, so none is offered here.

Its value to this atlas is illustrative rather than practical: it shows how far a genus built around fast-water stream specialists can diverge when a population becomes isolated underground, and it is a useful reminder that some Schistura are genuinely data-sparse — known from a single description and a single locality, with basic facts like adult size still unrecorded.

Conservation

Schistura mobbsi has not been formally assessed by the IUCN Red List and is classified here as Not Evaluated. As a species known from a single cave system, it is inherently vulnerable to anything that disrupts that cave's hydrology or water quality — groundwater pollution, quarrying or tourism development around karst caves are the general threats to this kind of habitat in northern Vietnam, though no species-specific conservation study is available to confirm current pressures on Phuong Hoang Cave itself.

Because it is not traded or collected, the aquarium hobby poses no plausible threat to this species. Its long-term security depends entirely on the integrity of one karst cave system, which is the case for many troglobitic fish worldwide — a single-locality endemic with no assessed status and no population monitoring on record.
