Taxonomy & naming
Schistura nubigena was formally described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2017, in a paper covering stone loaches of the Nemacheilidae from northern Myanmar. The holotype, a fish of 1.5 in standard length, was collected on 26 November 2014 from the Mali Hka River in Kachin State and is held at the Muséum d'histoire naturelle in Geneva (MHNG 2766.052).
It belongs to the genus Schistura, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one of the largest genera in the whole order Cypriniformes, with well over 200 described species spread across South and Southeast Asia. Kottelat distinguished S. nubigena from its relatives by a unique combination of features: a distinctive bar pattern along the flank, an incomplete lateral line, two vertical blotches at the base of the caudal fin, and eight-and-a-half branched dorsal rays. The Catalog of Fishes lists it as a valid species in Schistura; no synonyms or subsequent revisions are on record.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. Like other Schistura it has an elongate, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and a small, ventrally placed mouth surrounded by barbels used to feel out food among the stones. The skin is essentially scaleless to the touch, a trait shared across the loach group that leaves these fish more exposed to skin damage and more sensitive to medication than typical scaled aquarium fish.
Colour pattern is diagnostic for the species: juveniles show four dark bars across the body, which fuse and multiply as the fish matures into a pattern of around eight bars interspersed with pale spots and bands, plus the two vertical blotches at the caudal-fin base noted in the original description. As in other nemacheilids, an erectile spine sits in a groove below the eye — a defensive feature of the group, though it is far less prominent than the stout suborbital spine of the larger botiid loaches.
Habitat
Schistura nubigena is known from the Mali Hka River, one of the two headstreams that join to form the Ayeyarwady (Irrawaddy) in Kachin State, northern Myanmar, at an elevation of around 400 metres. The type locality sits at roughly 27°26′N, 97°28′E, in fast, clear riffles running over a bed of gravel and cobble — classic fast-water stone-loach habitat, with strong current and high dissolved oxygen.
No other river system has yet been documented for this species in the available literature, which is consistent with the pattern seen across Schistura: many species are narrow-range endemics restricted to a single river or drainage in the eastern Himalayan foothills and adjacent uplands. Data on seasonal habitat use, depth preference and any migratory movement are not available.
Feeding
As a small benthic stone loach, Schistura nubigena is presumed to feed as its relatives do: picking small aquatic invertebrates — insect larvae, worms, crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — from among the gravel and cobble of its riffle habitat. FishBase places it at a trophic level around 3.0, consistent with a diet of small invertebrates rather than algae or detritus.
No aquarium feeding record exists for this species specifically, but stone loaches of this kind are micro-predators that do best on small live or frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and daphnia, supplemented with sinking pellets; they often ignore dry flake altogether.
Mating
Nothing specific to Schistura nubigena has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour. Stone loaches in the genus Schistura are not known to pair-bond or display parental behaviour; the pattern documented across Nemacheilidae generally is a twisting, swimming display between a male and female in open water, during which eggs and milt are released together and simply drift down into the crevices of the streambed.
Given the species' fast, oxygen-rich riffle habitat, any reproduction is likely tied to the seasonal rise and fall of the Mali Hka and similar Himalayan-foothill rivers, but this has not been documented for S. nubigena and should be treated as inference from the wider genus rather than a confirmed fact.
Breeding
Schistura nubigena has, as far as the record shows, never been bred in the aquarium — unsurprising for a species that has barely entered the trade at all. Stone and brook loaches of this genus are egg-scatterers: ripe adults release eggs over gravel in fast-flowing water with no parental care whatsoever, and captive spawnings across the genus are rare and poorly documented even for far more commonly kept Schistura species.
Data for this species specifically is sparse to the point of being essentially absent beyond the original description. Any keeper attempting to breed it would be working from general Nemacheilidae husbandry principles — cool, fast, highly oxygenated water and a gravel substrate — rather than from any published account of successful reproduction.
In the aquarium
Schistura nubigena is not an established aquarium fish; it has no meaningful trade history and is not something a hobbyist is likely to encounter for sale. Should it ever appear, its small size (under 1.5 in) and its riffle-dwelling ecology point to a specialist stone-loach setup rather than a general community tank: strong current, a coarse gravel-and-cobble substrate, and high dissolved oxygen are non-negotiable, mirroring the fast Himalayan-foothill river it comes from.
As with all nemacheilids, its near-scaleless skin means it would be sensitive to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so any dosing should be conservative. Given how little is documented about its biology, anyone keeping this species should treat husbandry as experimental and lean on general Schistura care experience rather than species-specific guidance, which does not yet exist.
Conservation
Schistura nubigena has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no formal conservation category; we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess. It is known only from its type locality on the Mali Hka River in Kachin State, Myanmar, which — if the species does prove to be a narrow-range endemic, as is common in this genus — would leave it potentially vulnerable to any localised habitat disturbance, though no population data or threat assessment exists to confirm or quantify that risk.
The species has no documented aquarium trade, so collection pressure is not a known factor. Northern Myanmar's rivers face broader regional pressures from mining, damming and land-use change, but no source specific to this species links those pressures to its status. This is a genuinely data-sparse fish, and further field survey would be needed before any meaningful conservation statement could be made.
