Schistura oedipus is a small nemacheilid loach found nowhere on Earth except a handful of subterranean streams beneath the Pang Mapha karst of northwestern Thailand — a true troglobite, evolved for a life lived entirely without light. Its eyes are reduced to vestigial pits buried under skin, and its body carries no pigment, leaving it a pale, translucent 3 in fish that finds its way through flooded caves by touch and chemosense alone. It is protected by Thai law and is not a fish for the aquarium: its entire known range fits inside a single karst formation, and expert consensus is firmly that it should not be collected or kept.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura oedipus was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1988, placed from the outset in Schistura, the largest genus of stone loaches within the family Nemacheilidae. Nemacheilidae itself has been carved out of the old, catch-all "Noemacheilus"/"Nemacheilus" complex over recent decades, with many of its Southeast Asian cave and stream species — this one included — resolving into Schistura as the group was revised; the Catalog of Fishes, the standing authority for valid names, continues to list the species under this combination.

The species epithet oedipus is a direct and rather vivid piece of naming: it references Oedipus, the king of Greek myth who blinded himself, an allusion to the loach's degenerate, non-functional eyes. It is a fitting name for one of the relatively small number of troglobitic (obligate cave-dwelling) fish species known from mainland Southeast Asia.

Morphology

This is a small, elongate stone loach, reported to reach only about 2 in SL (roughly 3 in TL) — modest even by Nemacheilidae standards. Like other members of the family it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches; nemacheilids are unarmed, slender-bodied fish built for holding position in current rather than defense. The skin is essentially scaleless or very finely scaled, a trait shared broadly across the loach lineages and one with real consequences for how the fish tolerates medication.

What sets Schistura oedipus apart is its cave adaptation. The eyes are reduced to vestigial pits sunk beneath the skin, functionally blind, and the body carries no melanin pigment, giving the fish a pale, almost translucent appearance rather than the banded or mottled patterning typical of surface-dwelling Schistura. Some sexual dimorphism has been reported: males may show a thickened second pectoral-fin ray, a feature seen in a number of stone loaches and thought to relate to courtship or substrate contact rather than any obvious visual signal, appropriate for a fish that cannot see its own kind.

Habitat

Schistura oedipus is known only from subterranean streams within the Pang Mapha karst, a limestone cave district in Mae Hong Son Province, northwestern Thailand. It lives in flowing water inside flooded caves and cascades cut through the limestone — a permanently dark, thermally stable environment quite unlike the sunlit streams most Schistura inhabit. Its known extent of occurrence is tiny, well under 2,0 mi², and it has not been recorded outside this single karst formation.

The water itself is cool to mild and well oxygenated, typical of fast subterranean limestone streams, with reported aquarium parameters in the range of about 70–79 °F and pH 6–7.5 at moderate hardness. This is a fish of clear, flowing, mineral-rich cave water, not the warm, still, tannin-stained water associated with many surface tropicals — a distinction worth stressing given how differently cave loaches and blackwater fish are often (wrongly) grouped.

Feeding

In its cave habitat, Schistura oedipus feeds on aquatic microorganisms and organic detritus that collects in the flowing subterranean water — the food web available in a lightless system, built on decomposing organic matter washed in from outside rather than on algae or plant growth, both of which are absent without light.

Where husbandry notes exist, sinking catfish pellets, flake, and frozen foods such as mosquito larvae, brine shrimp and daphnia have been suggested as suitable foods for a bottom-feeding, detritus- and micro-invertebrate-eating loach of this kind. As with the rest of this species' profile, however, detailed dietary data from the wild population is sparse — much of what is known comes from a small number of cave surveys rather than sustained study.

Mating

Almost nothing has been documented about courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura oedipus. The only noted sexual difference is the reported thickening of the second pectoral-fin ray in males, which may play a role in contact during spawning, as it does in some related stone loaches, but no direct observation of pairing or spawning behaviour in this species appears in the available literature. Given how difficult the cave habitat is to observe, this gap is unsurprising rather than unusual for a troglobitic fish.

Breeding

No breeding of Schistura oedipus in captivity has been reported. As a stone loach (Nemacheilidae), the expected mode for the group is an egg-scatterer over gravel and stones in flowing water with no parental care, and there is no reason from its biology to expect this species to differ — but this is an inference from its family rather than a documented observation, and it should be read that way.

In practice the point is close to moot: this is a legally protected, single-cave endemic that responsible sources uniformly advise against collecting or keeping, so captive breeding has essentially never been attempted and is not something the hobby should pursue.

In the aquarium

Schistura oedipus is not a fish for the aquarium hobby, and this profile does not recommend keeping it. Its entire known population lives in one karst cave system in Thailand, it is protected under Thai law, and its IUCN Vulnerable listing exists precisely because a species with this little range and this narrow a habitat cannot absorb collection pressure. Responsible hobby sources are explicit that it should not be acquired.

Where husbandry has nonetheless been discussed, the physiological requirements read like those of many stone loaches: cool-to-mild, clean, well-oxygenated, flowing water, a sand substrate, and abundant hiding places, with the caveat that a blind cave fish has no use for light and likely fares poorly under normal aquarium illumination and photoperiod. As with other scaleless loaches, it would be expected to be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications. None of this is a case for keeping the species; it is offered only for completeness, alongside the clear recommendation to leave this fish in its cave.

Conservation

Schistura oedipus is listed as Vulnerable (D2) by the IUCN Red List, assessed 25 February 2011, on the basis of its extremely restricted range — an extent of occurrence far below 2,0 mi², confined entirely to the subterranean streams of the Pang Mapha karst. The assessment cites tourism development, watershed degradation, and declining water quality in the karst catchment as the principal threats to a species that, by definition, has nowhere else to go.

The species is protected under Thai law, and the honest conservation message here is simple: because its whole world is one cave system, any disturbance to that system — cave tourism infrastructure, pollution, or hydrological change in the surrounding watershed — bears directly and immediately on its survival. It is a clear case where habitat protection at a single, small, specific site is the entire conservation strategy.
