Taxonomy & naming
Schistura orthocauda was described by Hoang Duc Mai in 1978, originally placed in the genus Barbatula before later revision moved it into Schistura, where the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — currently recognizes it. This shuffling is typical of the group: the old, catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been progressively split apart over recent decades, with many of their Southeast and East Asian members redistributed into Schistura, Triplophysa, Barbatula and other genera on the basis of finer anatomical and molecular work.
The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, by far the largest family within the loach superfamily Cobitoidea. Schistura itself is one of the most species-rich fish genera in the world, with well over 200 described members spread across South and Southeast Asia, and new species are still being described from previously unsurveyed streams — a 2018 paper on a newly described relative from central Vietnam's Phong Nha–Ke Bang region notes S. orthocauda among the small suite of Schistura already known from northern Vietnam.
Morphology
As a member of Nemacheilidae, Schistura orthocauda has the classic stone-loach build: a slender, elongated, subcylindrical body, a small ventral-facing mouth ringed with barbels for picking at the streambed, and small eyes set high on the head. Like other Schistura it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a small, sharp spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out, a defensive feature shared across the wider loach group including its much larger botiid cousins.
The species epithet orthocauda, from the Greek orthos (straight) and cauda (tail), points to a straight or unforked tail shape used to distinguish it from other regional Schistura — a subtle diagnostic character rather than a showy field mark. Precise adult size has not been documented for this species; related Schistura in the region typically run from about 1–4 in standard length, and it is reasonable to expect S. orthocauda falls in that range, but no confirmed maximum length has been located for it specifically. Like its relatives, the skin carries small, deeply embedded scales rather than a heavy scale coat, leaving it sensitive to handling and medication.
Habitat
Schistura orthocauda is known from streams in the Tam Dao mountain area of northern Vietnam, where it appears to be a local endemic rather than a widely distributed species — consistent with the pattern across Schistura, in which many species are known from a single river system or even a single collecting locality. FishBase lists it as a tropical, demersal (bottom-dwelling) freshwater fish, and its trophic level of about 3.0 places it as a benthic carnivore feeding on small invertebrates rather than an algae- or detritus-grazer.
The habitat itself has not been described in detail for this species, but the genus as a whole is characteristic of fast-flowing, clear, well-oxygenated hill and mountain streams running over rock, gravel and sand — cooler and swifter water than the sluggish lowland rivers many aquarium fish come from. Given the Tam Dao locality's elevation, a cool-to-warm, well-aerated flowing stream is the best-supported picture of its native water, though specific temperature and chemistry readings from the type locality have not been published.
Feeding
The recorded trophic level of about 3.0 places Schistura orthocauda as a benthic micro-predator, foraging over the stream bottom for small invertebrates such as insect larvae and tiny crustaceans rather than grazing algae or biofilm. This matches the wider pattern in Nemacheilidae, where most species pick through gravel and sediment for aquatic insect larvae, worms and other small prey.
No aquarium feeding data specific to this species has been located. Related, better-documented Schistura in the hobby accept small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and daphnia readily and will often ignore dry flake, and there is no reason to expect S. orthocauda to differ; a keeper working from this genus profile should plan on sinking, meaty foods rather than a flake-based diet.
Mating
No description of courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism has been published for Schistura orthocauda. Stone and brook loaches in general give few external clues to sex outside of breeding condition, when females typically become visibly heavier-bodied with eggs; beyond that, reliable dimorphism data for this species does not exist in the available literature.
Breeding
Breeding has not been documented for Schistura orthocauda specifically, and the species is effectively unknown in the aquarium trade, so there is no hobbyist record to draw on. Based on the well-established pattern across Nemacheilidae, the expected mode is an egg-scatterer: ripe fish release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care of eggs or fry afterward.
Stone and brook loaches of this kind are rarely bred in captivity even where they are kept, because replicating the cool, fast, highly oxygenated flow of a mountain stream — and whatever seasonal cues trigger spawning — is difficult in a standard aquarium. For this species the honest summary is simply that breeding data is sparse to nonexistent; nothing here should be taken as a documented aquarium spawning.
In the aquarium
Schistura orthocauda is not an established aquarium species, and this section is built from the wider Schistura and Nemacheilidae profile rather than direct experience with this fish. Related Schistura kept in the hobby generally do best in cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water with strong flow, a substrate of sand and smooth gravel, and rockwork or driftwood offering shaded retreats — closer to a hillstream setup than a standard tropical community tank. Related species in the genus have been kept around 64–79 °F at pH 6.5–7.5, territorial toward their own kind and appreciative of hiding places, and that is a reasonable starting template in the absence of species-specific data.
As with other Nemacheilidae, the near-scaleless skin means sensitivity to copper-based medications and full-strength treatments generally, so any medicating should be done cautiously and at reduced dose. Because essentially nothing has been published on temperament, group size or long-term care for this exact species, anyone encountering it in the trade should treat it as an experimental, poorly known fish rather than assume the easier care profile of well-established loaches like the clown loach.
Conservation
Schistura orthocauda is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Data Deficient, an assessment recorded in 2010; there is not enough information on its population, range or threats to assign a category of risk. FishBase independently echoes this Data Deficient status and describes the species as poorly documented, with no photographs available even in that database — a good indicator of how little survey effort this fish has received.
As an apparent endemic of a limited stream system in the Tam Dao mountains of northern Vietnam, it sits in the same vulnerable position as many narrow-range Schistura: even modest habitat degradation, sedimentation or water diversion in its home streams could affect it disproportionately simply because it has nowhere else to go. There is no indication the species is targeted by the aquarium trade, and reassessment with updated field data would be needed before its true conservation status could be known with confidence.
