Taxonomy & naming
Schistura paraxena was formally described by Endruweit in 2017 in the journal Zootaxa, based on a holotype and sixteen paratypes collected from the Changdonghe River, an affluent of the West River in the Pearl River drainage near Laibin, Guangxi, China. The holotype (KIZ 2005010297) measures 3 in standard length, with paratypes ranging from 1.5–2.5 in SL.
It belongs to the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest loach family, with hundreds of species spread across Asia and represented by frequent taxonomic revision as older, broader genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus have been split apart. No historical synonym under those older genera is documented for this species; it was described directly under Schistura, and the Catalog of Fishes recognises no other combination for it.
Morphology
This is a small loach, reaching a maximum of about 3 in standard length. The original description notes 8½ branched dorsal rays, 11–12 pectoral rays, 9 pelvic rays and 38 vertebrae, along with a predorsal length of 50–52% SL and a caudal-peduncle depth of 17–18% SL. The most distinctive external feature is a pair of conspicuous crests on the caudal peduncle, brownish-gray against an otherwise beige body — the trait the species is chiefly identified by in the field.
Like other members of Schistura and the wider Nemacheilidae, it is a slender, elongate, near-scaleless loach built for holding position on the substrate in current. Nemacheilids of this kind typically carry a small erectile suborbital spine, a feature of the broader loach suborder Cobitoidea; the original description does not detail this structure for S. paraxena specifically, so it is noted here as a family-level trait rather than a confirmed observation for the species.
Habitat
Schistura paraxena is known only from the Changdonghe River and the nearby Jinxiuhe River, both tributaries of the West River within the Pearl River drainage of Guangxi Province, southern China — an extremely restricted range centred on the type locality at roughly 24°05'N, 110°04'E, Jinxiu County. FishBase records it as a subtropical, demersal freshwater fish.
As with most Schistura, it is a fish of clear, flowing stream water rather than still or standing habitats — the genus overwhelmingly favours cool-to-subtropical, well-oxygenated hill and mountain streams over sand, gravel and stone. No detailed water chemistry has been published for this species specifically, so exact temperature and pH figures given here are inferred from its subtropical stream setting and the wider genus, not measured at the type locality.
Feeding
The original description records gut contents of stonefly (Perlidae) nymphs, confirming this species as a benthic micro-predator of aquatic insect larvae in its native stream. This fits the wider pattern for Schistura and the stone-loach family generally: fish that work the streambed picking off small invertebrates rather than grazing algae or biofilm.
No aquarium feeding data exists for this species, since it is not known to be kept. Based on its documented wild diet and the behaviour of related Schistura, a captive individual would be expected to take small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, brine shrimp and chopped invertebrates readily, and sinking foods generally, while showing little interest in flake left at the surface.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship, spawning behaviour or sexual dimorphism in Schistura paraxena. The original description is a taxonomic paper built from museum specimens and does not address reproductive biology, and no subsequent study appears to have followed up on this narrowly distributed species.
Stone and brook loaches of the genus Schistura are, as a group, egg-scatterers that spawn in flowing water with no parental investment beyond releasing eggs and sperm — but this is a generalisation from the wider family, not an observation of this species. Any dimorphism claim for S. paraxena would be speculation, so none is offered here.
Breeding
There is no record of Schistura paraxena being bred, or even kept, in the aquarium hobby. This is consistent with the great majority of Nemacheilidae: stone and brook loaches typically scatter eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, providing no parental care, and only a small handful of genera in the wider loach group — mostly temperate Cobitidae such as the pond and weather loaches — have been reliably spawned by hobbyists or on farms.
Given the total absence of aquarium history for this species, the honest position is that it is unbred in captivity and its captive reproductive requirements are unknown. Nothing here should be read as a recommendation or expectation that it can be spawned at home.
In the aquarium
Schistura paraxena is not part of the aquarium trade. It has no history of collection for the hobby, no care reports, and no established husbandry — this profile exists for taxonomic completeness rather than as a keeping guide. Anyone encountering this fish would almost certainly be dealing with a museum specimen or a targeted scientific collection, not a shop purchase.
What can be said follows from its biology: as a small stream-dwelling Schistura feeding on insect larvae, it would need cool-to-mild subtropical water with strong flow and high oxygenation, a stony or gravel substrate, and small live or frozen invertebrate foods rather than flake — the general template for stone and brook loaches, not a specific recommendation drawn from any keeper's experience with this species.
Conservation
Schistura paraxena has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so it carries no conservation category here — we record it as Not Evaluated rather than guess. FishBase likewise lists no assessment.
