Taxonomy & naming
Schistura pertica was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, placing it directly in the genus Schistura from the outset — it has never carried an older Nemacheilus or Noemacheilus combination in the literature. The Catalog of Fishes, the authority for valid names, lists it under this original combination, and no synonymy or subsequent revision changes that.
The species belongs to Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, the family that also holds Triplophysa, Barbatula, Oxynoemacheilus and Paracobitis. Schistura is itself the largest genus of freshwater fishes in mainland Southeast Asia, with well over 200 described species, many of them — like this one — narrow-range stream endemics distinguished chiefly by fine details of colour pattern, fin-ray counts and body proportions. The epithet pertica refers to the fish's long, slender, rounded body form.
Morphology
This is a small, elongated loach with a slightly compressed body typical of the genus, reaching around 2.5 in in standard length. Its most distinctive external features are 12 to 18 dark vertical bars crossing the body and a caudal fin marked with its own separate pattern, useful for telling it apart from superficially similar Schistura sharing its streams.
Like other members of the family it carries an erectile suborbital spine — a small, sharp spine hidden in a groove beneath the eye that can be flicked out, a Nemacheilidae-wide trait shared with the unrelated but similarly armed botiids. Its skin is essentially scaleless or covered in tiny embedded scales, a condition typical of the family that has a direct bearing on how sensitive it is to medications and general handling.
Habitat
Schistura pertica is known from the Nam Ou basin of Phongsali Province in northern Laos and adjoining parts of Yunnan, China — its type locality is the Nam Ou at its confluence with the Houay Nam, a few kilometres from Muang Khoa. This places it in fast-flowing, clear hill-stream and tributary habitat typical of the genus: cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water running over stone, gravel and sand substrates in the uplands of northern Indochina.
As with most Schistura, the species is bottom-dwelling and closely tied to current — it is a fish of flowing water, not still ponds or lakes, and its distribution appears to be genuinely narrow, known from a limited stretch of one river system rather than broadly across Southeast Asia.
Feeding
No dedicated dietary study exists for this species, but Schistura as a genus are bold benthic micro-predators, picking small invertebrates — insect larvae, small crustaceans and worms — off stone and gravel in fast water. Related species such as S. balteata, S. pridii and S. spilota show this same feeding style, and there is no reason to expect S. pertica to differ.
In an aquarium setting, genus-typical Schistura take readily to small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm and brine shrimp, along with sinking pellets, and can be slow to recognise flake as food. A varied, meat-leaning diet delivered near the substrate reflects how this fish actually forages in the wild.
Mating
Nothing specific has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura pertica. Genus-typical Nemacheilidae are egg-scatterers rather than pair-forming or territorial spawners, releasing eggs over gravel and stone in flowing water with no nest-building or courtship display beyond the act itself.
Data on external sexual dimorphism in this species is also lacking; it is not described in the original account, and given how data-sparse this fish is generally, no dimorphism claim can be made honestly beyond noting that most Schistura show only subtle differences, such as female girth when gravid, rather than clear colour or fin distinctions.
Breeding
Schistura pertica has not been bred in the aquarium as far as published records show, and it is not established in the ornamental trade at all. Based on genus-typical Nemacheilidae biology, breeding would be expected to follow the stone-and-brook-loach pattern: eggs scattered over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care once eggs are released.
This is honestly a case of extrapolation from the genus rather than direct observation — no spawning account exists for this species specifically. Given how narrowly it is known even taxonomically, captive breeding should be considered essentially unattempted rather than merely difficult.
In the aquarium
Schistura pertica is not a fish encountered in the hobby; there is no established care history, no trade presence, and no hobbyist accounts to draw on. Anything said here about aquarium care is inference from its genus and family, not from keeping this species.
Were it ever available, genus-typical Schistura husbandry would call for cool-to-moderate, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a stone and gravel substrate, strong filtration to replicate stream current, and a diet of small live or frozen invertebrate foods. Its near-scaleless skin, a Nemacheilidae-wide trait, means it would be expected to be sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, warranting the same caution used with other loaches — half-doses and gentle treatment rather than standard fish-medication regimes.
Conservation
Schistura pertica is listed as Data Deficient by the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2011. This reflects how little is known about its population size, trends or the full extent of pressures on it, which is typical for small, range-restricted Schistura species confined to a single river system in Southeast Asia.
Its known range in the Nam Ou basin of northern Laos has been subject to substantial hydropower development and associated land-use change in recent decades, though no study has specifically quantified the effect on this species. There is no evidence of aquarium-trade collection pressure, as the species has no presence in the ornamental trade; any conservation risk here would be habitat-driven rather than trade-driven.
