Taxonomy & naming
Schistura pervagata was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000, part of a single large paper that added 64 new fish species from Laos — a measure of how poorly surveyed the region's streams still were at the turn of the millennium. It sits in the genus Schistura, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and the resting place for many species once split across the older, now largely abandoned genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus.
The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, California Academy of Sciences) is the authority for valid names in this atlas, and it retains Schistura pervagata in its original combination — there has been no subsequent generic reassignment. Nemacheilid taxonomy has been repeatedly reshuffled over the past few decades as genera like Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula were carved out of the old catch-all Nemacheilus, so readers may still see this species, or others like it, cited under older combinations in pre-2000s literature; for this species that issue does not arise since it was described directly into Schistura.
Morphology
Schistura pervagata is a small, elongate stone loach, reaching a maximum standard length of about 3 in — modest even by nemacheilid standards. Like other members of its genus it has the classic Schistura build: a rounded, faintly compressed body, a pointed snout with barbels for probing the substrate, and small eyes set high on the head, all suited to a life spent tucked against current-swept stone and gravel.
As in other true loaches it carries a small, erectile suborbital spine below the eye — a defensive structure typical of the wider Cobitoidea, though far less conspicuous than the bold spine of a botiid. The skin bears the family's characteristically fine, deeply embedded scales, leaving the fish functionally near-scaleless and, as with other loaches, correspondingly sensitive to poor water quality and to full-strength medication. As with many small nemacheilid stream fishes across Southeast Asia, the broader long-term pressures on its habitat are development-driven — damming, deforestation and sedimentation of fast-flowing streams — rather than any pressure from the aquarium trade, which does not appear to deal in this species in any documented volume.
