Taxonomy & naming
Schistura prolixifasciata was described in 2012 by Zheng, Yang & Chen in Ichthyological Exploration of Freshwaters (volume 23, issue 1, pages 63–68), one of many recent additions to the large and still-growing genus Schistura. The type locality lies in the Salween (Thanlwin) River drainage in Yunnan Province, southwestern China, a region that has produced a steady stream of newly described nemacheilid loaches over the past two decades as ichthyologists have surveyed its karst hill streams more thoroughly.
The genus Schistura sits within Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loach family — by far the largest loach family, and one that has absorbed many species formerly placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus as the group has been progressively split. The Catalog of Fishes (Eschmeyer, CAS) is the standing authority for the valid combination Schistura prolixifasciata; no synonymy or revision affecting this species is noted beyond its original description.
Morphology
As a member of Schistura, S. prolixifasciata shares the genus's general build: a small, elongate, nearly cylindrical body suited to holding position against current, a flattened head and underslung mouth for browsing the streambed, and the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the family — a small, sharp spine hidden in a groove below the eye that the fish can flick out defensively. Like other nemacheilids it is essentially scaleless to the touch, with tiny, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin exposed.
No confirmed size or detailed colour-pattern description is available in the sources consulted here; the specific epithet prolixifasciata ("long-banded" or "extended-stripe") points to an elongated stripe or band as a distinguishing mark of the original description, but exact measurements and pattern details are not recorded in the cache and should not be guessed at. Habitat
Schistura prolixifasciata is known only from the Salween (Thanlwin) River basin in Yunnan, China — a drainage that runs through limestone karst terrain typical of much of Yunnan's hill-stream ichthyofauna. Like the great majority of Schistura species, it is a demersal fish of flowing freshwater habitat, almost certainly a clear, fast, well-oxygenated stream running over rock and gravel rather than a still or sluggish backwater.
Exact temperature and water-chemistry data have not been recorded for this species. Given its genus, its Yunnan karst setting, and the general preference of Schistura and related stone loaches for cool-to-moderate, swiftly flowing hill streams, cooler flowing water is a far safer assumption than the warm, still blackwater sometimes wrongly generalized across loaches — but no confirmed figures exist, and this should be treated as an informed inference rather than a documented fact.
Feeding

Based on its genus and trophic level, a diet of small live or frozen foods and sinking invertebrate-based preparations would be the appropriate approach for any specimen in captivity, rather than flake or plant-heavy fare.

Were this fish to be kept, the general Schistura and nemacheilid template would apply: a cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated, flowing setup with a rocky or gravel substrate and good current, mirroring hill-stream conditions rather than a warm, still community tank. As with all nemacheilid and other scaleless loaches, sensitivity to copper and full-strength medications should be assumed, calling for gentle, reduced-dose treatment if disease management is ever needed. Given the total lack of husbandry data, this species should be treated as unsuitable for anyone without direct access to further research or field-collected specimens.
