Taxonomy & naming
Schistura punctifasciata was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1998, part of his extensive work revising the stone loaches of Laos and the wider Mekong basin. It sits in the genus Schistura, by far the largest genus in the family Nemacheilidae and one that has absorbed many species once placed in the old catch-all genera Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus as the group was progressively split apart. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the valid combination, and it stands as Schistura punctifasciata Kottelat, 1998.
Nemacheilidae itself was only recognised as distinct from the spined loaches (Cobitidae) relatively recently in taxonomic terms, and it remains in flux — new Schistura species are still being described from small Southeast Asian streams every few years. This species has not been recombined or synonymised since its description; it is known only from the original type series.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reaching only about 1.5 in in standard length. Encyclopedia of Life records an incomplete lateral line that does not reach the pelvic-fin origin, 8 pelvic rays, 8 (occasionally 9) branched dorsal rays, 10 pectoral rays, and 8+8 branched rays in the caudal fin. The anterior nostril sits at the tip of a short tube, a common nemacheilid feature that helps the fish sense its close surroundings on the streambed.
The pattern is the species' most distinctive trait and the source of its name: 7 to 11 dark vertical bars cross the body, each overlaid with irregular greyish dots — a punctuated banding rather than the clean bars seen in many related Schistura. Like other members of the family it has a small, erectile suborbital spine (a feature of the wider loach group, though a smaller and less prominent structure than the botiids' large spine) and the thin, near-scaleless skin typical of the family, which makes small nemacheilids sensitive to medication and rough handling.
Habitat
Schistura punctifasciata is known only from the Xe Bangfai basin, a tributary system of the Mekong in central Laos. FishBase describes its habitat as clear, standing to relatively fast-flowing water over a gravel substrate, at depths of roughly 27.5–39.5 in — a modest, shallow stream environment rather than a deep river channel.
As with many Schistura, the known range appears to be narrow, and the species has not been reported outside this one drainage. That kind of single-basin endemism is common in the genus: many stone loaches are described from one river system and never subsequently recorded elsewhere, which is as much a reflection of how little these small streams have been surveyed as of true rarity.
Feeding
No dietary study has been published for this species specifically. Stone loaches in Schistura are, as a genus, bottom-dwelling micro-predators: they work the gravel and sediment of clear, flowing water for small invertebrates, insect larvae and other tiny prey, a foraging style consistent with the clear, gravel-bottomed stream habitat recorded for this species.
Given the total absence of published feeding data for Schistura punctifasciata, this account should be read as inference from the genus rather than a confirmed record for the species — a case where saying less is more honest than filling in specifics that were never observed.
Mating
No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for this species. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae typically show little external sexual dimorphism and no elaborate courtship; reproduction across the genus is generally understood as broadcast spawning in fast-flowing water rather than any paired or territorial behaviour.
Nothing beyond this genus-level pattern can be stated for Schistura punctifasciata with confidence — data on its reproductive biology simply has not been collected or published.
Breeding
There is no aquarium breeding record for this species, and stone loaches of this kind are rarely if ever bred in captivity. The genus as a whole is understood to be an egg-scatterer: ripe fish release eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care afterward.
Given the species' single-basin distribution, tiny size and complete absence from the aquarium trade, this account follows the honest default for the genus rather than any specific observation: egg-scattering over gravel with no parental care, and essentially unknown to hobby breeding.
In the aquarium
Schistura punctifasciata is not an established aquarium fish and has no documented history in the hobby or trade; it does not appear on Seriously Fish or in the standard loach reference sites, and this profile should be read as a natural-history record rather than a care guide. Should material ever reach fishkeepers, the safe inference from its habitat and its relatives is a small group of clear, moderately flowing, well-oxygenated water over gravel, kept cool to moderate rather than warm and still.
As with other small, near-scaleless nemacheilids, any specimens in captivity would need careful handling and gentle, reduced-strength medication — thin, mostly naked skin makes this group of loaches quick to absorb treatments and correspondingly quick to show stress or disease. At barely 1.5 in, this is also a fish that would be easily outcompeted or predated by larger tankmates, so any hypothetical care would call for equally small, calm companions.
Conservation
Schistura punctifasciata is listed as Data Deficient (DD) by the IUCN Red List, assessed in 2011. The assessment cites its limited known range — apparently endemic to the Xe Bangfai basin in Laos — and a lack of sufficient information to support a full threat evaluation.
As with much of the Mekong basin's small-stream fauna, the pressures most likely to matter for a narrow-range stream endemic are habitat-based: damming, sedimentation and land-use change across Laos's tributary systems. No population trend or specific threat has been documented for this species, and it is not known to appear in the aquarium trade, so there is no evidence of collection pressure. Data Deficient here reflects genuine scientific uncertainty rather than any confirmed stability or decline.
