Taxonomy & naming
Schistura quaesita was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000. It sits in the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — a group that was carved out of the old, catch-all Noemacheilus/Nemacheilus in a series of revisions through the late twentieth century as ichthyologists split that unwieldy genus along anatomical lines. Kottelat has been the dominant reviser of Southeast Asian Schistura, and quaesita is one of many narrow-range species he named from the region's river systems.
The Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination Schistura quaesita, and no subsequent synonymy or generic transfer is reflected here. As with much of this genus, the species is defined mainly by fine details of colour pattern, fin-ray counts and body proportions that separate it from superficially similar Schistura sharing the same drainage.
Morphology
Schistura quaesita is a small loach, reaching only about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely of small fish. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it has an elongated, sub-cylindrical body, a flattened belly suited to holding position on the streambed, and small, deeply embedded scales that leave the skin functionally naked — a trait shared across true loaches and one that matters for how the fish should be handled and medicated in captivity.
Where the genus is diagnostic, Schistura species typically carry an erectile spine below the eye — the suborbital spine common to loaches — used defensively and easily overlooked by anyone unfamiliar with the group. Beyond the size given by FishBase, detailed morphological description of this species is not available in the sources consulted here; as a narrow-range, rarely studied stream loach, much of its natural history remains undocumented.
Habitat
The species is known only from the Nam Ngum basin in Laos, part of the Mekong drainage, where it appears to be a single-locality endemic — recorded from one site rather than distributed broadly across the basin. It occupies riffles and rapids with moderate to fast current, over a substrate of gravel and stone, the classic microhabitat of stone loaches: places where flow keeps the bottom clean, oxygen levels high, and biofilm and small invertebrates abundant for a benthic forager to work over.
This is a tropical freshwater fish, but a lotic, fast-water one — not a still, warm backwater species. Its narrow known range and dependence on a specific type of flowing, well-oxygenated stream habitat make it inherently vulnerable to any disturbance concentrated at that single site, from damming to sedimentation to changes in flow regime.
Feeding
FishBase places Schistura quaesita at a trophic level around 3.0, consistent with a small invertebrate feeder — the general pattern for Nemacheilidae, which forage over riffle substrates picking off aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates dislodged by the current. No species-specific dietary study is available.
In the aquarium, the safe extrapolation from its wild niche and its genus is to treat it as a micro-predator: offer small live and frozen foods such as bloodworm, daphnia and brine shrimp, along with sinking pellets sized for a small bottom-dweller. Flake aimed at mid-water fish is likely to be ignored by a fish built to work the substrate.
Mating

As with all true loaches, the near-scaleless skin means sensitivity to copper and to full-strength medications — half-dose, careful treatment is the general rule for the family, and it should be assumed to apply here too. That status fits the species profile precisely: a fish known from a single locality in the Nam Ngum basin of Laos, with no population trend, no threat assessment, and only the barest life-history data on record.
A single-locality endemic tied to fast, clean riffle habitat is inherently exposed to any localized pressure — damming, sedimentation from land-use change, or water abstraction anywhere in the Nam Ngum system could affect the entire known population.
