Taxonomy & naming
Schistura robertsi was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 1990, placed from the outset in Schistura — one of the largest genera in the family Nemacheilidae, the stone or brook loaches, and by far the largest of all loach families. The species epithet honours Tyson R. Roberts, the American ichthyologist who collected the type series on the Malay Peninsula.
Nemacheilidae itself has been heavily reshuffled over the past few decades as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; many species now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa and Barbatula once sat under those broader names. The Catalog of Fishes is the current authority for the valid combination, and it lists this fish as Schistura robertsi. A 2020 molecular and morphological study (published via PubMed) went further, showing that S. robertsi as historically recognised is a polyphyletic species complex — populations across its reported range that look alike but represent separate, still largely unnamed lineages. That work is a reminder that the taxonomy of Schistura, a genus with several hundred described species across mainland and insular Southeast Asia, remains unsettled in many corners, and that a single binomial can quietly mask real diversity.
Morphology
Schistura robertsi is a small, slender loach, reported to reach only about 2 in standard length (roughly 2.5–3 in total length) — modest even by the standards of the stone loaches. Like other members of Nemacheilidae it lacks the erectile suborbital spine that defines the botiid loaches; instead it relies on camouflage and a flattened, streamlined body built for holding position against current among stones.
The skin is essentially naked to the eye, covered only in tiny, deeply embedded scales — a trait shared across the family that makes these fish, like their spined relatives, sensitive to medications and prone to picking up parasites quickly in poor water. Detailed pattern and colour data were not captured in the sources used for this profile; as with many small-range Schistura, published descriptions focus more on meristic and morphometric detail than on a vivid field description, and much of the fine-scale variation across its range is exactly what the 2020 species-complex study was probing.
Habitat
This species is native to the western Malay Peninsula, with records spanning from Tanintharyi in southern Myanmar, through Trang province in peninsular Thailand, to Langkawi Island in Malaysia and nearby Phuket Island. It lives in flowing hill streams and rocky creeks with beds of stone, gravel, sand and water-worn boulders — classic habitat for the family, and a world away from the still, soft blackwater favoured by many other Southeast Asian fishes.
Water in these streams runs cool to moderately warm and only mildly acidic to slightly alkaline, and it is typically clear and well-oxygenated thanks to constant flow over rock and gravel. Seriously Fish and Loaches Online both give a working range of roughly 64–86 °F and pH 6.0–8.0, which reflects streams that can warm somewhat in the lowlands but stay well aerated year-round. This is a running-water specialist, not a still-water fish, and reproducing that current and oxygenation is central to keeping it well.
Feeding
Schistura robertsi is best understood as a small benthic micro-predator. In its native streams it forages over rock and gravel for small invertebrates — insect larvae, tiny crustaceans and other stream-bottom fauna — rather than grazing algae or biofilm in the manner of the hillstream loaches.
In the aquarium it is not a fussy eater but does best on foods that suit that natural diet: small live and frozen fare such as Daphnia, brine shrimp (Artemia) and bloodworm offered daily, with sinking pellet or wafer formulations accepted as a supplement. Dried flake tends to be ignored or taken only reluctantly. Because it forages at the bottom and can be shy around bolder tankmates, food should be delivered where it will actually reach the loach rather than being consumed in the water column first.
Mating
Nothing specific to Schistura robertsi has been documented on courtship or spawning behaviour, and Seriously Fish notes explicitly that sexual dimorphism in this species is unknown. As is typical for small-range Nemacheilidae, most of what is known about the group's reproduction comes from a handful of better-studied relatives rather than from this species itself.
Across the stone and brook loaches generally, spawning is understood to be an unfussy affair: ripe fish scatter eggs over gravel or among stones in flowing water with no courtship ritual or pair bond described, and no parental care follows. There is no evidence that Schistura robertsi departs from that pattern, but in the absence of direct observation this should be read as an inference from the wider genus rather than a confirmed account for the species.
Breeding
Both hobbyist references consulted for this profile are explicit and in agreement: Schistura robertsi has not been bred in captivity. Seriously Fish records breeding as unrecorded, and Loaches Online likewise notes it has not been successfully spawned in the aquarium.
What can be said follows the general pattern for stone and brook loaches: an egg-scattering species with no parental care, most likely spawning over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, as is typical of the family. There is no farmed or hormone-induced supply chain reported for this species either — fish in the trade, where available, are presumed wild-collected rather than captive-produced. Anyone keeping this fish should expect to enjoy it as a stream-tank resident, not as a breeding project; the data here is simply too sparse to say more.
In the aquarium
Schistura robertsi is a small, active stream fish and should be kept accordingly. Loaches Online recommends a tank with a base of at least 80×12 in furnished with multiple hiding places — large pebbles and slate mixed with smooth rounded stones — plus a substrate of sand and fine gravel; both sources agree that strong water movement and good oxygenation are essential, not optional, and Loaches Online adds that bright lighting suits it well. Filtration turning over four to five times the tank volume, combined with generous weekly water changes of 30–50%, keeps the water quality this sensitive fish needs, since it responds poorly to accumulated organic pollutants.
Loaches Online also notes it can be territorial, so enough rockwork and decor to break sightlines and separate individual territories helps reduce squabbling, and it is not a good match for slow, delicate tankmates that cannot compete for food or hold their own around a boisterous stream-loach. As with other nemacheilids, the near-scaleless skin means any medication should be dosed cautiously — full-strength treatments and copper-based products carry more risk for a loach than for scaled fish, so err toward gentler options and closer observation when treating illness.
Conservation
Schistura robertsi is assessed as Least Concern on the IUCN Red List (2022 assessment). FishBase notes that its range, while spanning several countries of the western Malay Peninsula, is nonetheless made up of localised hill-stream populations with fairly specific habitat requirements, and it flags tourism development, agricultural expansion, livestock activity and residential/commercial development as threats acting on that habitat even though the species as a whole is not considered at elevated risk.
As with many small-range Schistura, the recent finding that S. robertsi represents a species complex rather than a single uniform population is worth flagging here: conservation assessments made under one binomial can obscure more localised pressures on individual lineages once those are formally split and reassessed. For now the Least Concern status stands, but the habitat pressures identified by FishBase — encroaching development along small hill streams — are exactly the kind of incremental threat that can escalate for narrow-range stream specialists like this one.
