Schistura russa is a small stone loach known only from the Nam Tha basin, a Mekong tributary system in Laos, where it lives on riffles of pebble and stone in moderate to fast flow. It belongs to Nemacheilidae, the largest loach family and the source of most of the small, bold, fast-water "stone" or "brook" loaches in the hobby, and at a maximum length of around 2 in it is one of the smallest fish in this section. Like other Schistura it is essentially unknown in the aquarium trade and in the scientific literature beyond its original description and a FishBase summary — the IUCN lists it as Data Deficient, and that verdict is the honest one: this is a data-sparse, range-restricted stream endemic, not a fish with a developed husbandry record.

Taxonomy & naming

Schistura russa was described by the Swiss ichthyologist Maurice Kottelat in 2000. The species epithet russa derives from the Latin russus, meaning russet or reddish, presumably referring to the fish's coloration. It sits in the genus Schistura, part of the family Nemacheilidae — the stone and brook loaches, by far the largest family in the loach superfamily Cobitoidea, with well over a hundred Schistura species described just since 1990 and roughly 190 in the genus overall.

The taxonomy of Nemacheilidae has been repeatedly reshuffled as older catch-all genera such as Nemacheilus and Noemacheilus were split apart; many species now placed in Schistura, Triplophysa or Barbatula were once lumped together. Schistura russa has kept a stable placement since its 2000 description, and the Catalog of Fishes — the authority for valid names — continues to list it in Schistura.

Morphology

Schistura russa is a small, slender nemacheilid loach, reaching a maximum recorded length of about 2 in standard length. Like other members of the genus it has an elongate, subcylindrical body built for holding position in current, a flattened underside, and the erectile suborbital spine characteristic of the wider loach group, tucked in a groove beneath the eye and used defensively when the fish is handled or threatened.

As with nearly all nemacheilids, the skin is effectively naked — scales are minute and deeply embedded or absent over much of the body — leaving the fish highly sensitive to poor water quality and to medications, a point that matters more than colour pattern for anyone actually keeping this genus. Detailed morphometric and colour-pattern data for S. russa specifically are not available beyond the original description and FishBase summary, so we keep this description brief rather than guess at features that have not been documented.

Habitat

The species is known from the Nam Tha basin, part of the Mekong drainage in northern Laos, with its type locality in the Nam Tha itself. It occupies riffle habitat — shallow stretches of pebble and stone substrate under moderate to fast current, the classic microhabitat of Schistura and its relatives, where oxygen levels stay high and the bottom is kept clear of fine silt by the flow.

This is a cool-to-warm, clear, fast-flowing stream environment, not still or blackwater habitat. As with many range-restricted Schistura, no detailed water chemistry data (temperature range, pH, hardness) have been published for this specific population, so any aquarium parameters offered below are inferred from the genus and habitat type rather than measured for this species.

Feeding

FishBase records a trophic level of 3.0 for Schistura russa, consistent with a micro-predator that takes small invertebrates rather than grazing algae or biofilm. This fits the wider pattern in the genus: Schistura species forage over riffle substrate for aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrates dislodged by the current, picking prey items from among the stones rather than filter-feeding or browsing.

No specific dietary study exists for this species beyond that trophic-level estimate, so feeding habits in the wild are inferred from the genus rather than documented in detail for S. russa itself. In captivity, related Schistura accept small live and frozen foods readily and often ignore dry flake, which is the safest working assumption here as well.

Mating

No courtship or spawning behaviour has been documented for Schistura russa. Across the genus, reproduction is poorly studied outside a handful of better-known species, and general accounts of Schistura in the aquarium literature describe the fish as territorial, secretive and largely nocturnal or crepuscular — traits that make courtship difficult to observe even where breeding has occurred.

External sexual dimorphism has not been described for this species, and without confirmed breeding records there is no reliable way to sex individuals by eye. This is a case where honesty about the gap in knowledge is more useful than invention: the species' reproductive biology is simply unrecorded.

Breeding

Schistura russa has not been bred in captivity, and no spawning has been documented in the wild beyond what can be inferred from its close relatives. Stone and brook loaches in Nemacheilidae are, as a group, egg-scatterers: ripe fish release eggs over gravel or among stones in fast-flowing water, with no parental care given to eggs or fry afterward. General accounts of the genus describe captive breeding as rare and secretive when it does occur, with small eggs deposited in hidden spots or dense vegetation rather than in the open.

There is no cave-guarding or mouthbrooding behaviour in this genus — those strategies belong to unrelated fish groups, not to Nemacheilidae. For Schistura russa specifically, the honest summary is that breeding data simply does not exist; this is a rarely-seen, data-sparse stream endemic rather than an aquarium-breeding subject.

In the aquarium

Schistura russa is not an established aquarium fish — it does not appear on the major hobbyist reference sites (Seriously Fish and Loaches Online have no dedicated profile for it), and any specimens in the trade would almost certainly be wild-collected incidental catches from Laos rather than a stocked, named import. Anyone who does encounter it should treat it as a genus-typical Schistura: a small, active, bottom-dwelling micro-predator that wants cool-to-moderate, clear, fast-flowing, well-oxygenated water over a fine gravel or sand substrate, strong filtration for turnover, and regular water changes to mimic a riffle environment.

Because it is essentially scaleless like other nemacheilids, it should be treated with the same caution given to any loach when it comes to medication — copper-based treatments and full-strength doses of many general remedies are best avoided or halved. Given its tiny 2 in adult size and territorial, active-water habits documented for the genus, a modest but current-rich, well-oxygenated setup with plenty of stone and pebble cover would suit it far better than a still community tank, though this remains inference from genus behaviour rather than a documented care record for the species itself.

Conservation

The IUCN Red List assessed Schistura russa as Data Deficient in 2011, and that status reflects genuine scientific uncertainty rather than confirmed rarity or safety. The species is known only from the Nam Tha basin in Laos, a single river system, which is the kind of narrow range that leaves a stream endemic vulnerable to any localized habitat change even without formal survey data to quantify the risk.

No population trend, threat assessment, or trade data specific to this species has been published. Given the general pressures facing Mekong tributary systems in Laos — damming, sedimentation and agricultural runoff — a precautionary view is warranted, but any statement beyond "Data Deficient" would be speculation not supported by the available sources.
