Taxonomy & naming
Schistura scyphovecteta was described in 2013 by Lokeshwor and Vishwanath in a Zootaxa paper covering two new loaches from the Koladyne (Kaladan) river basin. Specimens were collected from the Kaoao and Tuisi Rivers near the villages of New Serkawr and Khopai in southern Mizoram, with the type locality set in the Kaoao River among large boulders in fast current. The describing authors were affiliated with the Department of Life Sciences at Manipur University.
It belongs to the genus Schistura within Nemacheilidae, the stone and brook loaches — by far the largest family of true loaches, with hundreds of small, similar-looking species spread across Asia. The Catalog of Fishes is the standing authority for the valid combination, and it is retained here as Schistura scyphovecteta; there is no indication in the available literature of a subsequent generic reassignment.
The species epithet is built from Latin scyphus (a goblet or cup) and vectis (a bar, plural vectes), describing the six dark brown, goblet-shaped saddles that sit astride the back and run down into bars on the flanks — a piece of purely descriptive Latin naming, typical of the genus.
Morphology
Schistura scyphovecteta is a small loach, reaching only about 1.5 in standard length in males and unsexed individuals and around 1.5 in SL in females — among the smaller members of a genus that rarely produces large fish. The original description distinguishes it from close relatives by six dark brown, globular-shaped saddles crossing the back and continuing as bars over a brown lateral-line stripe, a complete lateral line running the length of the body, two black spots at the base of the dorsal fin, an incomplete black bar at the base of the caudal fin, and a lower jaw without a median notch. Males carry a suborbital flap, a feature used to help separate the sexes in this genus.
As in other Nemacheilidae, the skin is essentially scaleless or carries only tiny, deeply embedded scales, and — where present in the genus — an erectile suborbital spine sits in a groove beneath the eye. This near-naked skin is a defining trait of the family and matters for husbandry: these fish absorb dissolved substances, including medications, far more readily than scaled species.
Habitat
The species is known from tropical streams in southern Mizoram, in the Koladyne (Kaladan) river drainage, which flows from north-eastern India into Myanmar's Chin Hills before reaching the Bay of Bengal. FishBase records it from the Kaoao and Tuisi Rivers, with the type locality among large boulders in fast-flowing water in the Kaoao River near New Serkawr village. This is classic stone-loach habitat: a small, swift, well-oxygenated hill stream running over and around boulders and rock, rather than a slow lowland river.
Beyond these two collection points the range is not well documented, and no broader habitat survey appears in the available sources. This is one of many Nemacheilidae known essentially from its type material and a single additional locality — a fish tied tightly to a specific stretch of fast Himalayan-foothill stream water rather than a documented wide range.
Feeding
No diet study specific to Schistura scyphovecteta has been located, but the genus is well characterised: Schistura species are bold, benthic micro-predators that forage over stream bottoms for small invertebrates — aquatic insect larvae, small crustaceans and other invertebrate prey — picked from among boulders, gravel and rock in fast current.
In the aquarium, congeneric stone loaches take small live and frozen foods readily — Daphnia, Artemia and bloodworm are typical — and often ignore dry flake. There is no aquarium record for this species specifically, but the same feeding approach used for its relatives would be the reasonable starting point, given the shared body plan and habitat.
Mating
Nothing has been published on courtship or spawning behaviour in Schistura scyphovecteta, and the species does not appear to have entered the aquarium trade in any documented way. Sexual dimorphism is limited to the suborbital flap noted in males in the original description; no other external difference between the sexes has been recorded.
As in most Nemacheilidae, reproduction almost certainly follows the family pattern of broadcast spawning in flowing water rather than any form of pairing, courtship display or nest-building, but this has not been directly observed or reported for the species.
Breeding
There is no breeding record for Schistura scyphovecteta in captivity or in the wild. Stone and brook loaches as a group are egg-scatterers, releasing eggs over gravel and among stones in fast-flowing water with no parental care afterward, and they are rarely bred in home aquaria — most Schistura species are simply never encountered by hobbyist breeders, and this one, known from a handful of streams in Mizoram and not established in the trade, is no exception.
Given the complete absence of husbandry or reproductive data, the honest statement is that breeding biology in this species is undocumented; what follows here is the general pattern for the genus, not anything confirmed for scyphovecteta itself.
In the aquarium
Schistura scyphovecteta is not established in the aquarium hobby, and no husbandry account for the species specifically has been found. Were it to be kept, the requirements would follow those of its close relatives in Schistura: cool, clear, fast, heavily oxygenated water, with turnover on the order of four to five times tank volume per hour, a temperature in roughly the 72–79 °F range, and a pH around neutral (6.5–7.5). A substrate of smooth gravel and rounded stone, with strong water movement across it, mimics the boulder-strewn streams the genus lives in.
The near-scaleless skin typical of the family means real caution is needed with medications and with copper in particular — a half-dose approach and gentle products are standard practice for stone loaches, and pristine water with frequent partial changes matters more for this group than for most community fish. Given the total lack of trade or captive-care history for this exact species, anyone attempting to keep it would be working from genus-level inference rather than tested experience.
Conservation
Schistura scyphovecteta has not been evaluated by the IUCN Red List, so no conservation category applies; it is recorded here as Not Evaluated rather than assigned a guessed status. Its known range is narrow — two rivers in the Koladyne basin of southern Mizoram — which is typical of the genus, where many species are stream endemics known from only one or a few localities.
No population trend, threat assessment or trade data exists for this species in the sources reviewed. Its narrow known distribution and total absence from the aquarium trade mean any conservation judgement beyond Not Evaluated would be speculation; a formal IUCN assessment would require dedicated fieldwork in its home streams.
