Taxonomy & naming
Schistura semiarmata was described by the Scottish surgeon-naturalist Francis Day in 1867, part of his extensive work cataloguing the fishes of British India. It was originally placed in the old catch-all genus Nemacheilus — for much of the twentieth century the default home for almost any small Asian stream loach — and appears in older literature and some database records as Nemacheilus semiarmata.
The genus Nemacheilus was heavily split in the late twentieth and early twenty-first centuries as ichthyologists worked through the diversity of the family, and this species was subsequently moved to Schistura, the largest genus in the stone-loach family Nemacheilidae. The Catalog of Fishes is the authority for the currently valid combination, Schistura semiarmata, and that is the name used here; the Nemacheilus placement is historical rather than current.
Morphology
This is a small, slender stone loach, reported to reach only about 2 in in standard length — modest even by the standards of a genus built almost entirely of small fish. Like other Schistura it has a near-scaleless, elongate body suited to holding position against current, and as a nemacheilid it carries the family's characteristic array of barbels around the mouth for feeling out food on the streambed.
Detailed morphological description of this particular species is sparse in the readily available literature, which is common for narrow-range Schistura known mostly from museum and survey specimens rather than dedicated taxonomic monographs. What is documented is its habitat association: a bottom-dweller of hard substrates — sand, gravel and cobblestone — in flowing hill-stream water, the classic stone-loach body plan and lifestyle.
Habitat
Schistura semiarmata is native to Peninsular India, recorded from the states of Karnataka, Kerala and Tamil Nadu, including the Bhavani River, the Seegoor River and Billicul Lake in the Western Ghats and Nilgiri hill region, with additional records from Pakistan. It occupies high-altitude hill streams with hard bottoms of sand, gravel and cobblestone, and tolerates the slower-flowing riffle sections of these streams as a bottom-dwelling fish.
The water it lives in is clear, well-oxygenated and fast-flowing — the defining condition for stone and brook loaches across the family — and the fish is intolerant of organic pollution. This is a cool-to-moderate hill-stream environment rather than a warm lowland one, and any aquarium approximation needs to prioritise oxygenation and current over warmth.
Feeding
In the wild, Schistura semiarmata feeds on detritus picked from the streambed, consistent with the general nemacheilid pattern of foraging over sand, gravel and stone for organic material and small invertebrates that collect there. As with most small stone loaches, it is best thought of as an opportunistic bottom forager rather than a specialised predator or grazer.
In the aquarium, a fish with this feeding style is generally best served by sinking foods — small pellets, wafers and frozen or live foods offered at the substrate — since it is not built to compete for food in the water column. Given how little is documented about this species specifically, keepers should extrapolate cautiously from its close relatives rather than assume any one diet is confirmed.
Mating
No sexual dimorphism or courtship behaviour has been documented for this species in the sources available, and detailed reproductive biology is essentially unrecorded — typical for a narrow-range hill-stream Schistura that has drawn little dedicated study. What is known is seasonal: spawning has been recorded occurring in backwater pools following the monsoon rains, which fits the broader nemacheilid pattern of breeding activity keyed to seasonal flow and rainfall changes rather than being a constant, year-round event.
Breeding
As with the great majority of stone and brook loaches, Schistura semiarmata is an egg-scatterer with no parental care, releasing eggs over gravel and stone in flowing water rather than guarding a nest or brooding young. It is not a species kept or bred in the home aquarium hobby in any documented way, and the available sources say nothing about captive spawning.
The honest picture here is one of a data-sparse species: what little is recorded points to monsoon-triggered spawning in backwater pools in the wild, and beyond that there is no aquarium breeding record to draw on. Keepers should not expect to breed this fish, and any claim of aquarium spawning for it should be treated with real scepticism absent a documented source.
In the aquarium
Schistura semiarmata is a small (around 2 in) hill-stream loach that, if kept at all, needs its native conditions replicated closely: clear, cool-to-moderate, well-oxygenated water with strong flow, and an intolerance of organic pollution that argues for meticulous filtration and regular water changes — the source data specifies weekly changes of 30–50% and filtration turning over the tank volume four to five times an hour. A hard substrate of sand, gravel and smooth cobble mimics the streambed it forages over.
Like other nemacheilids it is essentially scaleless-skinned and should be assumed sensitive to copper and full-strength medications, a standing caution across the loach family even where a specific study on this species is lacking. This is a specialist's fish rather than a general community species: it wants current, oxygen and cleanliness far more than warmth or décor, and it is not documented as a hardy generalist that tolerates a stagnant tank.
Conservation
Schistura semiarmata is assessed by the IUCN Red List as Least Concern. It is described as a common species within its range in the Western Ghats and Nilgiri hill streams, with a distribution that extends across several Indian states as well as records from Pakistan, which supports a Least Concern designation for a fish that is not narrowly restricted to a single threatened stream system.
As with much of the hill-stream fauna of the Western Ghats — a globally recognised biodiversity hotspot — the broader long-term pressures on this species are likely to be habitat-driven: water pollution, damming and diversion of hill streams, and catchment degradation, rather than any documented pressure from the aquarium trade, which does not appear to draw on this species in any notable way.
